I try to stay away from reading reviews before I watch movies because often too much is given away.

For Drive I knew the general critical concensus was favorable and I like both Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan so that was why I saw it. I was surprised at how tense and violent it was and didn't think it was boring at all.

I will admit that a big part of the appeal of Shame for me was the NYC setting and Michael Fassbender's character going to the same haunts I do (like the Standard Hotel bar).

I give both films four stars.

When I saw it after hearing about it, i was disappointed. I couldn't see what generated the hype.

Last year for staff appreciation we took the office out for lunch and a movie, and we went to see Drive. I thought it was fantastic (tense is the perfect word for it - I can't remember the last time I got so wound up over a film), but everyone else thought it was a snore, and a few people absolutely hated it. I'd like to see it again before giving it a hard rating, but based on my memory I'd give it at least a 4, probably more. The only drawback for me was that the lyrics from pop song used throughout the film (I think it was by college) were a bit too literal - I remember finding its use a touch irritating.

Stranger changes family for the better

Pirates: Band of Misfits 3.5/5

I watched a lot of movies since I last posted here.

Adam's Apples! Great comedy from Denmark. Simply weird and unusual! 4/5

Angels & Demons. Been wanting to watch this for a long time, but it totally pissed me off. Is this a good thing? 2/5

Kingdom of Heaven. Brilliant movie! It's over 2 hours, but very interesting. 4/5

Cruising. Al Pacino goes undercover in the sleazy underground gay subculture of New York City. Interesting movie. 4/5 - a classic I guess!

Great movie, I specially liked the neutral display of the two religions. The director is atheist, could be the reason why. It's obviously historically not accurate, but still good movie.

It's almost as good as Paul. I thought it was fun, but also rated 2,5. Jurassic Park for Kids!

Kill List 3/5

Some shocking violence and an ending that didn't make much sense to me. Apparently this is a big favourite among violence & gore-hounds, and it did have some very effective and very tough scenes in it. I could see people who enjoy Martyrs and films of that sort enjoying this, though I did think it was let down by its final scenes.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) - In 1968, a Czech doctor with an active sex life meets a woman who wants monogamy, and then the Soviet invasion further disrupts their lives.

It was wild seeing such a young Juliette Binoche, but at almost three hours long, I found it a bit tedious. There was already a strike against it because all the Czech characters were speaking to each other in English. That always annoys me in movies. star star 1/2

The Naked Kiss (1964)-4/5 stars

A former prostitute on the run tries to reinvent herself as a nurse for crippled children. She finds true love, but things turn out too good to be true. A nice piece of sleazy film noir directed by Sam Fuller. I hope to watch another Criterion Sam Fuller release, Shock Corridor.

Silly movie starring Rhys Darby and Sally Hawkins.
Nice to see a movie set in Auckland but the duck was annoying once novelty wore off.

Scott Pilgrim 3.5/5
Awesome to look at. Although the music the sex bomb ombs played hurt my aesthetic sensibilities dead

Cargo (2006) - a young guy gets in trouble while in Africa which leads him to sneak into a ship heading to Europe where he comes across bizarre incidents conducted by its crew.

despite leaving some major questions unanswered, I still found the film to be overall gripping, one of the few thrillers I've enjoyed in a while. the final minutes were particularly chilling. 4/5

2 Days in Paris (2007) - Marion and Jack try to rekindle their relationship with a visit to Paris, home of Marion's parents -- and several of her ex-boyfriends.

This movie is hilarious! I was never interested much in Julie Delpy before, but now I feel differently. heart star star star star

MINE - A powerful story about the essential bond between humans and animals, told against the backdrop of one of the worst disasters in U.S. history.

3 out of 5

Brother's Keeper - Documentary by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky details the murder trial of Delbert Ward. Delbert was a member of a family of four elderly brothers, working as semi-literate farmers and living together in isolation from the rest of society until William's death.

4 out of 5

Brick Lane - A young Bangladeshi woman, Nazneem, arrives in 1980s London, leaving behind her beloved sister and home, for an arranged marriage and a new life.

3.5 out of 5

Gandhi - Biography of Mohandas K. Gandhi, the lawyer who became the famed leader of the Indian revolts against the British rule through his philosophy of non-violent protest.

5 out of 5.

I CAN NOT believe I have never seen this movie until now.

Hunger Games 2.5/5

I knew this would not be great. I thought the beginning and end were pretty lame and hyperstylized in a lame kind of way. I did not really care about the characters or the love story, but I kind of enjoyed the chase.

Probably slightly better as a book.

The Unbearable Lengthness of Film

This turned out to be one of my favorite books, but man I could not sit through this thing, despite loving the two leads. That was years ago, now, I am curious if I would like it any more today hmmm

This movie was a little too hip for me, but I liked the music and the name "Knives Chao." And I appreciated the creativity, so I would give it a 4/5. I would have loved it when I was younger.
