Rebelle / War Witch (2012) - Somewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa, Komona a 14-year-old girl tells her unborn child growing inside her the story of her life since she has been at war. Everything started when she was abducted by the rebel army at the age of 12.

Worthy Canadian entry in this year's Academy Awards' best foreign language film category. Very sad story. star star star star (out of five)

OLBIVION

I give it 3.5 Kanye stumps out of 5. It was ok. The visuals were great, but I think at this point in time, you just expect them to be. The acting was good, and the story was ok. It was just..sort of recycled. Had this been released before Matrix, perhaps I would have been more moved by the story.

It was nowhere near the brilliance of this:

Klown - I guess this is the next step in uncomfortable raunch comedy. I lol'd more than I squirmed, so I give it a 3.5

I saw "oz the Great and Powerful", last month. It is a great movie. The cast include: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz.

7/10, maybe 6.5. Tom Hardy is always great.

I just saw Upstream Color. I have no idea how to score it. I loved the acting, and the cinematography is vivid and beautiful. The storytelling is original, but it's also completely baffling, so I have to issue demerits for that. 2.5/5

Ginger & Rosa (2012) - A look at the lives of two teenage girls - inseparable friends Ginger and Rosa -- growing up in 1960s London as the Cuban Missile Crisis looms, and the pivotal event that comes to redefine their relationship.

A bit heavy handed at times. And what is up with all the Americans cast as Brits? star star star

From Up on Poppy Hill (2011) - A group of Yokohama teens look to save their school's clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

This was the first Studio Ghibli release I've seen in a very long time without any supernatural elements. And the first I've watched with the original Japanese language audio--which really adds to its appeal so shame on me for not doing so with the earlier Ghibli films. star star star star

Shotgun Stories - 4/5 Same writer/director and lead actor that produced Take Shelter. Definitely worth a look for those that loved that movie, though I did think the first 1/2 of this film droned on a bit.

From the IMDB plot synopsis:

"In a backward post-apocalyptic world, She aids two brothers' quest to rescue their kidnapped sister. Along the way, they battle orgiastic werewolves, a psychic communist, a tutu-wearing giant, a mad scientist, and gladiators before standing against the odds to defeat the evil Norks."

mostly entertaining. 3.5/5

Blancanieves (2012) - A twist on the Snow White fairy tale that is set in 1920s Seville and centered on a female bullfighter.

Some of it was a little absurd--which I suppose should be expected when translating a fairy tale, but I did love the visuals. star star star star

Threw myself into this one online only because I've loved Streisand since I was 6 years old.

I get the Streisand wanting to use her film vehicles for the psycological analysis of relationships angle, but unlike that somethin' special which drew you into her characters in "Up the Sandbox", "Nuts", "Prince of Tides" or even more comedic outings like her appearances in the Fockers series.

Guilt Trip felt clunky like a Neil Simon play that they tried to put to screen, which never really works.

star star 1/2/5 stars

watch it only if you adore Streisand till the end all of be all and a hardcore fan...particularly because this is the first decent hair and make-team they've had for one of her films in years, since The Mirror Has Two Faces (but then, she directed herself in that and knows what works for herself)---and it's nice to see La Streisand with great modern hair and a decent lip color for a change..even if only for a few film scenes....they actually gave Homegirl visible highlights and put a little bounce into her famous bob haircut...it only lasts for 6 minutes though... lol

Days of Heaven - 3.5/5 2nd time I've watched it, & left feeling much the same as the first - lots to admire in it, loads of pretty images, but I never really felt engaged and was actually pretty bored and tired by the end.

Apocalypse Now & Apocalypse Now Redux. 4/5 I just wanted to see if it holds up over time, in my opinion it does very well, since it's not necessarily about the Vietnam war but human nature in war. And the scenery is very captivating. But watching both versions takes a while, geesh.

The French added a lot to the story. But there's so much nudity now in movies sometimes I barely notice unless it's something particularly interesting to me which I didn't see anything that interesting in this case.

Back to School w/Rodney Dangerfield He was so funny to me way back when. Still give it a 3.5/5 it gave me a couple of laughs. RDJ was not cute cute way back when still witty, who knew his issues then.

Young Adam (2003) - A young drifter working on a river barge disrupts his employers' lives while hiding the fact that he knows more about a dead woman found in the river than he admits.

Dark and downbeat both visually and thematically. And Tilda Swinton is awesome as usual. star star star 1/2

I gave this movie the same rating. The hairdresser had a lot of patience handling that boy.

There were a few points where you want to strangle him, really. I'd say that was the biggest strength of the movie - that it didn't shy away from making it really, really hard to keep any kind of sympathy for that kid.

The Beguiled - 4/5

I watched Lincoln a few days ago. The acting was superb by all! I enjoyed the movie, but it was a tad too political for me.

42 (2013) - The life story of Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey.

It looked like a TV movie. The acting was fine, but the style of the film was very conservative--which may be appropriate considering the subject matter. I just prefer movies that push the envelope more. star star 1/2
