10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

Predictably twist-y, but solid performances all around, especially John Goodman. Enjoyable film.

Waves (2019) - Traces the journey of a suburban family - led by a well-intentioned but domineering father - as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss.

The tragedy is thankfully confined to the first half to keep the movie from being too downbeat. Stellar acting by the entire cast and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' arresting score help make this one of the better films I've seen this year. 4.5/5

I've met GDT and he was super-sweet!

I've no doubt he was. I've yet to see a film of his that I thought was really bad. Even the more commericial releases like Pacific Rim have some appeal to them.

The Irishman (2019)

Compelling, emotional and yes funny (with Tarantino-esque dialogue) from beginning to end. The greats are all great. DeNiro, Pacino, Pesci, and yes, even Anna Paquin should be in contention for Oscar gold. I believe it will age well and will join Scorsese's top tier of films.

Battleship Potemkin (1925) - In the midst of the Russian Revolution of 1905, the crew of the battleship Potemkin mutiny against the brutal, tyrannical regime of the vessel's officers. The resulting street demonstration in Odessa brings on a police massacre.

It's very ambitious and innovative for its time. I see why it's considered one of the greatest films ever made. 4/5

I watched Yesterday over the weekend. Good movie with a great little storyline. Where would we be without the Beatles?? Indeed!

A couple nights ago we watched "Hot Rod". Like you, I am asking the question "Why"?

Truth be told, I bought "Hot Rod" on DVD about 10 years ago, thinking it would be a funny movie to watch with my then-15-year-old son. And it would have been - back then. For some reason though, we never watched it.

Watching it now with my now-25-year-old-son was a let-down. The movie isn't really all that funny. Sure, it's stupid but I knew that going in. As I've stated before, there's good stupid and there's bad stupid. "Hot Rod" falls mainly right in-between. The stupid isn't necessarily bad but it isn't really good, either.

I can't recommend this to you unless you have a young son and want to watch a stupid movie that has a few laughs but has little to no cursing or sex in it. In other words, it's pretty safe for kids, and they'll laugh a lot at all the wrecks Andy Samberg has.

"Hot Rod" gets 1 1/2 hot dogs out of 5 hot dogs. I'm using hot dogs for my rating system because I've typed "Hot Dog" instead of "Hot Rod" about 15 times. Bring plenty of relish!

The Lighthouse (2019) - Two lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.

I saw this without much knowledge about it beforehand except that I heard it got a lot of buzz and it was a bit weird so I had no idea what kind of surprise I was in for. I knew after the first 15 minutes that I'd love it purely based on how it looks, but the story is simultaneously creepy and funny and then it gets completely mental towards the end. I predict many more viewings when it's released on disc early next year. 5/5

Marriage Story (2019) - Noah Baumbach's incisive and compassionate look at a marriage breaking up and a family staying together.

Exceptional acting (by Adam Driver in particular) with some brutal scenes detailing the divorce process. It made me recall Richard Linklater's Before Midnight, the darkest film in his Before trilogy in its realness. 4.5/5

Prince's dad in Purple Rain would like this movie. "Never get married" is the primary message I got from it.

I'll never watch that movie; what for? I've been happily married for 32 years. There IS a secret, and it's those three little words a man must say to a woman:

I. Am. Sorry.

There are three other words that follow those:

It's. My. Fault.

Finally, the last three words a woman needs to hear, but AFTER those six words above, are:

I. Love. You.

I can't speak to any other marriage pattern, but I know for a dead-solid fact that what I listed above are the keys to a success marriage between a man and a woman. Those who abide by those words will have a happy marriage. Those who don't will be unhappy all the time.

First of all I won't ruin it for anybody. It was a pretty good who done it movie. I guess the killer but some of my reasoning was flawed

Just watched this 3 1/2 hour movie and I'm not sure I feel the same as your review and others I've read.

Love Scorcese but this movie felt off to me. Deniro's eye color was distracting in some shots, was it the CGI? I don't know...

Maybe because he set the bar so high that this felt like he was trying to hard. I don't know, I think I need to watch it again...my wife will not be joining me...

I saw it in a theater and again at home. Like I said, it may need time to "age" (no pun intended) and repeat viewings from audiences to be appreciated over time. But I do think Oscar nods will come for Scorsese and the cast.

But your observations are very fair and Scorsese had to know that the CGI factor had the potential to throw off audiences.

I don't go to movies and usually see all on HBO or other movie channels. Of course I loved Get Out and do think Jordan Peele delivered quite admirably on his second film because of all the clues given and missed by an average audience.

I didn't think it was artsy at all. Upon second or third look I understood

• Why Red's voice was gutteral and raspy
• Why Addy knew what the children needed to do to escape
• Why Addy felt she needed to take over control of the situation
• Why Jason picked up immediately how to communicate with his twin
• Why Addy knew they needed to go to Mexico

Yep! And it was my idea! I wasn't dragged kicking and screaming; I didn't have to go to a bar to get prepared for this; I actually went on purpose.

Before you induct me into the Sophisticated Gentlemen's Club, know that the movie we sent to see at Houston's Museum of Fine Arts was "British Arrows". I'm sure all of you know that is the annual collection of the best commercials on British TV. So I might not be as high-brow as you are, but hey! At least it's a start, right?

And it's a good start, as there were previews for two movies that I want to see. One of them is a foreign film, too! The movies are "Synonym" and "Recorded - The Marion Stokes Project". So there is hope that I might some day get off double-secret probation.

Back to "British Arrows".

The commercials were presented in three levels - Bronze winners; Silver winners; and Gold winners. You know what? Most of the commercials I liked best were in the Bronze category. I can't say there was anything in the Gold category that really grabbed me.

The Irishman (2019) - A mob hitman recalls his possible involvement with the slaying of Jimmy Hoffa.

Overlong perhaps and the action/violence is downplayed in favor of just letting the actors act. Consequently, in the end, I found it extremely rewarding. 4.5/5

Ford vs. Ferrari - 4.25 of 5 (with apologies to Rodeo). I mainly was taking my car loving son for his enjoyment, but I enjoyed it immensely as well. Bale and Damon were both excellent.

Parasite - 4.5 of 5 = I didn't know what it was about but knew if won Cannes, had friends who really liked it, and that it was the highest grossing foreign language film in the US in many years. And yes, it matched the hype eventually, though wasn't sure at first. Can't talk about it without spoilers. Go see it for yourself.

Dolemite Is My Name (2019)

Eddie Murphy's solid slice-of-life biopic about Rudy Ray Moore is a return to form. Here's hoping the momentum continues for him. Other solid performances put in by Keegan Michael Key, and a surprisingly hilarious performance from Wesley Snipes.

JoJo Rabbit (2019)

Equally uproarious and dramatic, this WWII dramedy is absurd in all the right ways. Director Taika Waititi (who also plays the lead character's imaginary Adolph Hitler) has made a good film for the times. A cautionary tale about cults of personality. I hope this film gets some recognition come awards season.
