Elementary school shooting reported in Newtown, Conn.

Connecticut State Police say they and local police responded to a Friday morning shooting at Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The Hartford Courant was reporting that shortly after 9:40 a.m., one shooter was reported in the main office of the elementary school and one victim had numerous gunshot wounds Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals. But details were sketchy. The Newtown Bee reported that a police officer carried a seriously wounded child from the building. (The Courant also said one shooter was reported dead).

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers. Some students were still in the school at 10:30 a.m., after it was placed on lock down, parents said.

The school is in a residential, wooded neighborhood about 90 minutes north of New York City. It has has 39 teachers and about 650 students. A reverse 911 call went out to parents warning of an incident. Parents were being reunited with children. But, NBC Connecticut reported, police are searching the area behind the school with guns drawn.

Dozens of state troopers are on the scene assisting local police. Heavily armed police gathered in front of the school around 10:45 a.m., and a number of stretchers were set up.

The school superintendent's office says the district has locked down schools as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students and staff. State police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance says they have a number of personnel on the scene to assist.

A 1:30 press conference has been scheduled.

The Hartford Courant is reporting multiple injuries, one teacher shot in the foot, one shooter is dead, two handguns found at the scene.

Very scary indeed, I too have a third grader and I cannot imagine getting the call that there was a shooting at the school.

I am seeing the same on CBS, 18. Terrible all around.

Who is this shooter? Did some random shooter just stroll in the school and start shooting?

Or was it a child/ren shooting.... or a disgruntled administrator/teacher/support staff???

I agree there needs to be dicussion. But criminals like this pay no attention to laws.

one the reports i heard was the shooter apparently had arguments with some staff there.

Ok... so breaking news report (NBC newscast) is reporting 27 dead- 18 are children, including the shooter who was a 20 year old man found in one of the classrooms.

among the dead are the principal (sp?) and the school psychologist. One can only speculate that they must have tried to talk the shooter down.

Gunman killed his parents first.

The shooter allegedly had 4 guns and was wearing a bullet proof vest. The shooter at the mall in Oregon was wearing a bullet proof vest, so was the shooter at the movie theater in Colorado.

I really cannot understand why these cowards have been wearing the vests?

His mother was a teacher at the school, several of her students were victims.

He's 24 he shot and killed his father in NJ drove up to CT and went to Sandy Hook where his mother works is being reported now.

He went to his mother Kindergarten class and opened fire killing his mother and students

I just really can't take it with the media trying to get these babies to give them interviews, outside of the school.
