The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - The adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.

This is one of the most impeccably art-directed films I've ever seen. The visual symmetry is overwhelming--right down to the use of a 1.37:1 pillar box frame to make many shots look more perfect. This is my favorite movie of 2014 so far. star star star star star

I can't wait to see this. biggrin

I saw it on Saturday. I didn't like it as much as Moonrise Kingdom, but the performances are great and it is visually stunning (as all Wes Anderson films are).

The Legend of Hercules

The Legend of Hercules (2014) Poster

The origin story of the the mythical Greek hero. Betrayed by his stepfather, the King, and exiled and sold into slavery because of a forbidden love, Hercules must use his formidable powers to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom.

Director:

AS A PUBLIC SERVICE: Avoid this garbage. Thank me later. Boy loves girl. Girl bethrothed to another. Jumps through hoops to get her back. That synopsis contains more excitement that the banally predictable Legend of Hercules.

Yeah I normally love Scorcese's films, but this one for some reason just didn't do it for me. I appreciate what was done with it, but the pacing and energy of it is just so alien from my personality type that it was hard to stay into it.

Nymphomaniac Vol I

I will wait until I see the second volume to judge it completely but its slightly different than von Triers previous movies in terms of the structure, its a little more complex, but the storytelling overall was excellent. Intellectualizing nymphomania in the most odd of ways. Thusfar Im giving it **** out of ***** stars.

I watched two movies on the flight back from Germany:

"Last Vegas"

This movie was pretty good. The "I'm so old" jokes were really stale, but there were lots of other good jokes in it. The cast was awesome - except for 50 Cent. Not that he was bad, mind you - it was how he was dissed! Dang, I'm surprised he didn't pop a cap in someone's ass, and then go make it rain at da club or something. They sure made him look like a doofus. Anyway, good movie. If you are 50 or over, I recommend it. If you are not yet 50, you probably won't think it's very funny.

"R.E.D. 2"

Good lord what a stupid movie. I really liked the first one, but this movie is just plain dumb (or "plane" dumb, since I watched it on a plane. Man, I wish I could have watched "Snakes On A Plane"! How cool would that have been?!?). It redefines the word "stupid". I'm all for ignoring plot holes in favor of good action (like, for instance in "Last Vegas" how they got there on a Saturday, and then somehow were able to party two nights in a row before it was Sunday), but this was just over the top. Skip it, trust me.

The LEGO Movie (2014) - An ordinary LEGO minifigure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil LEGO tyrant from gluing the universe together.

I found it to be unexpectedly deep. star star star star

Raging Bull (1980) - An emotionally self-destructive boxer's journey through life, as the violence and temper that leads him to the top in the ring, destroys his life outside it.

I had heard this movie was all kinds of awesome before seeing it, but I was skeptical assuming it was a boring black & white Rocky. I was so wrong. star star star star star

I LOVED Gilbert Grape! rolleyes

The Beach is a MESS

You just love it because any movie with Tilda gets an automatic 4 stars just because she is in it!

I've never seen The Beach. tease

I rated both Young Adam and We Need To Talk About Kevin 3.5 stars on the org. Those movies weren't great. I've yet to figure out what is going on in Female Perversions so I can't give that movie four stars either--from memory, I'd say 2.5 stars.

And if I ever were to see any of the Chronicles of Narnia movies I very much doubt I'd give them four stars. lol

Narnia is only good if you like a kids movie with looooong battle scenes verging on the gruesome.

I never stated any opinion about the movie Rocky in my post. I said I assumed Raging Bull would be a boring, black & white version of it.

The Cinematheque at UW-Madison has been doing Hitchcock movies on Sundays all semester. I've seen Rebecca, Strangers on a Train, Rear Window and North by Northwest. I missed The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes. mad

Cinematheque shows all their films for free, so it's worth it - despite not being able to have food or drink in the venue.

CAPTAIN AMERICA : Winter Soldier.

Better than the first one but still has problems. When they aren't being cliche, the writers repeatedly write themselves into corners and then conveniently drop the looming problems with the scenarios they create.

Black Widow seems tamer than in the Mighty Avengers, which this movie clearly learned from. Captain America, unlike Nick Fury and Black Widow seems to have forgotten NY.

His naivete wears thinner this time around.

I am currently one hour into "Saving Mr. Banks". It sucks. The lady that wrote "Mary Poppins" was apparently the most depressing, rude b**** that ever lived.

If it gets any better, I will update this review. If it gets any worse, I will have to get very, very drunk.

UPDATE: Thirty minutes left in the movie. Colin Ferrell just died. I am not sure this movie could get any worse. I want to throw this computer at the TV. I hate this movie.

UPDATE 2: So she's actually supposed to be a human. Honestly, by this point I just don't care. She was way too unlikeable for way too long.

UPDATE 3: What a wretched movie. It totally ruined "Mary Poppins". From now on, that book and movie will be associated with absolutely nothing but depression.

This movie sucked more than any movie I may have ever seen. Do not ever watch it.
