the special effects were amazing (especially the Tarkin and Princes Leia scenes) and Darth Vadar was a total badass So even though they promoted this as a stand alone film.....it really was a bridge that links the prequels to the original films. A job well done 4 out of 5

Just saw Passengers, I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. It was very good, but they could have done so much more to make it great. The ending especially could have been better.

Jennifer Lawrence resembles young Drew Barrymore a LOT in this movie. Special effects were great. Was over 2 hours long, but didn't feel like it. Had some comedic moments, not much action. It's more of a drama/romance.

Jackie (2016)

A great cast, and amazing performance in the title role by Natalie Portman. Strong turns by John Hurt, Billy Crudup, Greta Gerwin and Peter Saarsgard help lift this movie, which was a bit uneven, and went on about 15 minutes too long.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999) - A New York City doctor, who is married to an art curator, pushes himself on a harrowing and dangerous night-long odyssey of sexual and moral discovery after his wife admits that she once almost cheated on him.

After watching it many times around the holidays, I still find it to be a fascinating movie that looks beautiful. I love how colorful Christmas lights permeate almost every scene. And Nicole Kidman--what a statuesque beauty she was back then. 4.5/5

i actually just finished watching the lobster for the second time. i like it quite a bit, but i think i'd probably give it a 3.5/5, mainly because i think the first half is much more interesting, engaging & enjoyable than the last.

Last night we watched "The Ref". Well, I watched most of it. It sucked.

I cannot believe some of the TV people put "The Ref" on their Best Christmas Movies Ever lists. WTF?!? This movie is neither good nor is it a Christmas movie (unlike "Die Hard", which IS great and IS a Christmas movie).

Unfortunately, I knew this movie was going to suck when I read that it's a "dark comedy". There's no such thing! A movie cannot be "dark" AND be a "comedy". Those are mutually exclusive terms. They do not go together, and they never will. Those of you who think something can be a "dark comedy" are being sold a bill of goods. WARNING - Do NOT try to sell that bill of goods to me. Do NOT reply with your list of your favorite "dark comedies". I will not watch them, as I know they will only be depressing and not funny at all.

Take "The War of the Roses". That was the first "dark comedy" I ever saw. I remember when it was announced, Danny DeVito was promoting it on a show. He rubbed his hands together, put on that mischievious face, and said, "We're gonna have some FUN!" Little did I know that his idea of "fun" was having two people who previously loved each other spend 90 film minutes trying to actually kill each other. WTF is "fun" about that? I wish I'd had some tomatoes to throw at the screen when the movie ended, and they're both lying on the floor dying from falling off a chandelier, and Michael Douglas tries to hold his wife's hand (I forgot who played her, thank God), and she pushed it away with her final breath. Screw Danny DeVito! If it wasn't for his brilliant work on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" then I'd file him into the Never Ever Watch Anything This Actor Is In file, along with such luminaries as Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Sean Penn, Steve Carrell (it's ALWAYS a mistake for a comedian to go dramatic), Jake Gyllenhall, and Ryan Gosling.

So now we have "The Ref". It's about some trainwreck of a family - who are all assholes, so there's literally no one to root for - who get kidnapped by Denis Leary, a jewel thief who got covered in cat piss and had to escape from a Rottweiler by (I guess) killing it.

I have this great list of Men I Would Like To Punch In The Mouth. It's generally made up of political goons like Bill Maher, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter. I don't think Denis Leary has ever officially been put on this list, but he should be. He's a tool.

As you may know, I am a virulent crusader against smoking. Denis Leary, on the other hand, loves smoking and promotes it every chance he gets. I've been disgusted with him since he broke on the scene as a comedian and said that not only did he like to smoke, he hoped he got cancer some day. WTF?!? What a complete moron. What an insensitive asshole. I probably should forgive him for that remark but I've never seen him walk it back, so fuck him. Sorry for the f-bomb there, but seriously - fuck that guy.

Anyway, Leary kidnaps these unlikable characters and immediately gets fed up with their bickering. Unfortunately, even though he has a loaded gun in his possession, he does not shoot them. He should have, it would have been in everyone's best interests - including those who would have gotten shot.

Oh no, he has to Explain Life to them, as they have never worked in their lives and he has. Yeah right! He's a guy that steals stuff from people. Even if the current assholes he has as captives haven't ever worked for anything, you can damn well bet that pretty much everyone else he's stolen from in his life DID earn what they have. Deins Leary stole stuff that had not only financial value, but almost certainly had irreplaceable sentimental value. Thisnk about it - if someone stole all your jewelry, you know that the worst part wouldn't be the financial loss. It would be losing the wedding ring that your great grand-father gave your great grand-mother. So pepole that steal that kind of stuff are a special kind of asshole. That important, salient plot point is completely ignored in favor of making Denis Leary look like the least asshole out of all the assholes in this movie.

I got fed up at this point and left, and then came back just as Denis Leary was punching out Santa Claus and then getting help escaping from the asshole family's son. Of COURSE that's how the movie ends.

To suffice, I will NEVER EVER watch a "dark comedy" again. They all suck. This movie sucked. I give it a rating of 0. There's no point in coming up with a clever rating system, because 0 is always going to be 0.

I lost a bet and saw La La Land instead of Rogue One. I actually really liked it...very entertaining and well done. Emma Stone was awesome.

Hope to see RO next week.

We just finished "Being There". Now, THERE is a MOVIE!

They really don't make them like that any more. Phenomenal movie. Incredible cast. Some of the best character actors ever to grace the screen. A plot that you couldn't make up, yet a plot that we basically lived in the 2016 election. True!

I won't give away the ending but the best thing about this entire movie was I'd forgotten how it ended. Brilliant!

Oh! And Ben was Illuminati! Did you catch his triangle mausoleum with the all-seeing eye at the top? Loved it!

I give "Being There" 5 Well-Tended Gardens out of 5 Well-Tended Gardens. I'm sure Rafael would approve!

I'd watch any movie with Brendan Gleeson front and center. Have you seen The Guard? Along with Calvary and In Bruges, those three films make an excellent acting showcase for him.

I am currently watching "First Blood", the original Rambo movie. I think the women are going to make me go shopping before it's over so this is a live-streaming review!

But before we begin, I also caught the last 30 minutes of a movie I've always wanted to see - "Escape From New York". It has Kurt Russell, and he plays a guy named Snake! With an eyepatch! He apparently blows away the entire city of New York, or so I thought. But what I saw was really bad.

Even with the psychiatrist from "Halloween", and Harry Dean Stanton, and 70's pin-up girl Adrienne Barbeau, it's just not a good movie. Or a campy movie. Or a good campy movie. Oh well, at least I didn't waste an entire two hours on it. Out of respect to the awesome Kurt Russell, I'll just rate this one Incomplete.

Back to "First Blood". Wow, is it great!

I'd forgotten how talkative Rambo was in the beginning. He was a veritable Chatty Cathy. And a regular guy, too. Even after he went commando in the woods, he was still a regular guy who just happened to be a badass Medal of Honor winner. That's one thing that makes this movie so great.

It's totally believable. Rambo doesn't kill people in unbelievable ways. He lives off the land and improvises with what he has available. It's great!

I'm at the part now where Col. Troutman has shown up and talked to Rambo via the radio. Rambo tells them how it is and of course the cops aren't buying it. So we all know what happens next!

Before the women take me to Candles and Such, or Throw Pillows A' Plenty, or where ever we're going, let me just give "First Blood" the rating it deserves:

haven't seen the guard, and it doesn't seem to be on any of the streaming sites unfortunately - but i'll keep an eye open for it.

La La Land (2016) - A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles.

It started off with a bang and I thought, “Wow, this movie is going to be amazing!” And it ended with a bang too—I loved the ending actually. The middle was a more conventional movie than I expected and I would have preferred even more musical numbers throughout. Having said all that, it’s still an excellent tribute to classic Hollywood musicals. 4.5/5
