Hurricane Sandy's effects on Orgers

Hello fellow Orgers,

I am fortunate to be unaffected by Hurricane Sandy but I know there are some of you that are not. I want to offer you this thread as a place to let us know you're well and share your experiences.

I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say "We hope you're doing OK!"

I am on the east coast and on the ocean shore and was very blessed NOT to have any flooding or property or power loss, I know many others were not so lucky.

Stillgotit had powerlines fall al over her home and her power comes and goes and she has been scared because power surges are happening since they re-wired the downed powerlines.

I am worried because she is at great risk of an electical fire, and appliance burnout. Keep her in your prayers and thoughts.

Puple Jedi as of now may still be without power, haven't heard from Chocolate1 and I am really worried, people in her area got SLAMMED by Sandy. sad

pray I hope everyone is OK and there homes are intact.

Hey guys. I'm here. We haven't had power since Monday evening in my town. It was so strange to drive last night with everything in complete darkness. It may take a week or more before we have power again. It seems like all the transformers blew up one after the other in the area. There is a substation very close to my house and a huge tree fell over into it 'causing a big explosion. It scared the crap out of me. I've honestly never seen anything like this here. A lot of homes and businesses were destroyed. Some are under water a few blocks from me.

I've texted with Chocolate1. She and her family are fine, but she is without power and heat.

Where I am (Harlem), the storm was not bad. It was windy that day, of course, but hardly all that fierce, and even the rain in my neighborhood seemed light to me. Once the storm made landfall, the wind and rain pretty much stopped. I feel very lucky, but I'm very sad for the others around the area who were so devastated by this.

I'm in the Upper West Side and was very fortunate to not even lose power. My neighborhood was poppin' yesterday with people from lower Manhattan coming up to stay with friends, eat, get groceries. My office is in midtown -- I took a crosstown bus to the east side today since the subways aren't running and the traffic on Fifth Avenue was crawling. I took one look at that, another look at the 25-30 people waiting for the bus I needed, and decided to walk the rest of the way to work - 30 blocks (about 1 1/2 miles). I made it in about 30 minutes and didn't once see a bus pass me.

My boss and I are the only two people here. She lives in the West Village and has no power. It took her 45 minutes to walk to the office. One of my other co-workers who also lives on the UWS (but closer to work than me) sent me some email talking 'bout "I know your internet may be spotty; this co-worker is trapped, that co-worker blah blah blah... So "we've" decided it doesn't make sense to come to work." And asking me did I have the number for the building management to see if our office building was okay.

I replied, " [The boss] and I are here - at the office. The building is fine."

rolleyes

My co-worker who's in Long Island with no power and no LIRR, I get no being able to come to work. This jackass lives a 30 minute walk away and is not in a position to make decisions to close the office.

Hoping all our other NYC/NJ orgers are okay!

Not many of you know me but I've been on the ORG for a few yrs and am from North NJ near Newark. My street was without power for 5 hrs but no flooding, some parts of town still without power. I work in a neighboring school district which is closed all week. I may venture out to see if the Shoprite is open. I cannot believe the devastation at the NJ shore, I have gone there every summer since I was little and this is a great loss.

Hellooo... wave

We had Sandy down here last Thursday. We had quite a bit of rain and wind but I only lost power for about a half hour. There was a bit of flooding at the beaches but nothing major. It was much worse in the caribbean, particularly Haiti.

My family in Philly is okay and my cousins in West VA. are enduring that blizzard, but doing alright so far.

Glad you're okay Painted.

Glad to hear so many are safe. I'm in Suffolk County on Long Island and we didn't get hit as hard. After losing power for 3 hours, the lights came back on and have stayed on.

My sympathy to all those who lost their homes and/or possessions and especially to those who lost their loved ones. Seeing the amount of devastation that Sandy left is mind-blowing to me. Watching the news now has me remembering the terrible scenes of what Hurricanes Katrina and Rita did to my home state, Louisiana, back in 2005. cry

Rita destroyed my hometown less than a month after Katrina erased most of the Gulf Coast. I never would have thought Sandy would have been this bad because it was a Category 1 and Katrina and Rita were Category 5s. Very scary how much damage Sandy managed to do. I do respect how all the local governments in NY, NJ, and CT have been so conscientious of the well-being of their citizens but will say I share in their disappointment that people didn't evacuate when they were told to do so. Being born and raised in Louisiana and living in Florida for years where hurricanes are expected, if someone tells you to evacuate; you need to evacuate. Material things can be replaced; lives cannot. Mother Nature doesn't play favorites. If you're in her way, she will mow you down. sad

COPYING FROM OTHER THREAD...

Thank you all who've been sending words of kindness to all of us delaing with this mess.

Fortunately for many of us it's a mere inconvenience (so far).

I know that many people lost their homes completely (and if I was still in Freeport, I would probably be one of those right now) and still others who lost loved ones. My heart goes out to THEM.

As for me;

- grilling in the backyard

- making runs to DD for coffee & donuts at all hours

- hit the gym early this morning to have a hot shower

- coming to work to check the internet & recharge my electronics (oh, and occassionally do some work)

Yesterday was trying with the kids. I drove around a five mile radius around my home looking for a place to take the kids trick-or-treating. The area looks like a war zone. It's hard to describe the AMOUNT of downed trees. I wound up driving out to Suffolk County to trick-or-treat in my friends' neighborhood (barely affected by storm) and the kids had a great time.

AND we capped the evening with dinner at Friendly's, so Halloween was saved.

RIGHT NOW the most troubling matter seems to be gasoline. I'm running on half a tank right now and al the gas stations are shutting down (running dry). I may have to drive out to Suffolk County to find an open gas station later today.

I'm not even fretting about the old house. shrug That's what insurance is for. I just pray the buyers don't change their mind. beg

hug That was heartbreaking. I went to New Orleans 2 years ago and they were still rebuilding and it had been 5 years since Katrina by that point. Restoration is gonna take time and I hope everyone bands together and understands that stoic patience is the most important tool in the rebuilding process.
