No it's not. Trust me.

I used to suck my thumb all the time as a child and I don't know if that's the reason why, but my lower jaw seems further back than it should be. If I feel that anyone is studying me too closely, I just push it forward a little. That works alright.

I've only seen that one picture so i won't argue... but I'm sure you're wrong!

Yeah.. I post pictures. Unlike some people.

I would TOTALLY have plastic surgery if it weren't for the fact that I'm terrified of being put under. So I guess it's a good thing, or else I'd have my boobs done, my lips plumped up (don't have to be put under for that so maybe I'll do it later) and a full face lift once I hit my 60's or so. Probably a good thing I'm scared or else I'd end up looking like that Wildenstein woman (or whatever her name is!) eek

I agree with that! I like REAL teeth on people- can't stand those blinding white fake ass looking teefs some bougious people have. Looks ridiculous! You gotta keep you're real damn teeth and take care of them- I've always wondered what happens to the real teeth once their covered in veneers- their no longer being brushed- eekksss sounds so gross!

I once met a dentist in a bar - and told him I was thinking of getting my teeth done. (This was back when I was on TV, so it mattered.) He looked at my teeth and said, "You're nuts. You have perfectly nice, natural-looking teeth. Save your money."

My teeth are perfectly imperfect. I have an overbite and slight crookedness but I wouldn't change it because I think it's kind of cute. But if I had money to blow, I would definitely replace my silver fillings with composites. Only if I had more money than I knew what to do with though.

Plastic surgery has become something as commonplace as piercings and tattoos.

shrug

There's more than enough of me that could be improved with a scalpel, but I don't think that I could EVER go under the knife for ANYTHING that wasn't life-threatening.

For people who have serious self-esteem issues...I can justify some plastic surgery. That chin lift or ear-tuck may bring them happiness with minor risk.

But of course that's a double-edged sword. I know someone (who I thought was smokin' hot when I met her) that went and got a tummy-tuck, butt lift and boobs....at 43 years of age, married, with 2 small children...so she can look as good as the 20-somethings that she sees at the bars that she hangs out in on the weekends.

disbelief

THAT sort of self-esteem needs a psychiatrist, not a surgeon.

But those kids with cleft lips or women who've been burned with acid? Give them all the plastic surgery they can get.

nod

OH-! And this recent trend of teenage girls getting boob jobs as a "high school graduation gift" from their retarded parents??? rolleyes fishslap x 100

Did I miss anything?

Do you hold a different opinion on cosmetic surgery when the recipient is a man, woman, black, white, asian etc?

What about age? Do you think there should be restrictions for those who are very young or very old?

Converse. geek

i think the plastic surgery nip n tuck trend is being overmarketed to people who have dysmorphic syndrome, or are just plain too silly to understand that what make them truly attractive is what kind of person they are.

for people with unfortunate injuries or birth defects, for sure fix that. but imo plastic surgery is like the current issue with pharmaceutical companies pushing the 'anti psychotic' drug market, milked for all the ca$h its worth without regard for the true wellness of those buying into it

I think it should be limited to people with disfigurements. Otherwise, you're talkin' folks who think it's going to make them happy and it ain't.

I'll never forget a plastic surgeon on one of those news magazine shows (20/20?), who confided that cosmetic procedures were for (essentially) delusional people with low self-esteem. He said that confident people (regardless of what they look like) wouldn't bother with it.

nod Exactly. I can say the same about folks who are quick to get the gastric bypass or the lap band surgery. All their lazy asses have to do is stop running to Mickey D's every chance they get and either hiring a personal trainer or just get in a gym to work it off.

I'm all for it, in a little tweak here and there sort of way.

If I had the extra cash I would get a slight eye lift or whatever surgery you can have to get rid of eyelids that are sagging. I'd also get a little restylane in these two weird sleep creases I have on the sides of my mouth.

I dont find it to be different tho if you are changing your teeth just because they are crooked.. or you have an overbite... if I wanted a tummy tuck, thats still all me... No implant is needed, just a tighten... I really think it ALL comes down to vanity... Yes, some people go overboard, but we shouldnt judge and say that person has low self esteem.. Dressing in nice clothes, wearing make-up, curling hair, its all the same! VANITY!

Now, would I do it... Heck yes if I had the extra money... biggrin

Straightening sideways teeth is SO different than putting fake stuff on already beautiful teeth.

I agree!! But that wasnt what I asked... What if they are just plain crooked... Say like this guy..

[img:$uid]http://www.mynewsmile.com/cosmetic_dentists/photos/Frey/CrookedTeethBefore.jpg[/img:$uid]

Nothing wrong with his teeth from a medical stand point, but he got them straightened... Why??

Then, what about teeth whiteners... SOOOO not needed for any reason, yet millions of people use the whitening toothpastes, trays and even pay alot of money to have them done at the dentists...

The BIG difference is that there's no risk of DYING from braces.

Anytime you go under the knife, you risk not waking up from anesthesia.

Of course, the majority of plastic surgeries go through without a hitch...but IMO that's a risk not worth taking unless it's TRULY needed.

shrug

But that's just me. I'm fretting my increasingly thinning head of hair...and the thought of having to shave my head one day terrifies me...but I would rather wax from head-to-toe than go through "hair restoration" procedures...either the plugs or the grafts.

Good question and it's a borderline topic for me. Basically I'm against anything that one can't fix oneself without special education (except using a hairdresser to fix your hair), so that would just about exclude braces.

All this is very true! BUT, thats isnt what the original OP asked, and that isnt one of the reasons people were saying plastic surgery was dumb and for people with low self esteem...

MY point is EVERYONE has vain bones in their body... Its not right to judge or say negative things about them or try and analyze their descions to have the surgery unless you are 300 lbs, wear no make-up, never comb or stlye your hair, never whiten your teeth, never buy the "in style" fashion... etc etc etc

Do I laugh at the OVER done ones... sometimes I do, but I also feel bad for their body dismorphic syndrome and blame the stupid ass doctors who only care about making another dollar at the expense of these poor peoples bodies... They shouldnt be able to keep their liscense if they cant use their better judgements in dealing with someone who has such major issues...

the end! lol

I also dont see the difference in a mother, who has breastfeed her children getting a boob job because her tits sag to the floor at 30 years old, or people getting braces to perfect their smile to make themselves feel better because society tells them crooked teeth are ugly... The same society who laughs at folds of fat, saggy asses, saggy tits, and huge noses...

Well, the title of the thread asks for our THOUGHTS on it.

Yeah, everyone has some "vanity" in the sense that (most of us) try out best to "look good".

But all things in moderation.

Whitening coffee-stained teeth for a healthy smile? Acceptable use of bleaching agent.

Whitening dark skin to look European? Excessive us of bleaching agent.
