Fact is, not everyone is a hardcore Prince fan and not everyone knows how he goes about live shows. If I went to a MJ gig and he didn't do Billie Jean, I'd write a letter to my MP.

Each to their own cool

Haha, exactly - as a hardcore Jacko fan who's totally sick of that, I'd just groan through that song while it would probably be the highlight of the evening for everyone else. SEB is a massive MJ fan and she's probably bitter that Prince is on a high... just a guess

"SOPHIE IN A ROYAL ROW AFTER CLAIMING PRINCE IS A LITTLE HIT AND MISS

Sophie Ellis-Bextor yesterday hit back after being attacked by outraged Prince fans. The singer was slated on websites devoted to the purple legend after slating one of his London gigs last week, saying he should have played more hits. But fans said Prince had palyed hits such as Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret, Alphabet Street, Cream, U Got the Look, I feel 4 U and Controversy.
Last night Sophie, 28, still insisted: 'The sum of it is I was disappointed. When I go to a show I want songs I know. He just did bits of songs and a couple of hits then all the other jamming stuff'. And Sophie reckons she will still play her early hits for years to come."

There was a bit more, but thats the jist of it.

This woman is an idiot. Prince played a lot of his "hit" songs. You can see the problem with Sophie right there. She wants to hear songs that she knows (ie... Purple Rain... which isn't even really early in his career), rather than get the full Prince experience. A true artist or music fan would be happy to hear new music, and experience new things, but Sophie isn't a real fan of Prince, she has no musical depth in her taste, and she is not a real artist. I wasn't aware that she had any hits at all, so how will she be able to play her early hits for years to come if #1 she has no hits and #2 her career was over before it started?

I read a review today that said anybody who went to Fri 3rd gig would have left confused and I have to agree...some good songs but not very many hits if thats what you went for.

No little red corvette, no When Doves Cry, No Nothing Compares 2 U, no Raspberry beret...etc etc

What we did get was Kiss, Cream, U Got the look, and sections of I feel 4 U and Controversy...and thats your lot

I went to that gig. Was I confused? Absolutelty not.

What was the setlist for that show? But what I still don't get is how anyone can be disappointed if they don't hear "the hits?" To me, the people who want to hear the main hits and nothing but the hits shouldn't even buy a Prince album or buy a ticket to his show anyway. These people have such narrow taste, such feeble minds, and no appreciation for varied music that I can't take them seriously at all. I just can't. If Sophie was a real artist, who truly appreciated "music" and just not "hits," she'd have a different attitude. She really comes across as a complete twit. Look.. you're a causal fan? Cool. But why would you not like "jamming?" Does each song have to be played the same way it is on record? Don't make me laugh.

In defence of Bextor - one show is enough to judge him on. Many people will only see him once - and I don't mean 1 outta 21, I mean once ever. They know Raspberry Beret, Purple Rain, Kiss, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, etc, and they hope to see a great show. They've paid their money. If he suddenly bursts into Diamonds & Pearls only to finish it after 30 seconds when he plays mostly unknown medicore stuff like Lolita in full, then that audience member has every right to be critical of how the show fared compared to their expectations.

The purpose of a review is to inform people of the reviewer's experience with the work in question, whether or not they would recommend it and how they think it could be improved. Sadly this last point is all too easy to answer for many of us. He could improve it right off the bat by stopping all the purple medleys. It's been a stain on his live career for well over a decade.

Then again, her comparison to her own career is beyond ridiculous.

Lolita isn't so obscure. It's the 2nd song on 3121, his album before Planet Earth, that went #1 in the USA. Suddenly a song on a recent, hit album is obscure and can't be played during a 2-2.5 hour concert. Christ! I feel for Prince, always trying to grow as an artist or performer, but casual, narrow-minded fans only have ears for what they already like. That's sad. No wonder TGE Tour got such bad reviews, it was all new music, and all great music.

Perhaps if she's so keen to hear the hits she should stay at home and put on her CDs!

Why would anyone want exact note perfect versions of the songs? She comes across as closed-minded. Shame!

I for one can't wait to see the next show, which is tonight!!

who are you to call someone feebel minded? your head is almost as far up your own arse as Prince's. The tour was advertised as a 'the last time to hear his greatest hits' and the set-lists so far have been nothing like a greatest hits set!!

spare me the pompus nonsense about Prince using his artistic license, 25 minute piano jams and playin obscure songs to massage his own ego certainly isnt playing his greatest hits!! no SOTD?? come on!!!! sad save that for the 'hardcore' fans at the Indigo CLub, if the purple one can be bothered to show up that is!

playing snippets of his songs is a complete can, no need for it at all!! and i defy anyone to tell me that they would rather hear tunes lilke 'Lolita' and 'Black Sweat' as opposed to Alphabet Street, Diamonds And Pearls, and TMBGITW (his only UK number 1!) ! im sure some of you Prince devotees will shoot me down for daring to not worship Princes every move, but he really needs someone to have a quiet word in his ear and remember that he is there to please his fans, and not the other way about!!!!

It's a painfully mediocre song on a way below average Prince album which has been played in full, whilst many of his biggest hits have been played in Jive Bunny snippets. And as I pointed out after his London debut, he teased the audience with 'So many hits... I got more hits than Madonna's got kids. What could I play? Pop Life? Diamonds & Pearls? Raspberry Beret?' as he then jumped from from Lolita to Black Sweat! That's just taking the piss! What he really should have said is 'I'd rather play this than my hits, I've got too many of them, don't like playing them so much anymore, should never have advertised this as a greatest hits tour, I hope you don't mind - or even better don't notice - when I fob you off with a verse and half a chorus of some hits later on, you know, after Black Sweat. I is 2 funky 2nite!'

He is short changing hardcore and casual fans alike with playing no more of some songs than you could hear on an Amazon preview. He really should sort that out ASAP and frankly deserves for it to be pointed out in a negative fashion by any reviewer who can see past licking his arse.

There will be over 300,000 people at this tour. You need to appreciate more than what the minority of ex-NPGMC members may enjoy. And even the majority of those would rather hear the tired old hits than Black Sweat. Frankly I've heard Purple Rain and Kiss live so often I could live without ever hearing either of them ever again. But it's not just about me, is it?

For the record I loved the Gold Experience tour. But I wouldn't have recommended it to any of my friends.

Now I know as loyal Prince fans we have to hate her now, but Murder on the dance floor was a catchy dance tune, and I liked it.

Problem is since then all her "hits" have just murdered the same tune with cack lyrics and same beat.

Fairs fair, she has had one hit, but that doesn’t mean she can’t go to the gig and write a review, she is entitled to her opinion like all of us. She didn't have a good night, sorry hun.

On one a final note, I used to really fancy her mum when I was a kid biggrin

very well thought out response there!

how many hit records have you had???? but yet weve to listen to your drivel, 'Prince can do no wrong' !

She made a very relevant point about the shows not containig as many hits as the fans were promised. That is a fact, not down to opinion, PRINCE IS NOT PLAYING HIS GREATEST HITS.

so please spare me the school ground bully tactics 'we hate her, shes ugly, bla bla bla!

Sophie Ellis-Bextor talentless? I have always found it best not to say anything if you have no idea what you are talking about.

SEB might not have a back catalogue as long as Princes, but then, she hasn't been in the music industry for god knows how long.

Reviews are all about one persons opinion and like any set of fans, if a review is bad, the writer gets slagged. If SEB had praised him to the hilt, the response would have been the total opposite.

Just shows you how fickle we all are.

A lot of you guys are really, really rude. She was disappointed with a gig, so what? That doesn't mean you should act so vile. I feel you reflect very poorly on Prince. I know I wouldn't like to be an active member on a forum where the members have such bad manners.

I don't believe that Sophie was trying to "hit back", she merely stated that she was disappointed and the media spun that to make it more interesting. And now you seem to be hitting back at her..

It just frustrates me.

As a xmas 'treat' my whole family is going to see Take That live - which in all honesty I do not mind.

HOWEVER the support act is apparently moon face and I POINT BLANK REFUSE to be in the venue when she is on. This would've been my opinion regardless of whether she'd done this review or not. There are about 3 'artists' over the last 20 years who I detest 120% and she is the top of the pack.

sorry what's that got to do with anything confused I may also have to go to this - not sure it will be quite as exciting as going to see Prince - suspect there will be alot of screaming neutral

IMO Graham Norton did the best review on the last night - as he said

"C'mon y'all - let me hear you sing, c'mon y'all, shake, c'mon y'all, jump" - Yes Prince -

Everyone is intitled to an opinion!

Some of you should maybe consider what people will think of you when they read some of these posts! My opinion is that some of you are comming across as really rude, insecure, stupid and nasty just because you can't take someone else disagreeing with you. wink

I disagree with Sophie's review however I can't really say that I am remotely bothered by the opinion of one person who I don't know.

Exactly. A review by one person is their thoughts and their thoughts only. I went the same night she reviewed (and at least she did review the gig, unlike many of the reviews which were just terrible) and it was teh only night I went, It wasn't a patch on the previous time I see Prince in 1992 and there was too much jamming for my likeing and I got bored with the piano bit. Enjoyed it overall though, but could have been better.

Was actually gutted he didn't play 7 the night I went. I love that song.
