42 (2013) - The life story of Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey.

It looked like a TV movie. The acting was fine, but the style of the film was very conservative--which may be appropriate considering the subject matter. I just prefer movies that push the envelope more. star star 1/2

Yeah, thanks. I haven't seen it yet but it always makes me cringe a little when I see this subject matter handled with a PG-13 glove.

Perhaps it's a decent take for young kids and family, but part of the endless array of problems we still face seems to me to at least partly stem from not dealing in the absolute earnestness that might lead to a deeper understanding/empathy.

Iron Man 3 3/5

They all have their problems. I hated the repeated references to the Avengers movie. Let the Iron Man trilogy be what it is. The only reason it to mention it more than once (as a reference that this is post NY alien invasion) is for commercial purposes to tie it to the more successful movie.

They should've had more faith in their work.

The plot is recycled from a tv series. Not Fringe, or Heroes, but another series with humans with enhanced abilities recruited to work for the government. Sort of.

That the exploding people was rehashed (I think Fringe did something similar also) from television, I found weak and uninspiring. As the series I can't even name was cancelled (looked it up, it was Alphas.)

The anxiety attacks kept reminding me of Martin Lawrence ruining Bad Boys II.

Piper getting off a little aggression was interesting, but the suit apparently shrinking to fit her?

I found her adjustment to it, too smooth. Nothing suggests she'd every toyed with them before but she has no problem . . . . .

The Mandarin? He's not East Asian at all. Why not just call him Mohammed Bin Ladin? Probably thought that was too sublte.

Overall, I thought it was better, even with it's weaknesses than the prior two. The kid without parents who befriends a strange man in the garage (regardless of who he looks like) was stretching it. We never see the kids mother and strangely the lock and chain that was broken on the garage door is intact at the end of the movie. Hooking the kid up was sweet, but what do you think a parent would say?

It was nowhere near the brilliance of this:

You need to see the Swedish original, "Let the Right One In.'

Much better. The Swedish version is my favorite vampire movie.

This is ok, but pales next to the original.

Apocalypse Now & Apocalypse Now Redux. 4/5 I just wanted to see if it holds up over time, in my opinion it does very well, since it's not necessarily about the Vietnam war but human nature in war. And the scenery is very captivating. But watching both versions takes a while, geesh.

I just watch Redux now. It's is ageless. It could be any war.

Beautiful Boxer

Easily 4.5 out of 5 stars.
This is based on a true story about a boxer named Parinya.
Prinya wants desperately to be a woman, though he is born a

boy. But, his family is poor, and he is unable to realize his

dream until he discovers that he is talented at Maui Thai kickboxing.

So, he becomes a kickboxer to save up money to have the

operation he so desperately wants to become a woman.

It is a heart-wrenching, uplifting, and fascinating story. And, wonderfully

gives you a glimpse into the dicotomy in Thailand of a very strong

tolerance towards transexuals and homosexuals mixed with the

homophobia that exist due to very strong gender roles in the country.

Parinya experiences teasing, hearbreak, and hope. It's a movie

that is more triumphant than bleak, more uplifting than discouraging,

and ultimately more relatable than novel. Anyone can watch this

and feel drawn into it. I'm not exaggerating. It's one of the best movies

I have seen in years. It brought me to tears.

I write more about it here: http://prince.org/msg/100/397064

Her nickname is Nong Toom (Thais call themselves by nicknames).

This was so true. I fell asleep duriing the Avengers (it was very late each time I tried to watch it). So I had NO IDEA why Tony was freaking out like literally NO IDEA. And I was so mad because I have faithfully watched the other 2, so I should be completely filled in on the plot. NO ONE TOLD ME that the Avengers also doubles as Iron Man 2.5 sad So I have watched the Avengers finally, and I am going back to the theater to see IM3.

However, I do believe that "tesseract" is like my magical hypnosis word that makes me fall asleep. I kept hearing that word and nodding off...O.O Fortunately I survived the Avengers, and it was good. No I know! I cannot believe C.A. was going to let Tony DIE! WHAT A TOOL! He is going to have some serious trust issues in The Avengers 2 IMO.

Alps - 3/5 From the Dogtooth writers and director. This has much the same look and tone as that earlier movie, but it feels like a lesser film in most ways - less focused, and the unbelievable situation here is just not as interesting to me as the unbelievable situation in Dogtooth. Still worth a look for people who liked that earlier film (loved it myself).

This was so uplifting. Country music darling, southern Christian daughter, and just an all around sweet, sweet woman with the biggest heart, struggling to find her place in society as a gay woman within the confines of the white, fundamentalist Christian- Republican right wing environment that comprises most of the country music audience she serves. For me as a Christian chick, I was struck most by the biblical concepts of Love and Grace in this film. Chely Wright simply is love and grace. This woman ROCKS. But ultimately, this film isn't only about labels, on a larger scale it's about our collective and common sense of humanity, and the fears and longings which can hold us back from living, or can propel us into authentic life with meaning and purpose. See the movie, buy her music. heart

This is probably my first star star star star star/5 star movie rating on these threads rose

We watched "Argo" last night. My one-word review? "Arrrrrgggghhhhhh-O".

THIS was the best movie of 2012? OK, we all know "Expendables 2" was the Peoples Champion last year, and that's all that really counts, but still. How did THIS film win an Oscar? It wasn't any good!

It was a snooze-fest and I hate to say this, but it was because Ben Affleck cannot act. The terms "wooden" and "laconic" were created to describe Affleck onscreen. His entire range is "I'm looking at you and saying nothing". And I LIKE Ben Affleck. His speech after "Argo" somehow won an Oscar was epic. But the man simply cannot act.

The plot holes in this movie were not really all that much - probably because it was based on a true story. One part that cracked me up was when Affleck and his "crew" did the walk-through at the bazaar. Remember when he was telling the dude who approved his "location scouting" request that he wanted to look around? And the Iranian dude said sarcastically, "Ah yes. You want to see a bazaar, with snake charmers and magic carpets"?

Well - THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID! I am pretty sure they didn't mean to be so ironic but I guarantee you that hipsters everywhere lifted a toast with whatever hipsters drink in homage to the sweet irony. And think about it - Affleck was allegedly shooting a SPACE movie, and the cartoons clearly showed that the action was to take place in a barren landscape. So why didn't Affleck's crew go to the mountains for their location preview? What part of a FUTURISTIC SPACE MOVIE could possibly be shot in a modern-day Iranian bazaar?

The casting was OK. Clearly and obviously, the best cast members were John Goodman and Alan Arkin, and the dad from "Malcolm in the Middle". But those guys are true pros and would shine in any movie. Heck, they'd even look good in a horrid train wreck like "War Horse". Oh yeah, the guy that played the Canadian ambassador was awesome as usual. That guy is one of my favorite character actors. I really should learn what his name is.

But the rest of the cast? Z.O.M.G. what a bunch of nerds. The only one I liked was the guy they made the director, but even that guy was just OK.

The music sucked. I was a man of 21 in 1980, and I surely remember there was much, much better music that what they played. Hey, and check this out - if you're at the Canadian embassy, are you going to find BRITISH ROCK BAND records there? Of course not! The record cabinet is going to be stocked with Rush, Bryan Adams and Ann Murray! You want Led Zeppelin? Too bad, you should have hid out at the British embassy!

Also, we have to blame "Mad Men" at this point, and you can figure out why. As I said, I was 21 in 1980 and while yeah, some people smoked (there were losers back then, too), it wasn't like EVERYONE WAS A LOSER AND SMOKED. Clearly Affleck watched "Mad Men" and said, "Hey - no matter what Rodeo says about smoking being only for losers, look at how many people smoke on this show! And it's trendy to like it! So I'm going to call my pals at Big Tobacco and tell them what a deal I have for them! EVERYONE in my movie is going to smoke, and smoke a lot! I'm even going to make the dad from "Malcolm in the Middle" take a few puffs at the end of the movie!" Ugh. What a stupid decision.

OK, back to more reasons why this movie doesn't make a hair on the bum of "Expendables 2".

The phrase "Ar-Go-F***-Yourself" was funny - once. And only when Alan Arkin said it. After that, it was played out.

The CIA was portrayed as a bunch of losers, which I am SURE is not the case in real life. What a bunch of dorks! Pretty much every nerd cliche was on display. Boo! And do you REALLY expect me to believe that when you drop off your documents after a clandestine operation, you can SNEAK OUT SOME STUFF?!? With an armed guard standing RIGHT BEHIND YOU? Pssshhhhh!

OMG, one part that I am sure also had the hipsters of America howling with ironic laughter was when the Iranian housekeeper from the Canadian embassy fled to.....wait for it.....you're going to die laughing......yes, they really went there.....she presented her papers to the border guard who said......."Welcome to Iraq". ROTFL, I was SO disappointed when they rolled the credits and gave the updates on everyone, that there wasn't one her that said something like "Sahar was eventually gassed by the Kurds; at least, that's what we told everyone so that we could invade Iraq in 2003" or "Sahar went on to become a peasant farmer, or as George W. Bush would put it - she hid WMDs in her petunia patch". C'mon Affleck - you missed a golden opportunity!

I am now going to watch "Expendables 2" again so as to once again place in the front of my brain images of real action stars doing something besides standing there, looking wooden and laconic.

I give "Arrrrrrrggggghhhh-O" 1.5247 Laconic Wooden Indians out of a possible 6.2347 Laconic Wooden Indians.

A man, wearing a white jacket with a gun on his back, walks through a destroyed bridge. The tagline "Earth is a memory worth fighting for" appears on the top while Tom Cruise's name, the title of the film, the rating and the rest of the credits appears on the bottom.

Oblivion 3.7/5 I liked it. I'm not sure if reading the spoiler beforehand made it too predictable or if a hunk of the storyline would have been obvious anyway. I haven't seen Independance Day in a long time but the "ship" reminded me of it. Overall I liked the concept. I do have a question about all the others. There has to be more on Earth, there's a lot of oceans and a few would eventually make their way to the cabin, that would be interesting.

Iron Man 3 theatrical poster.jpg

Iron Man 3 4/5 First! Don Cheadle, he wasn't in it much and not like expected but he was very, very, very NICE. I was distracted there for a minute. Loved the whole dragon idea, I wonder is that going to be a theme this year. The whole damsel in distress was gettin' on my last nerves since movies have moved away from that, so I was expecting the set up but I wasn't all that thrilled, it took too long. I thought the kid was cute, it let the kids in the audience feel like they have a part in the whole thing. Now I'm ready for Sherlock Holmes 3. I'm curious does RDJ have OCD cause both characters manifest versions of it, I'm just wondering are the writers taking queues from him.

.

TheGreatGatsby2012Poster.jpg

The Great Gatsby 3.5/5 It was very animated. Especially in the beginning, I was feeling I wasn't in the targeted generation to be able to really enjoy this movie, it had me scratching my head a lot. Then it seem to settle down and I was able to get into the story I read so many years ago. I enjoyed it, eventually.
