Another Hot Take;

Pop music wasn't all that much better "back in the day". You often hear a lot of old timers say how music was so much better when they were younger but I've seen old episodes of Top Of The Pops and I've watched a lot of the MTV 80s and 90s channels and I have to say, most of the stuff back then was bloody awful too lol . Take Prince, Michael Jackson and one or two others out of the equation and what are you left with? Absolute dreck like Abba, Boy George, Sex Pistols and that kind of shite. Don't tell me they're any better than Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Justin Timberlake.

You really can't put Abba, a 70s group, in with Culture Club who was part of the new romantic movement of the early 80s. Totally different stuff going on there. Sex Pistols - punk music; its own thing.

Part of the difference today is the change in the way acts are branded, rather than proving themselves with raw talent that gets honed over time. Timberlake and Swift are musical. They play, can sing, write good stuff, but obviously have help. (Not everyone is Prince, and even MJ tapped producers to get his stuff right.)

There is a note of familiarity or good memories attached to music, which can sometimes filter good and bad music, trading taste for nostalgia. But anytime I shuffle 80s music, I rarely skip anything. I listen to Yacht Rock station too and rarely skip anything.

And honestly - some of the Motown stuff is just boring to me. Of course there are a vast array of glowing moments. But every song on every Jackson 5 or Supremes album wasn't always supreme material. A lot of that 60s psychadelic rock is un-listenable. For me. To others, it's probably great stuff.

The great thing about music is that it does evolve, change, and people change with it and find their groove at some point.

I also like 80s radio Top 40 hits kind of consistently. 50s and pre radio hits, too. The rest ehhh kinda accurate. I just kinda miss the guitar cringe a la Limp Bizkit.

Oh, just yet another underage girl moved into Paisley Park to groom, er, provide a room to (yeahyeah that's the ticket), over a multi-year stretch while he hammered out material like "I Love U in Me" and "Vicki Waiting" in anticipation of the big night.

The fact that Abba, Boy George and the Sex Pistols are all completely different was kind of my point. All different but similarly shit. Just like a lot of today's pop artists. Some pop music back then was good. Some pop music now is good. But chart music in general has always been mostly bad.

I bet by the time my son is old enough to have kids of his own he'll be telling them that all their music is shit and things were much better back in the day when we had Sam Smith and Miley Cyrus etc. And I'll be considered a relic because I grew up with Britney and NSYNC lol

It wasn't. It was inspired by the movie "Scandal" and this is according to Anna Fantastic.

lol what "worst"? "excusing"? I call 'em how I see 'em, brosef.

You can correct me with multiple receipts upon receipts that he never wrote one line of lyric or lick of music with Anna Fantastic in mind--he still moved the girl into his friggin' house when she was underage.

No "worst", whatever conjecture you chose to make--last I checked most of this forum thinks that kind of attraction is perfectly healthy and if he didn't do anything until the clock struck midnight on her 18th he dodged any moral misgivings one could have, right?--he still moved the girl into his crib. That's all I'm saying.

The man had the GOAT records, there's another breaking bulletin. No overplayed MJ collection of singalongs from the 80s will ever hold a candle to Prince's most autopilot throwaways in that era, ever, and that one should really be considered a mild take here of all places...

Eh no I think they're kind of cooler, interesting, novelty shit than similarly shit honestly. I mean I don't rock any of those acts on the reg, but I did not come of age or experience any pop culture from the 80s in real time. My era was the late 90s/early 00s where you'd get your ass kicked saying you like the 80s. I still have always found everything from the 80s was better than random anything from now, even if it wasn't "back in my day," yes even Boy George, Abba and the Sex Pistols. Random 80s trash hit I've never experienced on YouTube algorithm will be better than random trash hit exploding on TikTok at this moment. To me, anyway. Pretty much always.

And my tween boy bands I grew up with were KoRn and Limp Bizkit who were just as big as NSync and Britney here in the states. I kind of think that was better, too, but you can call that nostalgia all you want because maybe that's what it is. Did those acts ever explode outside the states or is it like Seinfeld and Friends internationally?

80s hits, and 50s-and-pre hits up until like wax cyllinder Dixieland, I feel you can make an empirical argument those eras and times were absolutely better quality constructions, purely on Hits anyway.

[Edited 6/14/23 0:22am]

And this how you got the Mayte thread removed.

How you want to see Prince is completely at odds with how you refuse to see what MJ actually did, let alone what he was charged with.

It is understood that there are Prince songs about Anna - This is known eg Lemon Crush and Vicki Waiting. What you said was wrong - Anna herself said that Scandalous was written after Prince saw Scandal and it was about the movie.

Prince's house is not just a children's fantasy playground where he had children much younger than 18 stay to shower, sleep and drink "Jesus juice" with him. It is a working studio renown for working 24 hours with people who were at Prince's beck and call at any time of day. Anna worked as a musician there - working on Batman, the unreleased third Madhouse album and on songs in the Vault.

Your are once again imagining that you know Prince's sexual exploits: Last time it was to the millisecond, now it is to the stroke of midnight.

Here is my hot take: Most people here think that Prince's treatment of women, and indeed other people, was far from ideal. Therefore you don't need to make up things that, arguably the worst affected person, Mayte, denies ever happened.

Friends is HUGE internationally. Seinfeld not so much. Still pretty big though.

I've heard of Limp Bizkit and I think I can remember one or two of their songs. I don't know who Korn is though. But don't judge their popularity outside America on my lack of knowledge of them. I was never really big into any music when I was a kid. I liked the odd Kylie Minogue or Britney Spears song and just a random assortment of whatever was in the charts at the time. But I never really explored anything outside of that. I was the kind of kid that liked "songs", not necessarily the "artists".

Baaaarely. Garrett Morris was funny, too. The schtik of the overall story got old after the first half dozen episodes, which is where I gave up on it.

No. OF4$ was just often sexist.

It was only LoveGalore that teamed up with you when he resorted to sexual harassment as tactic against people that did not agree with him - several people.

Here's the thing: I'm a grown man, in my mid-50s. I am who I am. I know who I am as a person.

Can I be a salty heifer? Well fuck yes. I'm gay and a Gen X. I got shit in me. I'm also smart enough when to say what I say. Never perfect, but I know what I'm doing. Now - how others take that is another issue. Can I be better? Sure. Can you? Totally. Does LoveGalore have anything to do with either of us? Of course not.

I like to think we teamed up on some of the dunderheads on here - although they are far and few between. I've also dealt a lot with un-diagnosed trauma and anxiety, that's only come to light in the last year or so. That plays into a lot of my output in the past. Not Lovegalore. Doesn't give me an excuse. Just laying it out there.

At least I know better with Moulin vs. Moulan. lol lol

But their is always the prospect of you retreating to form even without LoveGalore.

Here is another hot take: It is a false equivalence to like to think that using sexual harassment as a tactic just because people did not agree with Love Galore as being like correcting a spelling error - We are all dunderheads if the measure is the one letter of difference between Moulin and Moulan.

I have included an error just for you.

I would like to think that it is irresponsible of me, just as you would like to think you and LoveGalore were only correcting spelling or word usage by dunderheads.

However, what LoveGalore with you did several times to several people was a chargable offence as sexual harassment in many jurisdictions. Had you done it on in a work group chat/email environment, it would be a sackable offence. It could also have had serious implications for this forum's owner and administration.

Do you really want to go on and on and on about it or just move forward treating all with respect?
