Favorite TV Series of the year.

For most of us , 2020 sucked. One thing for me that made it more bearable was how many outstanding TV series I watched.

What was your favorite TV series this year? You can include the latest season of ongoing shows.

Here are mine.

!. My Brilliant Friend (HBO)

2. Schitt's Creek - Final season

3. Ozark - 3rd season - Netflix

4. Pen15 - Hulu

5 We are Who we Are - HBO

6. Little Fires Everywhere - Hulu

7. Succession - HBO

8. The Queen's Gambit - Netflix

I actually meant to put just about 3 series, but I kept on thinking "what about this series" and felt I couldn't leave any of these out. There are others I really liked that I didn't include. What a year!

"Call me Kat" the American version of "Miranda" is to sitcomy to be good. The trailer looks cheesy.

I think Amy Poehler would have been a better cast for the lead role. confused

Shows I'm looking forward to returning are American Gods, Succession, Flea Bag and Russian Doll. Wish Years and Years had a 2nd season but it's like Watchmen only meant for 1 season.

I think they hired Mayim Bialik hoping Big Bang Theory fans will watch the series.

A bit off topic, but, i just watched the movie 'Dredd' and it afforded me a bit of GOT closure biggrin

...and a few more great additions:

(already mentioned, but i watched all 3 seasons in 2020) 'Ozark'!

'Your Honor' technically started last year, but it's getting deeper!

(also aleady mentioned)'The Boys' & 'Watchmen'

I never really got around to watching The Sopranos. I always watched it until season 3 or 4 and then had to stop for some reason, so this time, with the pandemic and all, I decided to start with season 1 again and now I´m almost done with season 5 and I love this show. It´s really special...very realistic, lots of pop cultural references, interesting characters, very brutal in a realistic way and it´s also an emotional rollercoaster for me. It´s also interesting to get a closer glimpse into Italian-American life in New Jersey.

And it seems like yesterday but it´s been 20 years already, or 13 if you count from when it ended. It´s strange to see a time before the omnipresent smartphones, or a pre-9/11 America, and to see them peddling stolen DVD players. lol

That Tony Soprano is a strange character....sometimes I deeply emphathize with him and find him very likeable and the next scene he is a complete asshole.

But that´s part of the charm of this show I guess.

Not even close to anything else - Lovecraft Country

The acting and the story lines kept me transfixed and what an inspired cast.

Otherwise the usual suspects, Rupauls drag race and it's spinoffs, otherwise my interest in TV extends to stuff like Death in Paradise (British/French crime comedy drama set in the West indies).

I got plenty good loving for ya baby

The Sopranos is one part of The Holy Trinity of TV shows. Absolutely brilliant. Everything about it is great. Writing, acting, directing, music, everything. Brilliant show. And hilarious at times. Funny you should mention that about Tony Soprano sometimes appearing to be a sympathetic character and other times being a complete prick. That element of the show is something that always stuck out to me. There are no good guys and bad guys in The Sopranos. It's not as simple as that. Tony, as an example, wants to be good. Probably even thinks that he is. But deep down he knows he's not. He's a horrible husband, father and friend. But he can't admit that to himself.

The other two shows that make up The Holy Trinity are Deadwood and The Wire. If you've never watched them before, you should. Both equally great. Both shows that lack a clear "good guy" and "bad guy". Although in Deadwood, they're all pretty much bad guys. Just varying degrees of bad.

^ couldn't hurt to give it a try. Well thought out story. Well thought out visuals. I don't know how they do it but they give you a big bang for your buck not skimpy. It's funny the only sex scene is in the first episode, I can't recall any others, so warning, you don't see a lot of nudity, a little, sparingly, a couple a times a season for a hot second.

I just finished watching the final episode and one thing´s for sure, I am going to miss Tony Soprano. sad

What a brillinat masterpiece of a TV series. Now I understand what the fuss was all about.

And unlike some fans, I really liked the ending. But then again, I also liked the final season of LOST, so what do I know? lol

It´s interesting that you mention The Wire because when I told a good friend of mine that I´m finally watching The Sopranos, his immediate reaction was that I should also watch The Wire as soon as I´m done with The Sopranos. It will be weird for me to go back in time again and I know I have a lot of catching up to do but I trust your judgement and will watch The Wire real soon, too.

And Deadwood.

But I´m already missing out big time on the current TV shows, for example The Mandalorian (which I really , really like a lot but I´ve only watched season one so far.)

.

Now that I´ve seen every episode, it dawns on me what a great actor James Gandolfini was. I mean they were all great in The Sopranos, but he was on a whole different level of greatness. May he rest in peace.

Yeah, James Gandolfini was brilliant. A very underrated actor. The subtlety in his work is second to none. He was able to convey so much in small, subtle movements or gestures. Truly one of the greats.

Deadwood and The Wire are definitely up there, quality-wise, with The Sopranos. They're both so much more than their genre would typically suggest. My cousin hates westerns but she sat and watched Deadwood (all 3 seasons plus the follow-up movie) and was literally in tears at the end because it was over. And to call The Wire a cop show is doing it a severe disservice. It tackles virtually every topic there is. From racism, schools and politics to sexual abuse, homophobia and everything in between.

But the best thing about them is that they're not going anywhere. So feel free to jump straight into The Mandalorian season 2 and enjoy it. (I love The Mandalorian too). The Wire, Deadwood and whatever else will be there waiting.
