That's when I go to bed when left to my own devices. But I need 8-9 hours of sleep so it makes things awkward when I wake up late and clients have been calling. lol

I rarely jump into a thread that already has so many replies, but I'll make an exception:



First off, good on ya! Meditation is supposed to be great for you (Howard Stern is a big advocate of TM). Re: "No more rush rush", a famous Zen monk once said, "Smile, breathe and go slowly" and I am a big believer in that! As for my morning routine:



I have an alarm set for half-an-hour before I have to get up (the gentle strains of the iPhone's "Harp" alert); I look at it as the equivalent of hitting a 30-minute "snooze" button. The next alarm's the intro of Madonna's Borderline (gentle, morning-esque glockenspiel).



Before I leave, I grab my Sirius Stiletto 2 (which has been recording that morning's Howard Stern Show since 6am). When I get in the car, I switch on the show, live (it generally goes until about 10:00 (not including The Wrap Up Show).



When I get to the office, I try to have a 12-grain bagel with Becel Pro-Activ and O.J. and I take a cardio vitamin. Then it's off to the races.



I leave for lunch at 11:45 (to beat the rush) and listen to the beginning of Howard while I'm eating. cloud9



I wake up to the iphone Harp alert too. :lol:

It sounds like Howard Stern is a big part of your life! But I like the ritual sound of it, that it's the same thing day after day. :)

Yes, I have meditated every day for the last couple of weeks (and did it for years a long time ago). I love meditation. I swear, that paired with daily exercise in the morning, is greatly improving my physical and mental well being in general.

I'm absolutely very content with my routine and general lifestyle. I've received my share of funny looks after telling people what time I wake up and what I do with my mornings, but I've always been an early riser and I really like taking that time to go through that routine, getting some exercise and some time with the paper and taking a 1/2 hr with a book. I could do all that at the end of the day, but the morning is when I think I'm at my best and I like to keep some of that peak mental time for myself rather than give it all to work.




THAT is exactly why I am so interested in this morning routine biz. It's about determining your life the way YOU want to live it, not reacting to external structure. I am so tired of work sapping all the critical energy. I became self-employed this year, so it's an opportunity for me to rewrite my life, so to speak. For which I am grateful.


Actually the one thing that really pops out at me in this thread is how many people have stated they hit the snooze button a few times, or need an alarm clock to wake up. I almost always wake up 5-10 minutes before my alarm sounds - often I'm out of the shower before it goes off. I'm kind of curious (perhaps this is a separate topic) how many people actually rely on their alarm to get up.



Yes. Despite my efforts, and without a strict morning schedule, I struggle with getting out of bed. I never want to, even if I have gotten plenty of sleep. I'd much rather float around in dream state, and there's always a certain uncomfortableness around facing a new day. I do my best to avoid waking up as long as possible. Not sure why. And this bothers me.

on the days my husband works and my son goes to school, i get up at 6 a.m.. steam iron my husband's work clothes, make my husband & son's lunches. make breakfast for my son, and coffee for my husband. wake up my husband at 6:35 a.m., wake up my son at 7 a.m. make sure my son gets ready for school.....then walk my son to school, then i go back home.... biggrin

The show makes me laugh and laughter is (of course) a great thing. But they also get into philosophical and psychological discussions and I just totally dig that.

* 7 a.m. - Assuming I have no morning meeting or event scheduled, I'll set my alarm for this time. (I awaken naturally, however, about 10 minutes earlier, and I'll either read or remain relaxed in bed for the few extra minutes.)

* 7:15ish - Leave the house after feeding the cat, brushing my teeth, doing a freshen up (I take a full-on bath or shower the night before), dressing, and kissing my wife and kid.

* 7:30ish - A pitstop at Starbucks or Tim Horton's for breakfast.

* 7:40ish - Arrive at work, do any necessary tidying/feed the fish and frog in my office aquarium, shoot the breeze a bit with colleagues

* 8 a.m. -- Work day begins

Unfortunately I do have one. I sleep too late and race to make coffee, shower, and get out the door.

If I became an early riser, I have no doubt it would change my life significantly, because I have ALWAYS had this aforementioned routine

thumbs up! Ya know, for all of my love of Zen philosophy, I have never formally meditated. I meditate in my own ways, but I've never learned how to do the real thing. Did you take a course?

I lived in a spiritual center/ashram for ten years which is kind of a course. lol I went on many retreats with a teacher who taught us different methods. I have read books, listened to many Swamis on the topic. Most of all, I have meditated with others - beginning practitioners as well as advanced. I think the experience of meditating with others, including highly evolved spiritual beings, has been my greatest teacher.

In general, I try to not think of it in terms of rules. But to simply be, without rules. To witness. Watch the mind and emotion, then you naturally fall into a state of meditation.

lol Me too. I have always either raced around to get out the door or been super lazy if I didn't have to.

I am wondering if it's possible to change such deep engrained methods. To reformulate, to shift away from the old and to start something new...

My weekday routine:

5:55am Get up

5:56am bathroom break

6:00am Put on work out clothes

6:05am turn on TV to Top40 music station (M/W/F) or 90s station (T/Th)

6:06am 30 min of exercise - stationary bike (M/W/F) or sit ups/weights/etc (T/Th)

6:36am stretch

6:37am take pills

6:38am take off sneakers

6:39am switch tv to news for bf to watch

6:40am move computer to kitchen table

6:41am fix breakfast - vanilla greek yogurt, fruit & Kashi Go Lean and fruit juice

6:43am eat & look at news & weather online

6:47am kiss bf goodbye

6:53am finish breakfast

6:55am take off work out clothes

6:57am bathroom break

7:00am shower (shampoo, shave right leg, rinse, conditioner, shave left leg, rinse, shave other parts, body wash, rinse, face wash, rinse, baby oil)

7:17am dry off, qtips, deodorant, wrap up in bathrobe

7:20am put water on for tea

7:22am stand in closet and pick out clothes to wear

7:27am pour water for tea

7:28am comb hair

7:30am get dressed

7:36am put on jewelry

7:40am brush teeth & mouthwash

7:43am put on makeup

7:50am lie on the bed for 10 min listening to the radio

8:00am put on shoes

8:01am add honey and lemon to tea

8:02am pack up bag for work (lunch, book, etc)

8:04am take trash/recycling out (Mon/Fri)

8:05am Get in the car

8:23am Arrive at work

Why did my routine change today?

Because three days ago..........my daughter got her drivers license! Now I don't have to drive her to school any more!

I do believe it's possible, just a matter of will power. But that doesn't make it any easier for me!

The trouble is, I subscribe to the belief that it's really important to do certain things first thing in the morning in order to get your mind working on them throughout the day. So I feel like I am missing out on a great opportunity to nurture my creative side every morning confused

I used to until my work started enforcing mandatory overtime. I don't have time to do shit and I refuse to get up any earlier than 6 am.

I used to take a half an hour before my work day started to catch up on emails, social networks and have a bite to eat. I miss it terribly. sad

Alarm at 7am - hit snooze
Second alarm at 7.09 - hit snooze
Third alarm at 7.18 - drag self out if bed
Nicely wake kids up
Get kids dressed and give breakfast and tell them to eat
Have a shower
Yell at kids to eat their breakfast
Get dressed
Yell at kids to eat breakfast
Make and eat my breakfast, while encouraging kids to eat theirs
Brush teeth and make up
Get kids to brush teeth, wash face and do their hair
Approx 8.15 get kids into car for school and off to work for me
Do try to get to bed/ sleep before midnight, but very rarely happens, really want to get up earlier for walking but it has yet to happen.

Someone told me today that it takes 20 days to make a new habit. It's been about two weeks for me. I am getting the activities down, but not the timing. Still getting up at haphazard times and going to bed really late. But I'm determined to do this! all hail damosuzuki! lol

I woke up before 7 and opened my curtains since it was going to be such a beautiful day and me and the kids had plenty of time to get ready, play outside a bit and then walk with the dogs to school. When I came back I had my breakfast on the front porch since it was still cool out.

Honestly, no. I haven't had one for a long time, even when I have a job that requires me to be someplace early. What I do in the morning depends 100% on what I did the night before, and what time I got to sleep (which is sometimes not long before I have to wake up).

If I drank coffee, that sounds like a great trick!! I need something attractive to pull me out of the bed. Maybe someONE attractive. Haha

You know, I use a coffee press because it's smaller and has fewer parts to clean, but I think you may be on to something. When I am at my girlfriend's and I hear the coffee grinder I get right up like the dog that I am!
