La la Land. Simply amazing. I walked out knowing it was an instant classic. Smart, sexy and fun. And also has one of the best opening scene in a movie ever.

For a first time director, he hit it out of the park.

Everyone on this board loves music, so I know everyone here will love it. It not just the best movie of the year, but one for film history. That good.

La La Land was alright but I wouldn't go as far as to say it was the best movie of the year. It wasn't even the best movie I saw that day (I saw Rogue One that day).

I like Rogue One a lot too. I saw it on opening day.

Maybe it's just my love of music and jazz and fun romantic movies. But la La Land was a very enjoyable film. People clapped after certain numbers and I had to resist that temptation too because I only do that at live shows and it felt weird clapping in a movie theater.
But at 92% critics and 90% audience, I know most people who saw it feel the same as me.
It was just such a fresh unexpected joyful and bittersweet movie, so out of the blue, and so utterly charming that I feel it deserves all the praise it's getting.

And Rodeo, ...Ryan Gosling is perfect, and you'll love how his character plays out. But Emma Stone was amazing. What an amazing performance. Both were amazing as well as everyone else.

The writer director of the movie is super young, and you can see it in the energy and work and dedication on the screen. It's so tightly put together that only someone in their 20's or early 30's could throw so much into it feel so fresh.

Hard sell to say La La Land was the best film of 2016, to anyone who's seen Moonlight. Can't wait to check it out though.

Just saw Passengers, I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. It was very good, but they could have done so much more to make it great. The ending especially could have been better.
Special effects were great. Was over 2 hours long, but didn't feel like it. Had some comedic moments, not much action. It's more of a drama/romance.

agree. i would've enjoyed more scenes with both mancuso and arthur interacting with jim and aurora. not all in the saem scene but more time for mancuso and arthur.

I was really disappointed with this movie. The plot had good potential, but it just wasn't all that funny. Definitely should have done some editing. I'd give it 2 out of 5 stars.

I instantly think of this film as the one Sexton watches every Christmas, and the one with the winter scarf.

I just watched Suicide Squad and Tarzan from Redbox and came away less than impressed.

Suicide Squad:

As a huge fan of most superhero movies, this was a jumbled mess. Too many characters on the Squad (get rid of Captain Boomerang, Katana, Killer Croc-all underdeveloped and uninteresting). I really liked Leto's Joker and Robbie's Harley Quinn. Will Smith seemed uninspired, but given the plot, I could see why. Everything seemed rushed and I know they had re-edits, reshoots, and things left on the cutting room floor, but this seemed SyFy channel quality in some spots. The Enchantress was boring (much like Doomsday from Batman V. Superman) and the whole supernatural being, end of world, mass destruction template is a bit played out. Had potential, but I can't see the DC Extended Universe makeing sequels to this (although there is a Harley Quinn movie in the works). 6/10

Tarzan:

Christoph Waltz was ok in the role of the main antagonist, but Tarzan, Jane, and Samuel L. Jackson were bleh. The CGI in some spots looked horrible. The movie was just a straightforward summer popcorn movie, so my expectations were real low when I rented this. 5/10

2016 was a really good year in movies. Something for everyone. Good to see that it's easier for people to get to see smaller films and good to see so many newer faces directing and writing movies. There was a time that it was only a handful of people writing, directions and scoring the movies. It was so predictable and and a lot of the bigger names were just phoning it in.

A great new face is villeneuve who directed The Arrival. Though I'm not a fan of the Arrival like everyone else is, i have loved everything else he's done.

Damien Chazelle who directed La La Land is another great new face.

Even old timers like Clint Eastwood are still making great movies as with Hacksaw Ridge.

Steven Speilberg's movie this year was not a memorable one. I kept forgetting I already saw it. It was so bland. I keep forgetting what it's called. The ODB, The
OPP, the BFD whatever...

Hacksaw Ridge is Mel Gibson, not Clint Eastwood. But yeah, I really liked it. Mad Mel should direct more movies.

I really liked Arrival but my two favourite movies last year were Captain America Civil War and Rogue One. Both were far better than I expected and both managed to bring something relatively fresh to their respective franchises.

Yes you're right Mel Gibson. Eastwood was Sully. Another great movie.

Arrival and Cival War were ok, but I walked away from both as pretending to be kinda smart but...

Cival War is a comic book movie and I love the Antman Spider-Man tone, but the policial commentary/tone of Captain America movies at are cringeworthy to me. The ending was as bad as they get, but standard now for Marvel films.

Arrival is a Emperors New Clothes with critics who felt it was cerebral because they could barely keep up with it, but it's just flawed story telling and not very cerebral at all. If time travel tropes and knowing the importance of communication are fresh and new to you, then ok. But I was let down because I expected more from Denis Ven... whatever his last name is spelled. A let down an over-hyped for my tastes. I think this is more of an echo-chamber movie that will not age very well as people start to realize it's a not really that good of movie. There will be backlash mockery for liking this movie later mark my words. Convoluted does not equal smart. But again, the director is one of my favorites and the cinematography is fantastic.

I see Moonlight tonight. Heard a lot of good things about it.

Moonlight.
Finally saw this one. Technically amazing. Cinematography wow. Direction and acting was incredible. A great film but emotionally brutal to watch. And I thought Spotlight that dealt with the abuse by clergy on kids was great yet hard to watch, this was brutal to watch. Anything that deals with kids so realistically and brutal is difficult to watch. Actually if it wasn't so beautifully shot I don't think I could have sat through it. It will more than deserve any award it gets.

But like Spotlight, or any other great film that deals with a tough subject matter, it is one I will not watch again.

This films reminds me of David Lynch's amazing "The Elephant Man" that is a marvel to see a film so beautifully and amazingly shot, yet I've never gone back and watched it again.

Having seen a couple of other notable movies about growing up, "Edge of 17" comes to mind, a comedy but still the juxtaposition of a moping 17 yr old girl coping with the death of her dad and her problems vs this kid..

Amazing film. Brutally honest. Award worthy all the way. Great acting all around.
I was even marveling at the sound design. Yes it's absolutely beautifully shot, but i couldn't help but notice how great the sound and sound editing was. The sound of the environment around you in this film was equally amazing and put you in this world. Sound is something I usually overlook but it's simply so well you can help but admire how well it's done.

I recommend everyone to check it out, but I won't be rushing to see this again any time soon.

la la land - the best time i've had watching a movie since sing street, which i watched about 17 hours ago. i agree with sexton that there actually could have been more musical numbers, and that the beginning and ending sections were so great that the rest can't help but suffer a little in comparison. so it wasn't perfect, but this was still so terrific. leave your inner curmudgeon at the door. 4.5/5

so Far Moonlight has swept up ALL the Best Supporting Actor Awards for Mahershala Ali..

Moonlight has also swept all the Best Director & Best Screenplay Awards...

Moonlight is edging out La, La, Land in all the Best Picture Awards..

The Golden Globes are given out this Sunday, Moonlight is nominated for 6 Globes and I predict it'll walk away with Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Director & Best picture...

Last Knights ( 3 Stars for better than expected..1hr55min)

An interesting period-piece tells the story of the Last Courageous Knights destined to Honor The Code among all Knights...The movie focuses on fight-scenes when it should have taken more time to develop the main-plot....Morgan Freeman plays a rather interesting role and like always you get goose-bumps becuz he's God....Clive Owen gives one of his classic performances. Clive has the ability to make you believe..I Love his portrayal of The Drug-addict-Hoe Doctor on Cinemax's The Knick....

I agree with Movie Critics when they say the movie lacked character development...

Fences (2016)

The cast pushed this movie to another level. Trying to stage a play within a film is difficult, and Denzel Washington does an good job. But the performances are what carry the day.

Viola Davis was towering; if there was a better acting performance in 2016, I haven't seen it. Denzel gave one of his best performances, and the supporting cast, led by the wonderful Stephen Henderson as Bono, should get some award considerations as well.

Viola is winning all The Best Supporting Actress awards..She'll take home the Golden Globe on Sunday.

Denzel SHOULD be winning all the Best Actor Awards but Ben Affleck & Matt Damon are the 2-Man Machine behind little brother Casey Affleck getting the Best Actor Oscar...Keep in mind, Casey recently settled a Sexual Harassment suit out of court.....The Media decided to keep it hush-hush since there is a Machine backing Casey's ultimate road to Gold Glory.....

You see what they did to Nate Parker....

I'd probably put Denzel as favourite but Casey Affleck WAS really good too so it could go either way. It might be that I'm slightly biased but I still think Denzel will win. Especially after what happened last year, there might be some sort of knee jerk reaction so that non whites may win so that the Academy can say "See, we're not racist". Not that Denzel doesn't deserve it anyway though, because I genuinely think he does and I'd be disappointed if he doesn't.
Regarding Casey Affleck's sexual harrassment suit, I don't think that should even be considered when it comes to voting for best actor though. Whatever he did or didn't do doesn't change the performance he gave in the film. If Al Pacino was outed as a mass murderer it wouldn't detract from my enjoyment of Dog Day Afternoon, The Godfather etc.

hmm The politicking that goes on for the Oscars is as intruiging as actual politics.

You see what they did to Nate Parker....

There was some politicking behind that too, as I understand it (the "they" behind it changes, depending on who's telling it).

Well made, but I think I'd probably enjoy the debates in toto more than this film.

The focus here is mainly on the clash of personalities and I would've preferred it to be more on the clash of ideologies.
