Prometheus: The Art of the Film
Excitement is definitely building among science fiction fans for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, a high-concept sci-fi horror film from the director of Bladerunner and Alien. On June 5th Titan Books is publishing Prometheus: The Art of the Film, 192-page hardcover with a cover price of $39.95.
This movie began as a sort of “prequel” to the original Alien movie, but quickly morphed into something altogether more ambitious via a process that is detailed in this sumptuous volume.
The narrative DNA of the Alien movies is definitely present inPrometheus, but there is also a strain of high-concept narrative that touches on the most profound mysteries of life in a manner unseen in a major science fiction film since Stanley Kubrick’s 2001.

This is the movie I've been anticipating since Aliens.
I never considered Aliens to be an adequate sequal to Alien (sure, a great, fast paced thriller--but it answered NOTHING). And the other alien movies simply weren't that good.
To me, this is where I wanted future movies to move towards. I love the fact that they'll be in the same Universe but that this story is so much larger.
Simply put, this is the movie I've been waiting for this summer--no other ones.

RIdley must have A LOT of surprises up his sleeve, because I think he's revealed an awful lot about the movie in his TV spots and trailers.
I mean, we know it's about human engineering. We know it's about our origins. We know it's about the making of the alien.
We know the Prometheus crashes into the alien craft. We know there's an epic battle.
We can even get a real sense of who's going to be dying early on.
Yet, Scott always delivers surprises. It makes me curious what those may be.
I'm very glad he got his way and the movie ended up being rated R. This means, Scott will get a chance to scare the shit out of us.

Okay...so I'm super excited for this film, just from the stills alone, but I have never seen any of the Alien movies (as a kid, my brothers scared the shit out of me with an 'Alien' mask and I have never ventured there!).
Question...should I watch the originals first, or go in clueless? Im tempted to go in clueless then watch the others later, but is there something I need to see first? She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

The original Alien movie , which was also directed by Scott, isn't required viewing before seeing Prometheus; however, one of the series' most prominent alien species, the Space Jockeys, appear in the 1979 feature and Prometheus. That said, Scott insists Prometheus is not a prequel to the first movie.

i'm looking forward to this! only concern i have is the sets all look the same color, and it has that 'inside a coffee can' feel from the pics above.....

We all know the alien will not die, so what's the point? There's zero suspense.
I miss movies where evil died in the first movie. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Unfortunately, several prominent critics have given this lukewarm reviews, and some even negative.
Most, however, are liking it but admitting that it's no sci-fi 'classic' in the vein of Aliena nd Blade Runner. I wonder if this is due to how desensatized we are by provocative ideas, and how mush is really due to the fact that it isn't as good.
I won't get a chance to see it here in Asian until June 7th.

I can't look at any picture of Noomi Rapace staring blankly into the screen without thinking of that scene.
Edit: See! It even made me spell her name wrong.

I saw it last night. I'm not a Sci Fi fan at all but I did like Alien and Aliens, though I'm not someone who obsesses over that shit so I didn't have many expectations going in.
Probably Ridley Scott's best film since Matchstick Men - also note that that's pretty much the only film of his I've enjoyed since Thelma & Louise.
There are a few inconsistencies with it being a prequel to Alien but it works as a stand alone film. It didn't have the element of suspense though as the soundtrack never took a break. There needed to be more simple silence to create tension. Plus a lot of the secondary characters were merely cannon fodder for later rather than actual characters, but great central performances from Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron.

does anyone know if the Xenomorphs will appear?
because if they won't, then I'll consider this movie as a spin-off, not a proper "Alien" movie...more like a movie about the space-jockeys or something
and I don't like the "The search of our beginning could lear to our end" line, I've always thought that those sci-fi stories about the human race being created/breed by a superior alien race are just ridiculous
suddenly I feel a little underwhelmed

ok, I couldn't help it, since I had many doubts: I've read the plot's movie (Wikipedia), and now I can say two things:
semi-SPOILERS
-the movie will DISAPPOINT those who expected a DIRECT prequel of Alien, since I can't find a real link between Prometheus and Alien, other than the space jockey...
-I think the movie will be visually amazing, but the story is just a BIG FLAT MEH
now I can say that I'll wait until the DVD release

Anyone else feel like this is heavily inspired by Mass Effect?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
uh, indirectly, but I don't think Scott has even heard of Mass Effect
anyway, the space jockeys cannot hold a candle to the Reapers

I caught this thursday and it wowed me I was expecting it to be a let down just because I'd been anticipating this for over a year and my expectations were through the roof.
And then just the first 5 minutes rewards your waiting. Amazing. AMAZING shots. the nature the 'engineer' the special effects. just wow.
First film I've ever watched where the 3D was actually contributing to the film instead of just 'being there' or actually being a pain in the ass.
Some slight plotholes and general weirdness imo.
*START SPOILER*
For instance, as soon as they realise they can breathe the air in the underground structure, they all take off their helmets, whilst there is 'water' trickling down on them etc? And yet, when they reboard prometheus the cargo bay has to be decontaminated? wtf? lol.
The Engineers looked freaking fantastic. Fassbender was on point, as usual. He always brings it. Noomi was good, especially in the freak out scenes like during the 'operation'. I was just a little bit let down by Charlize Theron, but not due to her, more due to the fact that she had an awkward role and it should have had about 10 minutes more screentime to fill out her story, or her feeling/motivations a bit more.
*END SPOILER*
action and graphics were amazing.
I've actually seen it twice now. In different theatres. Thinking about going to see it a third time. I don't think I've ever done that before. Except with "There Will Be Blood". It's not that it's the best movie ever, far from it. But there's something about it that just makes me leave the theatre without a single negative thought in my head. Just sheer enjoyment and fun.
