The previous thread hit the time limit, so here's the next one (and last one for 2016)!

I haven't watched any movies lately although I did watch a real American Horror Story on TV last night. It had some monster named Trump in it. I give it zero stars.

But I did want to reply to a post from Emma in the last thread. Since I can't do it there, I'll start this thread off by doing it here!

Deadpool is technically Marvel but he's not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU movies are the Iron Man trilogy, the Captain America movies, Thor and it's sequel, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Incredible Hulk (NOT the Ang Lee one) and yes, Ant Man. They all form one large story so whereas it's possible to pick one at random and think its good, you don't really get the full story unless you've seen them all in the correct order. Who knows, you may like Ant Man (or at least hate it less) if you've seen the previous installments. Dr Strange is the latest movie in the series and again, it's not 100% necessary to have seen the previous movies to enjoy it, but it does give you a more complete picture if you have. Especially the post credits scene, which I won't ruin here.

Also, it's worth noting that there are several TV shows that are part of the MCU that I would definitely recommend. They are Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Agents of Shield. Iron Fist is coming to Netflix next year along with The Defenders. A show which features all of the Netflix MCU characters.

Man, that sounds like a con. I have to watch a dozen movies in order, and a half dozen TV shows, or I won't get it? You're talking to the guy that hasn't watched a "Star Wars" movie since the third one. Heck, I'm doing great just staying within a month of new "The Big Bang Theory" episodes! Pass.

The funny thing is, the one Marvel movie I did watch and absolutely loved ("Deadpool") is NOT in the MCU.

The Huntsman Winter's War 2.5/5 I'd like to say I have no idea what I was watching but I did get the gist of it and was still scratching my head as to why this even came to be, but the others watching it with me enjoyed it so there must have been something to it I just didn't get. I liked the mirror, that was a valid history type learning thing.

I like Argo, but give Joy a barely passing grade. I don't agree with all the accolades that film got.

YEAH! I'm running on 4 hours' sleep but just thinking about "Rocky III" makes me want to run across the street to the gym!

I've never seen "Life of Brian" but I really should. Maybe now that I know how to access the Netflix account I've been paying for these last 10 years, I can find it and watch it.

^ Looking at the comedy you like... I'd say "Life of Brian" is worth a peek.

Monty Python in brilliant comedic mode without alot of the more abstract stuff - which makes it a more accessible film with a proper storyline (unlike their sketch films)

Definitely a Christmas Day film.

Hey, did you ever see the John Landis remake of "Twilight Zone"? Did you catch the Neidermeyer reference in it?

neon demon - visually flashy, fairly mental movie that almost bored me at times, but it's always very nice to look at and it definitely lingered with me in a way that most films never do. elements of gasper noe and david lynch abound, & a great pulsating synth soundtrack helps a lot too. 3.5/5.

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) I give a 4 out of 5

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) I give a 5 out of 5, its the best because of the big reveal about Luke and Darth Vader it was a moment

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) I give a 4 out of 5

I noticed in the Special Edition on Foxtel that that Hayden's Anakin Skywalker replaces Sebastian Shaw who played it in the original film. Why did George Lucas do this? because I thought when Anakin finally died he would be much older like Ben Kenobi and Yoda's ghosts?

I considered seeing this, but then read that reviews were very mediocre. I may still give it a chance if it comes on TV or a streaming rental ad for it catches my eye.

i skipped 'only god forgives' for the same reason (though i still may take a crack at it eventually) and i was planning on taking a pass on this one after seeing the generally middling reviews. i ended up giving it a chance after one of the podcasts i follow gave it an interesting overview. they were mixed on it certainly, but said there enough interesting & flat-out deranged elements to make it recommendable, and I would go along with that now that i've seen it.

Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)

Pure fun, and relatable on so many levels. It's uncanny in recapturing the look and feel of 1980.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) I really enjoyed this film, it had fresh faces and familar ones (it was great to see Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher) plus there was alot of action. Looking forward to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I give this a 4 out of 5

just felt like wasting some time with this one. i enjoy the subtle humor, but it's not as funny as i remember. i'd give it a 3/5. harold faltermeyer's music is definitely the best part of the movie.



this was a good one, if a little slow at times; but the slowness builds the tension. it's a 90 minute movie, but feels like 2 1/2 hours. i HATE the piss-yellow filter that it's filmed through/processed with, but overall a fun little freak out. 4/5

High-rise - i've really liked every ben wheatley film to this point, and a version of a jg ballard class war story ought to be tailor-made for this moment in time, but this ended up feeling a touch flat. there are things to admire in it certainly, but something that i thought ought to be major seemed like a bit of a non-event. 3/5

Miles Ahead (2016)

Cheadle's directorial debut is like his subject matter: sometimes frustrating, always interesting. I loved Emayatzy Corineadli as Frances Taylor. A good, almost great, film that does Miles decent justice in the end, thanks largely to Cheadle's great portrayal.

Star Trek: Beyond (3 stars for...Good...)


It was decent but the entire plot felt rushed..The Studio is trying to keep the cast "Young looking" but half of the crew looks middle-aged already....

Last night we were perusing the cornucopia of channels on our new DirecTV system. Nice! I re-watched "Deadpool", which gets a reaffirmation of its previous high rating.

Then last night we watched "O Brother Where Art Thou?" It's still great!

The lines in that movie are sublime. I could type up a few but just go here and read all of them for yourself. HINT: You kind of had to have seen the movie to grasp the inflection and tonal subtleties of the lines: http://www.imdb.com/title...590/quotes

My favorite line wasn't in that, though. I laughed the loudest when Clooney approached his daughters at the rally and they filled him in on what his wife was up to:

He's a suitor! I loved that line. She said it twice but I loved it in connection with "bona fide".

Now, I know that SOME of you probably think my favorite scene was when Big Dan Teague (John Goodman, an American legend IMO) squished that frog and threw it against a tree. Nope! That particular frog wasn't hurting anyone, especially me. I am a live-and-let-frogs-live guy except when it comes to frogs in my pond. They should know better by now than to come to my pond and given that I haven't had any frogs in years, apparently I've changed frog culture and evolutionized them into staying away from my pond.

The dialogue in "O Brother Where Art Thou?" is so perfect that you forgive its plot holes and unbelievable coincidences. You really don't care what they are doing, as long as they're talking.

I give this movie a rating of four Totally Alive Frogs out of Five Totally Alive Frogs. But remember - if you ever fall for a siren, don't let them love you up and turn you into a frog!

i went to see the big dr. strange movie this weekend. it was perfectly fine, and I liked some of the trippy effects, but in the end I was a touch let down by how conventional this was. I don't expect film studios to spend $100m to make a jodorowsky-style acid-trip experiment, but i did have some hope that marvel might push the boundaries a bit more than they did here. It's still pretty good, fun to watch, breezy pace, but it doesn't deviate from their formula too much. 3.5/5

i also went to see the arrival two or three weeks back. i don't wanna give it a final rating, because i went to a late showing after having an enormous meal (indian buffet, fantastic) and i am pretty sure i dozed off at least twice. not a reflection on the movie, which i liked quite a bit (the parts I remember) but i need another watch before really passing judgment.

It was my most anticipated movie of the year, but in the end, it was just another product--albeit a good one--in the Marvel Studios assembly line.
