Bill Oddie makes a show!!!!

He's reviewed show 7 for the Telegraph.

See the first post for the link.

Bill Oddie is a huge fan. I remember seeing him leaving one of the shows in the Hammersmith Apollo the last time with his kids and he looked absolutely delighted. Saw Leo Sayer with his family that night as well.

It's amazing (and great) how many people young and old can still recognise great music and great artists when they see them. I'm constantly amazed when I mention Prince to all kinds of people and they start raving about him, or at least recognise that he is one of the true greats, even if they aren't big fans themselves.

Oddie made a great comment about the show being a celebration of music and humanity. I couldn't put it better myself. I'm glad I'm past the "Prince should be playing this, that:doing this and that." Enjoy the gigs for what they are: A celebration of music and life. Yeah!

It would be great to see Prince on the Goodies, they did quite abit of music, anyone for a funky gibbon live cover, Prince with the hairy hand glove puppet would be great !!! He could even wear Purple dungaree's biggrin

Quite a few comedians are really into Prince - Bill Oddie, Eddie Murphy, Lenny Henry ... I remember one of the funniest Prince sketches was by goodnees gracious me, where they had a Prince look alike in a natural history documentary, as a predator hunting down a deer on the Savannha plains, was very surreal seing him in high heels, sparkly black cat suit and bandanna chasing down a deer for 'the kill' !!!

I didn't need to see a pic of Julian Lloyd Webber as I opened that, scared me half to death! His comments about the O2 being the great rock venue London needs are at odds with every other person I've spoken to about the dreadful design, poor sound and vertigo inducing seats. I guess if you're in a VIP box it IS a great venue! How can he say the sound is excellent?! I was in A1 on Tuesday and couldn't hear a word P said between songs.

Why do they insist on sending people who have no interest in Prince to see him just because they want a famous person reviewing it? Corinne Bailey Rae clearly knew what she was talking about. This toff hasn't even seen him live before. What's P's 'trademark outfit'?!

"he reeled off a string of what are evidently his hits"

*blink, blink* Sorry what? Then he compares him to Cliff Richard. Jeez. To the tower with you, classical music loving ponce!

I wonder wehat the last review will say?

'Yeah, went to London, had some food, went to the O2 arena blah blah blah and oh, by the way, guess who I see? Prince.'

The reviews are getting worse in terms of actually reviewing the gigs.

As bigger fans, we are likely to jump to Prince's defence, but I have to say, I think the general vibe of those reviews is correct. It doesn't matter if they get the odd track wrong, because they are representing the majority audience.

If the casual fan is saying "enough of these medley's" then they are becoming obviously frustrating all round.

For his audience, 400,000 casual European fans, I'm sure they would much rather hear Little Red Corvette in its entirely, than one verse and chorus of three seperate songs. In fact, hearing just a snippet is worse than not hearing it at all.

Prince's attention span for the hits its his biggest problem live. Its almost as if Prince is trying quickly remind us of the hits, so he can spend 15 minutes on an instrumental jam. Fine for him, not for his audience.

Even when he does flesh a hit out, he still can't bring himself to complete it, Lets Go Crazy, Kiss, Girls and Boys, U Got the look. All of them have whole verses and choruses cut out even now.

I also think wasting time on covers (Play that funky music, Wonderful World, Pass the peas, Crazy) is a crime, when he is missing out delivering songs like 1999, When Doves Cry and The Most Beautiful Girl In The World.

To the bulk of the audience, its the lack of those hits that relegates the show from being a truely great concert, to a good concert.

To us more hardcore fans, its fine. The shows are great. But I think P should go one way or the other. Play the hits properly for the general audience, or play the new and obsure stuff for us.

This halfway house never leaves anyone as satisfied as they could be.

I find the covers frustrating, as well as the amount of time apportioned to them, especially when he often does truncated versions of his own songs. Here's a man who has one of the best back catalogues of songs, who sometimes doesn't seem aware of the fact.

Haven't posted a response b4 but I always obey 2 the rules!

I went 2 c Prince for the 6th time on Sunday 9/9 & he was FANTASTIC!! Have been in2 him 4 24 years now but this was my 1st time at O2 & this was The Best yet. I felt 17 again! A man with such a repertoire can only cram in so much & the best way 2 do it is 2 tease & tantilise as only he knows best!

Sure I was disappointed he didn't do the chorus of DMSR but he has always seemed 2 body-swerve doing "When Doves Cry" any time I've seen him perform & HE DID IT 2NITE!!

Was in tears when he sang "Sometimes It Snows In April" but was straight back up on my feet when he went in2 "7".

"Controversy" was the best I've ever heard him do & a gr8 way 2 end a Beautiful Night. It brought back many memories of me & my best buddy growing up with Prince x

well.....ive been going to p gigs since 88....and um yes-its amazing how many white, fat unattractive fans he has!!!!-no shit lok around-the ONA tours in london was like a weightwatchers confrence!!!

I ask again: and wtf has this to do with his concert ????? can you blame the writer of a book that the reader of the book is fat ????? I don't see any conjunction 2 the concert. btw. have been on friday and saturday and saw many, many, many ... many realy nice "thin" ladies (both black and white) - and (and I am not gay!) many well looking men - so whats the problem, that there are fat people - don't they have the right 2 got 2 a prince concert ????

the fact, that the audience is within the thirties doesn't suprise me at all (I am 37) - we all grew up with prince 4 the last 25 years - and we love him since then. my friends and I was very pleased with the kind of audience - when we entered the arena, we were talking about, how comfortable we feel with this kind of audience - go to a U2 concert - it will be just the same.

greats
netzverWalter

I'm in my (late) 30's & luv Prince as much as ever, however, I was surprised that there weren't more purple clad folk at the concert. Myself, yeah I was the crazy one dancing about mad in a sparkly purple top doin' all the Prince signs & moves (not the splits though!) My buddies & I made ever1 stand up round about us cos they wouldn't have been able 2 c anything if they hadn't (except when we sat down to have a cry)!!

Loved the girl at the bar who had the raspberry beret on - I bet she went wild when he sang it!!!

Wish I could afford 2 cum back down 2 another concert b4 he finishes but will just have to settle playing ALL of his CDs back-2-back (my hubby will be pleased?!) Does anyone remember the playlist for Sunday 9/9 gig? I've remembered about 23 so far but know he sang/played more. I'm still on a high lol

Couldn't have said it better myself , this has been happening for years now and its time he treated his songs with the respect that these classics deserve.

Like it or not, I must say that the show 16 review is spot on. Not for me, I'm loving it as it is, but in terms of the 95% audience of non hardcore, who he has made promises to about playing hits. I could listen to him play on piano all night but I don't like to think of one person leaving disappointed at all the hits teasing.
