My dad was in the Navy after a stint in the Marines.. He got medically discharged from the marines cuz one night he was drunk home on leave, and was sneaking back into his parents basement, and the window broke and the glass cut his achilles tendon in half.. So then he went into the Navy.. But that was back in the vietnam era..

Former Air Force here.

6 months on a ship with cramped quarters and having to clean officers' living areas is enough to keep me away from that. The Air Force allowed me to get technical training in computer networking, and thus make money in the civilian world.

It all depends on what you're looking for I guess. I don't think these days are a good time to be in any military though. The forces are stretched too thin, and often doing jobs they have no business doing in countries we have no business being in. That being said, I had a blast and made lifelong friends.

Wow that's a story. Did he say how he liked it?

I am intrested in joining and they gave me a call today. I just want to do something with my life...travel...get going in some type of career. Banking is alright but there aren't any opprotunities here and it sucks.
Plus I can get medical bonuses and my student loans can be managed better....but I need to speak to them personally. Plus the travel.

Thanks! I have been getting mixed stories too and keep hearing about right now is not a good time. I keep thinking "when is?" Haven't been there at all myself I don't know if its just turning 30 making me think wild things....or really is this a good opprotunity for me?

If you really must join, look into the Air Force.

Entry requirements are stricter, you have to score higher on the ASVAB, and there are numerous overseas ports of call. Plus Airmen now get their own dorms straight away on most bases that can accomodate it.

My sweetie was in the Air Force. But he graduated from the academy and was a fighter pilot. Whole different ball game.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I tried to join the Naval Reserves in 1995, but they couldn't take me because I was too old (almost 37).

My dad was Navy, he strongly suggested I not go military when I told him I wanted to join the Air Force so I didn't. Kinda wished I had though. Navy's not so bad.

I was in the US Navy. Met my husband in Hospital Corpsman "A" School.

1988-1992- Me

1988-1999- Husband

I grew up as a US Air Force brat. My dad retired at 23+ years.

I'm firmly planted in denial

My dad always spoke fondly of his stint... But I personally have not met anyone who has served ever say they didnt like it... Sure there are some aspects they didnt like, but its like any other job... Take the good with the bad...

People in the service, whichever branch make great friends with each other... All the men in our family have been in all of the branches... We got to live in Germany for 4 years because of my husbands time iin the Army... GREAT times! My son just got out of the Marines this last dec... I can tell he really misses his buddies and the structure of what makes up the corp... But I think he is enjoying his freedom to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants and however he wants.. lol

A guy at work was Navy in the 80s and he said women on board his ship would turn tricks. So you got that.

Ernest Sewell was in the navy.

Whatever happened to him?

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
