War Witch or Rebelle 4/5. Saw it a longtime ago don't remember posting it. I think it was a excellent blend of cultural views. A harsh world separate from anything I've ever known or seen but a world reality, with its central theme a basic love story between 2 young kids. Very tragic and very sweet.

Ok, I've been binging a bit over the last couple of days.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom - 7/10 - Idris did well. As always, the book is always better! Epic man to capture the essence of; hard era to depict. Naomi Harris was underutilized but it was Mandela, not Winnie. Key supporting characters not developed at all

Savages - 8/10 (with Laura Linney and PSH) - I love these two actors - real hard stuff with end of life issues for an aging parent who wasn't a good parent; i'll miss PSH

Mud - 7.5/10 with Matthew McCaugnahey - I disagree with the "newly minted American classic" description. Good though, pretty original, left a lot to be imagined with the "backstory". Great child actors though!

Red Hook Summer - 5/10 - Easily my least favorite Spike Lee film. Had a couple of surprises in it. I hated the caricaturish portrayal of Christians and Christianity. The soundtrack distracted instead of enhanced this one for me, starting with the opening sequence of Flik's arrival in NY. Poor use of Nate Parker, i think they could've gone with an unknown in that role rather than underutilize him

Upstream Color (2013)

Beautifully shot. A suspenseful, ludicrous, inspiring and shocking movie (at alternate times and sometimes at the same time). Only at the end did I sense a nuanced and surprising allegory for God and atheism. Neitzsche might have loved this flick, which, who knows, may go down as a 21st-century classic.

starstarstar1/2

Just curious, how would you map this out as an allegory of God and atheism?

Stated very roughly . . . the pig farmer narrative.

His attempts to orchestrate the lives of the main characters leads to disaster. He is present throughout, constantly trying to manage his charges on the farm and in the world. The characters' lives are tied to a couple of the pigs. The characters finally find the farmer, discover the truth, kill the farmer and they and several others take over management of the farm and tend to the health of the pigs.

The message perhaps is that the belief construct has reached its limits, and that small-m men need to take control of their fates. That's what I read out of it.

Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Why have you not committed this to memory? mad

Hi guys,

Myself and my wife watched this over the weekend, kinda based on the reviews here and I am wondering if I saw the same movie as ye........ What was there to like about the movie? Scarlett spoke only 50% of the time, 80% of the movie is the very same with just different guys repeating the same thing. The ending left nothing closed and told us nothing about their kind (how,when,why)....Really perplexed as to any redeeming feature it had except SJ getting her kit off......Am I missing something?........Genuinely curious as to what you liked about it........For me I didn't find much of a plot / story and the ending was too open.......(I know that not every movie has to have a conventionalstory/plot )... Each to their own I guess......Now where did I put my copy of Expendebles 2 (only joking)

Oh no!!! falloff boxed

I'm sorry logger. Each to their own you are quite right.
There's good reason why I didn't bother watching with my other half - he's a mainstream kind of guy.

Ok, please watch out for the reviews of rodeoshro instead - he loves the Expendables.

For me under the skin was about atmosphere, creepiness, trying to figure out wtf was going on - that's what I like!

What I DON'T like: shouting, shooting, movies about straight ex-cons talked into that one last job zzz

Don't watch anything I like shake
I'm the mistake you wanna make

biggrin

Thanks for the reply........ It must be me as I didn't like Drive with Ryan Gosling and it seems the whole world loved that......I must be an Expendebles guy unbeknownst to my self biggrin

I just though it would never end. You and Sexton are normally pretty good to follow on your recommendations.

Saw Noah at the weekend also..... Give it about 5 / 10

Thanks again.

I liked that one a lot.

There were many things I liked about this - and I'm a Gerwig fan - but I'd give it 2.5/4.

razz Could be.....No guns,no bad language,no nudity and no elephants riding a bike....It's made for you......You should wait for the Bru-Ray version as you can see the dullness of the story in superb clarity...... Have the boiled milk and slippers on standby.

Isn't this the story of the little blonde boy who goes to Heaven and meets Jesus?

Yep....It's kinda boring. Not sure if this was in the cinema but looks like a "made for TV" movie.

Narco Cultura 8 / 10

Documentary Movie all about narco corrido singing and life in Mexico....Mexico is in serious trouble and this highlights how dangerous it is.I wouldn't go there if I won a free trip. Its not worth the risk..... www.borderlandbeat.com is a fascinating website if you want to know what is really going on in Mexico....Go back on previous months to see older stories.

Movie is a good insight into the mindset of some of the people.

Black Rock - 2/5 Despite being written by Mark Duplass and the presence of a few other people with indie cred (whatever that's worth), this really was a pretty generic, forgettable chase/thriller.

not bad. I told my kid Gollum played Cesar - amazing! And I think it was KidADynamite who commented she thought Cesar is kind of hot LOL - he does have a pleasant face.

3/4 it's pretty good, compared the the ape part in 2001: A Space Odyssey

Los Olvidados (1950) - A group of juvenile delinquents live a violent and crime-filled life in the festering slums of Mexico City, and the morals of young Pedro are gradually corrupted and destroyed by the others.

Sometimes when I watch classic films, my mind can wander and I'll check my watch, but that wasn't the case here. I found the story to be remarkably contemporary, particularly a line spoken near the end which I immediately thought, "I hear that all the time today." Amazing. star star star star 1/2
