SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR HITS BACK!

taken from today's (12/8) Sunday Mail newspaper:

"SOPHIE IN A ROYAL ROW AFTER CLAIMING PRINCE IS A LITTLE HIT AND MISS

Sophie Ellis-Bextor yesterday hit back after being attacked by outraged Prince fans. The singer was slated on websites devoted to the purple legend after slating one of his London gigs last week, saying he should have played more hits. But fans said Prince had palyed hits such as Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret, Alphabet Street, Cream, U Got the Look, I feel 4 U and Controversy.
Last night Sophie, 28, still insisted: 'The sum of it is I was disappointed. When I go to a show I want songs I know. He just did bits of songs and a couple of hits then all the other jamming stuff'. And Sophie reckons she will still play her early hits for years to come."

There was a bit more, but thats the jist of it.
Sounds like a real man to me...mind if I turn on the radio?

Sophie Who?..

I work in a record store, and yeah I seel her stuff, but on a par to Prince and other recognised artists...I really would give a hoots what such a fool would say, prince has been his funkiest and played his best these dates in London than I can remember... So Ms Bextor. If you want music you know ...buy a chart compilation cd if you want that tripe,

We, who know Princes funky tunes will get down and enjoy them without such trivial reviews and ridiculous gripes

SOPHIE WHO?
Pardon me for living', but this is my world too!

I think I'm in a good position to provide an opinion on the O2 shows from the perspective of a "casual" fan. Have i enjoyed the shows? Yes. The two I've seen have been brilliant. I'm actually scheduled to go to 2 more. Do I know all the tunes? No but then for me that doesn't matter. What is important is the atmosphere. As far as I'm concerned the atmoshphere has been great.
Now if, by the end of it all, a casual fan can be tempted to go to at least 4 shows doesn't that indicate more about the them then one review from Sophie Ellis Bextor?

I read a review today that said anybody who went to Fri 3rd gig would have left confused and I have to agree...some good songs but not very many hits if thats what you went for.

No little red corvette, no When Doves Cry, No Nothing Compares 2 U, no Raspberry beret...etc etc

What we did get was Kiss, Cream, U Got the look, and sections of I feel 4 U and Controversy...and thats your lot

Last night Sophie, 28, still insisted: 'The sum of it is I was disappointed. When I go to a show I want songs I know.
She might have known more songs if she'd bought some recent albums. Sounds like a typical casual fan who thinks his last album was Diamonds & Pearls.
RIP sad

IMHO, Sophie Ellis-Bextor is a SELL OUT! Once in an indie band and now doing 'dance' LOL

I really think that she'll have no choice but to play her early hit(s) as I don't see her giving too much trouble to the charts of late. But I can't honestly see her selling out her local village hall for an afternoon tea dance let alone a 20,000 seater arena for 21 nights in 20 years time. Come to think of it she'd be hard pushed to fill a phone box NOW!

surely she's only got enough songs to do a one hour show (maximum) in the back room of a pub! let alone 21 nights in an arena.

playing your hits is easy if you only have a few albums as you could probably play 90% of your catalog in one night. Prince on the other hand has selected just 150 songs (supposedly) of his vast catalog, and if you're going to play 21 nights, and only stick to just the hits, you'll end up playing the same 2 hour set for 21 nights. I'm not saying his setlist is perfect, but you can't apply the set list logic of a 3 album band to a 30 year veteran of 40 albums.

Think, Sophie. Think!

STUUUUUPID BITCH! Sorry, but I can't STAND Sophie Alien-Bexter! What the hell does she know and why the hell does she think herself qualified to comment on a universal superstar when most people in her own country doesn't know who the hell she is!

Sounds like bitterness and jealousy to me - I'm sorry Sophie, exactly how many hits do you have again?!

BINT.
I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

In defence of Bextor - one show is enough to judge him on. Many people will only see him once - and I don't mean 1 outta 21, I mean once ever. They know Raspberry Beret, Purple Rain, Kiss, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, etc, and they hope to see a great show. They've paid their money. If he suddenly bursts into Diamonds & Pearls only to finish it after 30 seconds when he plays mostly unknown medicore stuff like Lolita in full, then that audience member has every right to be critical of how the show fared compared to their expectations.

The purpose of a review is to inform people of the reviewer's experience with the work in question, whether or not they would recommend it and how they think it could be improved. Sadly this last point is all too easy to answer for many of us. He could improve it right off the bat by stopping all the purple medleys. It's been a stain on his live career for well over a decade.

Then again, her comparison to her own career is beyond ridiculous.

Wouldn't it be fun if P heard about this and invited her along to perform and then did his piss take dancing behind her. Then invite loads of FAMs, not fans, along to join in the funky movement too.

Sorry she is a white girl who tries to sing dance music, only one I can really remember is Bring it back

Sorry was their last Tuesday and will be there again tomorrow, different view/experience for what maybe the third and last show, but going to the aftershow this time, so praying for a performance.

If she was in Big Brother, she would have been one of the Plastics (sorry to the non Brits who don't know what I mean), may look good, but Clarins is a wonderful thing so I hear.

Just looked at her website and she's in FALMOUTH tonight, but she's free on Friday 17th so maybe you guys could be in for a real treat and they'll duet on "Murder on the Dancefloor". And when she does perform she will sing nothing but her hits, could be in for a really long show then if they do the 12" versions and remixes.

Even better, she's got a new song out today in the UK, rush out and buy it in your record stores, take note you'll have to pay cash money too!!

I think it's impossible to have a setlist which isn't critisised by some people, if you've released more than two albums... razz

If you play the new songs, you're offending the people who want the classic hits only. If you play the classic hits, you're offending the fans who have supported you for decades. If you play the old album tracks, you're offending those who only have your latest albums.

The best thing you can do is to play good songs in an entertaining way, and make people enjoy the night whether they know the songs or not. I'm not ashamed to say that I probably won't recognise any of the post 1992 songs before the chorus, but I'm not going to let that stop me from enjoying the performance. biggrin

I think her review was shit, but at the same time, I can see her point about the hits.

I'm sick of saying this, but I LOVED BOTH SHOWS I've seen so far. My wife came with me to the second one and she's not a Prince fan as such, but loves the songs she knows like Kiss, Purple Rain etc.

She left the gig thinking he should have played more of Diamonds and Pearls, more of Raspberry Beret etc....and I suppose for her, the sections between songs she recognised must have been pretty torturous.

For me though....it was fookin awesome from start to finish.

Fact is, not everyone is a hardcore Prince fan and not everyone knows how he goes about live shows. If I went to a MJ gig and he didn't do Billie Jean, I'd write a letter to my MP.

Each to their own cool
