I'm not an economist, [and not being in the US, I don't know anything about kc, the sunshine band and Jeffrey Soffer], so sorry if this sounds a naive question, but isn't there such a thing as market prices?

A concert by Prince at the O2 Arena in London costs 31.21 pounds, a performance by Prince at a private party costs $2 million [for ex.], a private concert by a little known artist costs between $xx and $xx, and a concert by a world famous one costs 10-20 times more. Does that make any sense?
And there is such a thing as the 'elite market'. Here in Moscow there is the annual Millionaires' Fair showcasing luxury goods and services in various sectors and which is open to the public. I could walk around there for hours whining about how unfair and disgusting it all is. But then, there is a market for it.

No matter how cold and calculating it sounds, music is a business, therefore its participants play by the economic rules of that business. And no matter how romantic or spiritual some of Prince's ballads and thoughtful lyrics are, he too has to play by those rules. And I don't think it would make any sense, economic as well as image-wise, for him to cheapen himself by not aksing for fees in the top range - when he is charging someone in the elite market.

As for the moral aspect of participating in the economy of his business sphere in the most profitable way he can, that I think is a question of a personal order: something that's between himself and his conscience.

Well said....very well said. We need to take our emotions out of it and understand that at the end of the day it is a business. Prince never does anything without an underlying reason to do it. It makes business and economic sense. Prince is impulsive, he's a Gemini. You know, Prince being the incredibly gifted artist that he is, is on a totally different level, not saying he's greater or better than us. Prince is going to do what Prince wants to do and Prince is going to be just fine. He does everything for a reason whether it makes sense to us or not. Prince is going to be Prince. xmas

THANK YOU!!!!! It's not rocket science, it's business.

Well since the consensus seems to be that Prince musically whoring himself really is not that big a deal...how about we all skip Christmas this year and pool our monies together and get him to perform for US in some obscure ass location on New Year's Eve.

How about an IHOP?

Oh wait...how about a strip club? Yeah, I thought about the principles of that but what the hell...as long as he's getting paid...nothing else should matter...right?

Ooooh...a bowling alley?

Oh snap...isn't that Mall of America in Minnesota? If it is...that'd be perfect...I've always wanted to see that place!

Come on now...don't be shy! This is the opportunity of a lifetime...Prince is doing anything as long as big money is involved...if enough of us get together on this...we could have him dancing to our tune in no time! So who's in?

You do realize don't you that the only ones bitching and crying are the ones that are trying to convince us or maybe just themselves that nothing's wrong, right?

My understanding is that he did not play at JFK Jr's wedding, but that John John had Forever in My Life played for his and Carolyn's first dance. I don't think Prince was there. From the Oprah interview:

"OPRAH: Do you remember your first song?

    prince: Yeah.

OPRAH: You do? ( plays the theme from "Batman")

OPRAH: The music comes to your head and then you come here, or sometimes you're here and then the music just comes out.

prince: Mm-hmm. ( sings a song ["Forever In My Life"])

    prince: It's -- JFK...

OPRAH: Played this at his wedding.

    prince: Right.

OPRAH: That was his first dance.

    prince: Phew. Yeah."

http://princetext.tripod....oprah.html (about 2/3 down)

I don't necessarily have an issue with Prince whoring himself out to the highest bidder, my question is how does someone who does not celebrate birthdays because his religion tells him not to reconcile playing at someone else's birthday party?

Playing at wedding would not make me ask the same question--unless JW's don't celebrate those either. But at the the time JFK Jr. was married, I don't even know if Prince was a Witness--and like I said, I don't think Prince played in person anyway so moot point (for me).

eek You ARE kidding right? The show was incredible after that - the whole thing, The Beautiful Ones? The screaming?!! If I was your Girlfriend, Black Sweat, Sign O the Times, When Doves Cry, Sometimes it Snows in April, Controversy, Nothing Compares to U, and on and on and on..... Are you MAD? I was in Row B, section 110, practically on the stage - and don't even get me started on the aftershow lol
[Edited 12/18/07 15:41pm]

Oh yeah and the Planet Earth special bit of the aftershow and When You Were Mine. I think that guy was somewhere else on the 6th! Def not in the main arena for the great Beautiful Ones!

Shawn Mullins "Twin Rocks Oregon" Lyrics

I met him on the cliffs
of twin rocks oregon
he was sittin on his bedroll
lookin just like richard brautigan
I thought he was an old man
he wasn't but 37
he said he'd been ridin trains
for 15 years
drawin portraits
to keep his belly full of beer
and it looked to me like he'd died
and missed the plane to heaven

but he was a nice ol' guy
for a younger man
he had a bottle of mad dog
he held in his hand
that he waved around a lot
to make his point
and I listened as he told his tales
of wine and women and county jails
and we finished off that bottle
and smoked a half a joint

he said "I came here to watch the sun
disappear into the ocean
it's been years
since I smelled this salty sea"

he turned his bottle up and down
and I saw him lost
and I saw him found
he said "I don't know
what i've been lookin for, maybe me..."

Well, I told him I too had been
travelin around livin out of my van
from town to town playin for tips
and whatever records I could move...

WTF! eek eek

Hahaha, since when are we to decide (read intervene) what he may and may not do. It sounds so silly to me and also respectless. Oh Prince you've let me down big time with doing these private parties. Did you ask me for permission? No you didn't naughty boy!

Maybe Imago is right with this one: Prince hates his fans and we love him for that. He sure does when roaming about on the internet.

Didn't Prince also play for a lot of money at a party a while ago at the South of France at some Russian big guy's birthday party? Some orger from Nice wanted to get in with the help of, what's his name, Mr. Hayes and it didn't quite work the way he wanted.
I can't remember people making such a big fuss about it then like now.
People always want to do things without anyone minding their business but when it comes to others, even persons we don't know, they want to butt in. Crayzeeee.

Well duh! I never said I wouldn't have gone. Hell, if I had a few million to throw around I'd have his ass perform at my party in February! The fact that he'd probably do it, is what bothers me!

So it's ok to partake in the event on your end-either by paying to see him at an exclusive party or simply attend an exclusive party...but he's the one who should be ashamed?

i don't understand why everyone's going into such a lather as to whether it was "right" or "wrong" for prince to play this gig. he didn't hurt anyone, we're all existentially free to do whatever we want, there's no "wrong" to it.

now, if we wanna talk about TACKY, that's another thread. lol

I watched Prince in a small run down theater in Chicago.

OK, so I have never posted here before, but I just had to ask why this is such a big deal? For those of you saying it is sad that he has sunk to this level...playing in an airplane hanger for uber rich pseudo fans, and that he never would have stooped to this 4 years ago. Have you already forgotten that he sold out 21 shows at the O2? You are trying to convince us that his star has faded?

Was it a sellout to play the superbowl halftime show this spring? Was it just plain sad that he opened up Paisley Park and asked people to "donate" money to L4OA charity every weekend for a whole summer? Was it strange that he reduced himself to a "sideman" playing small theaters with Tamar? Was it dissapointing that he played for a small group of fans at a small Macy's theater in minneapolis prior to his Target Center and 1st Ave gigs? Was it "whoring" himself when he set up shop in Vegas?

Let's see if we can figure out some reasons that Prince might play the Turnberry Party...
1)He knows the guy
2)He wanted to make connections with some of the powerful people that were going to be there.
3)He wanted to showcase a performance/his band to industry folks
4)Lots and Lots of money
5)100 other reasons that we might not think about.

Anyway, I'm going to go throw in a little Around The World In A Day and relax. I'm hoping someone on the Org can figure out what is really going on with Prince. Evidently this is the beginning of the end...but I'm not too worried.

Correction: if you have no problem attending an exclusive event like this, why would it "bother" you that Prince would perform at the same event?

he's coming up to 50 - most people of this age really do not give a ..... what anyone else thinks about what they do - the main reason to do anything from 50 onwards is for enjoyment and money if you need it. End of story

I agree that, being the innovator that he is, Prince has been making his own professional rules as much as he can for much of his career and in various spheres [new distribution models, daring marketing moves, etc.], so yes, he has often given the world the impression that he doesn't have to play by the accepted standards, and most of the time he has done so successfully. But I believe he still has to function within the basic economic structure that regulates this Planet Earth.
So: there is demand for top-charging rock stars to play at private parties, and he is just answering that demand, regardless of how that looks like on a moral/spiritual level.

SexyBeautifulOne said:

That's the problem!!! For 2 and a half decades...Prince has never HAD TO play by those rules!!! It doesn't seem rather strange to you that NOW...at the highest point of his career excluding the Purple Rain era...that he's suddenly so accommodating at playing by somebody else's rules?
