I'm going to Paris Are there any non so well-known, small, old jazz-clubs with some good French wine there?
I'll take a look at Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysees, Jardin du Luxembourg and Montmartre.
Anything else you'd recommend? I'm not into sights and endless museum tours for the sake of it. I also like unknown places and streets, because they usually capture the real soul of a city.
Thanks! | |

Are you a fan of the arts?
A trip to the Louvre might be in order then.
I envy you, man! Hope you have fun! Take lots of pictures (and hopefully post them on here)! The salvation of man is through love and in love. - Dr. V. Frankl

I went to some nice bars when I was there, but I can't remember what any of them were called or even where they are. I'd recommend the Louvre too. Though it's huge - you'd really need a day to experience it fully. We had lunch there and dashed around to see Venus de Mio and the Mona Lisa and a few other pieces. It's awesome. Have a great time!

I would skip the Louvre and choose a smaller museum: the Musée d'Orsay, Musée de l'Orangerie, or the Musée Rodin instead. The d'Orsay has all the great 19th century French works - both academic and Impressionist. The Orangerie houses Monet's waterlily paintings, and the Rodin Museum had his sculptures installed in a rose garden, with the golden dome of Les Invalides in the background.
I haven't been to Paris for years so I can't recommend any cabarets/bars. There's always Pere LaChaise cemetary on the outskirts or the catacombs for a little death. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

We tried to get into Musée d'Orsay this past Christmas and I swear the line was longer than at the Louvre.
Pere LaChaise we visited on Christmas Day.
Nothing says Christmas in Paris like catacombs and cemeteries.

That makes sense b/c the Musée d'Orsay is smaller, so it gets full quicker than the Louvre, which is huge. It's like that in NYC, too. There are seldom lines to get into the Met, but MoMA and the Guggenheim often have them. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

The queue was ridiculous. It would have taken hours to get inside if we had waited. Also I think we just picked a bad day to go--Tuesday after Christmas so the museum had been closed two days in a row resulting in lot of tourists fiending for some impressionism.
The last time I went to the Louvre a few years ago in the springtime, we zipped right in immediately through the metro entrance.
Another place to see if the weather is nice and you have at least a day free is Versailles just outside of Paris. I could spend a day getting lost in the gardens there alone.

I went to Paris several times, but the onyl time I really liked it was in winter. Especially Montmatre was really nice. With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

While in Monmartre, visit Sacre Coeur. The stained glass is more beautiful than Notre Dame. Visit the Louvre. Don't do a tour, but take a look. The Centre Pompidreu is a modern art museum. Great to lay out on the grass and just look at the building. Or go inside and look outside. Hit the left bank. Small streets, bookstores, coffee shops. Always fun. I had a great time in France. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Versaille's gardens made me envious. The house was way too big as were the stables (yes, I could live there . . . . I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

After the Eiffel Tower hit Champs du Mars. That's the park beneath the tower. Spent a Sunday afternoon there. Biggest surprise was finding the basketball courts. I felt right at home. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

God, I feel lucky. I've been to Paris a few times and have never waited in line for the Musée d'Orsay, though it's always just an hour or so before closing.
I would highly recommend going to it though, as I like it better than the Louvre too.
Overall, Paris is a lovely city and just walking around in the early evening is beautiful. On the main road just north of the Notre Dame, a block or so from the Pomeduex(sp?) is this set of streets where we stumbled on a shitload of Chinese people and restaurants, etc. Not nerely as sterile feeling as London's China town, and far more interesting atmosphere. It was really strange It had a sort of gritty feel to it, but not like a back-packer haven or anything. I wish I could remember the exact names of the rues, because it's worth a stroll.
Lawd, I need to make another trip to Europe soon.

Thank you all for the wonderful advice!
I had a great time. Paris is in my personal top 5. The only disadvantage is the dog shit (same with Vienna), but other than that - beautiful city, great, stylish, individualistic, civilised people and a fucking great jazz scene (jammed with probably the best musicians I ever played with).

It's a rijsttafel restaurant. Pretty small - and strictly local. Got a recommendation from one of my friends before I went - it's the only restaurant she's ever recommended that I liked. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It was 16 degrees F when I landed this morning, but I'm still going today to get some ice cream from the place Genesia mentioned.
