Tad Williams - Otherland (a series of 4 books) thumbs up!

nod It's a book ive been struggling with 4 nearly a year now, Im VERY intruiged by it (the 1st few chapters with the guy in the War and the dreams of the giant and the bird were WELL freaky!!!) But the intertwinging of the stories put's me off my pace somewhat. But Im determined 2 get there, as Im sure it's all 4 a very good reason. I MUST be interested in it - I bought the rest of the series and Im only quarter of the way thru that 1st book!

Once you get trough the first book you won't be able to stop. I wasn't able to buy the third and second book because they weren't in the shops yet. That was so damn frustrating. The fact is, the story ends in the 4th book, so the other ones leave you wondering what the f*** is happening to the people.

Did you already read the part of the psycho slayer (really sickening and it gets worse eek in the other books )

BTW thanks for all the comments on your books, they sound great, I might read them soon. thumbs up! hug

Catch 22 is absolutely great - if you haven't read that make it your next stop.

Otherwise, here are my 2:

Call if you need me by Raymond Carver

a collection of (mostly published) short stories - if you haven't read any this is the best place to start. He is an amazing writer and very little seems to happen in each story, but he is brilliant at just suggesting a feeling or theme - you come away totally engaged with the characters.

If you need a point of reference - Robert Altman's film Short Cuts is based on a few of Carver's stories.

AND

Man in the high castle by Philip K Dick

He's usually a sci-fi writer (minority report, total recall and best of all bladerunner are all based on his stories) but this isn't sci-fi at all. The premise is that the nazi's and japan won world war II and share america between them. But it is really centred around a few characters, and gives a really interesting view of how people might interact in that kind of society.

REDFEATHERS

I have just finished reading Waiting by Ha Jin

It was infuriating, but then again so was China in that time... a good ending though.

And Across the Nightingale Floor by Lian Hearn...

b]2: 'The Dark Tower' series by Stephen King
Not a big fan of His other stuff, as good as he is, a lot of his writing leaves me cold - but my cousin introduced me 2 the 1st novel, 'The Gunslinger' many years ago, and I've been hooked on this truly wonderful and unique series ever since:

...it's amazing. REALLY different 4 King.
If I HAD 2 pick one of the books as a favourite, I think Id go with 'Wizard & Glass'...
I cant wait 2 get my hands on the final few new books before He retires...(Im waiting on the paperback editions currently)

good choice nod im reading the darktower series at the moment

Rhondab

The End of Blackness by Debra Dickerson

a great commentary on racism, race, and the future of "blackness".

I think I'm going to read some of W.E.B Dubois writings after this. She refers to him a great deal and I haven't read anything by him in a long time.
