Death threat prompts police response to Newtown church on Sunday

The Lookout - 2 hrs ago

[Updated at 2:40 p.m. ET]

NEWTOWN, Conn.--St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church was evacuated during its noon mass on Sunday due to an anonymous threat made by phone.

A spokesman for the church told Yahoo News that an unidentified male called the rectory, threatening to "kill everyone."

"My friend didn't finish the job," the caller said, according to the church official.

The church alerted state police, who said it was a credible enough threat and ordered the church be evacuated, the spokesman said.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., Monsignor Robert Weiss interrupted a younger priest, "calmly told the parishoners there was a threat," and led the evacuation of approximately 500 people, he said.to

Heavily-armed patrolmen and SWAT team members surrounded the church with weapons drawn.

Police formed a perimeter around the church and several adjacent buildings, including an empty education center. The media, which had been barred from attending the mass at St. Rose but were camped out across the street, swarmed to capture footage of the chaotic scene.

Approximately a dozen police and SWAT officers surrounded a white building just west of the church, taking cover behind trees with guns drawn.

A Newtown police officer declared the scene was "clear" at approximately 1:15 p.m., but declined to answer any questions about the threat. At 2 p.m., a Humvee carrying the tactical unit left the church parking lot.

The Newtown Police Department headquarters also declined to comment on why officers rushed to the church.

"No, we don't have any information on that," a hurried police dispatcher told Yahoo News.

At least 10 of the 20 children killed during Friday's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School were parishoners at St. Rose, the church spokesman said, adding that funerals for eight of the children are scheduled to be held there.

It's the second threat in as many days for St. Rose,
according the Washington Post . On Saturday, the church displayed posters for parishioners to express their grief. However, an unknown prankster wrote, "This is just round one," on one of them, the pastor said.

By 2:30 p.m., the church had closed its doors and cancelled their evening mass.Comments (2421) Comments (2421)

its for Santa ~ yes u can look

near the window you will see a drawing 4 u

yes, it’s from me

u can have it but it’s not quite done

there was no time to draw the sun

today you would have been so proud of me

in my spelling I got a B

and I read my words loud and clear

so all my friends could easily hear

my teacher said I was clever

how i wish today would last 4ever

something bad happened then

so i closed my eyes and counted to 10

i saw nothing for a while

and held onto your comforting smile

there’s so much i want to say

i just can’t ~ but anyway

being in that situation, in that moment, is terrifying. but there is no rational reason to feel that the fact that guns are legal shouldn't be. The overwhelming portion of all guns and all guns owners and all gun users never use one against an innocent person.

a few weeks ago I bought a steak knife set from Myer and I had to show id

I did not have a problem in doing so....... and I am glad we have these laws here to protect us and our children

the problem in the USA is that any one can own a gun and guns are way too easily accessible ~ why do they sell guns in department stores? why is it that the USA has so many attacks like thishappening?? Why do innocent people have to die because citizens of the USA believe its their God given right to own guns??

its just so very sad all those adults and children should all still be alive ~ all of them

i just cant stop thinking about this tragedy...... so very very sad.......it breaks my heart :blove:

I want to disgree... but I can not. There is no reason for that mother to buy an adapted assault rifle that fires 48 rounds per minute. I mean really, what scenario can you really be preparing for?

Still, I really should not speak ill of the murderers mother... for all I know, she may have tried to stop his attack.

She was shot 5 times in the face, she may have found out about his plot and told him that the only way he would leave was to get through her... and this is what may have happened.

Its a horrible situation, but one that would not have had the same conscequences if a high powered rifle was not involved.

That riflle was illegal before they changed one feature on that rifle making it available for sale... that rifle is illegal in MA... little comfort us though because one can easily buy one in Conneticut, a neighboring state.

sad

hmmm OK, I understand the "collecting" part, many gun enthusiasts like having guns just to have them.... in a safe display case.

For hunting? What those hogzillas... a hoard of rabid bison... Leviathan himself?

Protection? From what? A village of people with torches and pitchforks... vombies (vampire zombies).... seriously??

Defense? From who? Expecting a squadron of Navy Seals to storm through your front door anytime soon? Really?

Entertainment? .... now that's just scary! eek

As much as I would love to criticize you cause I'm a female but I do think you have a point. I don't believe this guy ever had a girlfriend/boyfriend. If he was getting laid on a regular basis no way this would've happen. I hate to admit it, it always come down to sex.

there's no need to crticize. The damage has been done.No sentimentality is gonna brick them back.I cried when i heard the news, but it's over.

We all wanna be loved and fucked. No one wants to be alone, alienated.isolated from the world. When you are alone, have some mental issues and access to guns.Things like this can happen.

If a model or bangbros chick was fucking him everyday,or any girl.I bet he feel alot better about himself.

No, you don't... black youth and latino youth usually join gangs and terrorize each other

and everyone who lives in our communities. neutral

The opinion you expressed, (the mindset) is part of the problem. We get caught up in the USA about what this group is or isn't or what this group is naturally prone to do or isn't prone to do. When I say, "we" I mean me as well.

"Violence is as American as apple pie," to quote H.Rap Brown.

Therein lies the problem, the United States has always been a violent nation, we have just gone from bad, to worst, to catastrophic. Our government with the support of many of its citizens have condone and supported killing in one shape or form since this nation birth. We condone, make excuses, and/or support violence based on class, gender, geography, gender, race, and sexual orientation. We have in the past and we still do in the present. Most of the murders in our nation are committed by boys/men, men collectively keep all of use off the streets and wary. When you expose or teach hatred/violence, (violence is a learned behavior) it never stays contained or confined in its own separate space, it bleeds which means it will spread and it will touch many who never thought it would.

The President spoke about changing a mindset, we could no longer go on as we have been. I wouldn't hold my breath for such a change. Children are still more likely to be killed by their parent(s), a family member, or the significant other of a parent. The boogieman isn't some stranger outside of the home they reside in the home. We name and treat the violence committed against women differently just because she happen to fuck the man who killed her. Why? Black/Brown men and or black/brown youth are killed in this country under the justification... they look like they may be up to no good. Why? We have parents who know their children are no good, who've killed, have the potential to kill, and never pick up the phone to turn them in. Why? We are usually indifferent to violence or killing of others unless it crosses racial and/or class lines. Why? We are prone to label some groups with having obvious psychology problems but deem other groups as being pathologically violent. Why? We claim the violence being committed is by a small fraction of the population yet they hold ( if you are to believe that opinion) the rest of use hostage. Why? Who are we protecting through our silence and inaction?

Until we are willing an able to have an honest discourse on why the US is so violent and admit or mindset is part of the problem, these types of massacres shall continue.

I am referring to the assault rifles only.

I am not against owning a handgun, its just that I do not see a true need for someone to own that type of fire power. Might as well allow folks to buy missles and grenandes too.

It is scary when a person says they NEED an assault rifle for entertainment. Why not just borrow one to use at a shooting range? I do not think any good can come from keeping such a high powered weapon in any home for private use.... but that's just my opinion.

Family of Newtown victim Noah Pozner says it's going after 'despicable' scam artists trying to profit off tragedy

'These scammers are taking away from families and the spirits of dead kids,' said Alexis Haller, Noah's uncle. He alerted the FBI after finding an instance where someone started a website in his nephew's name and was trying to collect donations for herself.

This is the only official website for payment to directly and solely benefit the siblings of Noah Pozner, killed in Friday's Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

They're getting victimized again.

Even in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn., scam artists have found ways to exploit people’s generosity and hurt the loved ones of those killed.

The family of 6-year-old Noah Pozner, one of 26 murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday, learned that firsthand when they discovered someone they didn’t know was trying to collect donations on their behalf. The website created even used Noah’s name in the address.

The boy’s uncle, Alexis Haller, was so infuriated he asked police to find “these despicable people,” he told The Associated Press.

“These scammers,” he said, “are taking away from families and the spirits of dead kids.”

A photo provided by the family of Noah Pozner shows the smiling 6-year-old one month before he was tragically killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The sick scam was revealed when a family friend received an email about donating, even giving details about Noah’s funeral and the Pozner family. It told donors to send money to an address in the Bronx and listed a New York City phone number to text any questions.

Victoria Haller, Noah’s aunt, emailed the person who had originally registered the name. The person, who went by the name Jason Martin, wrote back that he’d meant “to somehow honor Noah and help promote a safer gun culture. I had no ill intentions I assure you.”

CNN host Anderson Cooper also sent a team to the Bronx address, and they said they confronted a woman named Noel Alba, who claimed someone else may have been trying to set her up. She reportedly received $300, but claimed to have returned the money.

Alexis Haller told Cooper that he contacted the FBI about the scam. The FBI didn't immediately return a request for comment.

“I’m going to do everything I can to protect them (other families) and get the word out,” Haller said.

The family has since taken back the domain name and has set up a legitimate site at NoahPozner.org.

the answers are the same... I do not see what is scary about saying you "Need" one. It may not be accurate but it is not scary. What is scary is that a growing number of people are getting behind the idea that WE need a reason to have one.

But then again: where did I say anyone NEEDED one for entertainment? I think I said they provided entertainment. Shooting is fun for many people. Personally I have had my fill (just like I doubt I would go to another Prince concert) but I am not going to begrudge those that like it.
