Brands really don't say all that much, electric or acoustic.

I could tell you to go to the south of Spain and order a handmade spanish guitar from one of the world's finest guitar builders, but it still wouldn't suit you, if you didn't like the way it played.

And sure a Fender or a Gibson, or whatever famous guitar is usually of great quality, but on a genuine one, you easily spend more than 2 to 3 thousands dollars, than on many cheaper guitars that can also have a great sound and go a long way too.

What's MOST important is that YOU like the way the guitar plays and sounds. When you've found that, you've found your guitar.

That is true! But it's probably gonna take me awhile, but it will be worth it

Once I knew what I was looking for, I found mine within a matter of weeks.

You should start with one or the other, because they aren't the same. If you're just starting, go to a store and have someone show you guitars in your price range. Mess around with them in your lap, or standing, depending on how you're going to play. Ask someone in the store to show you a chord or two, they really won't mind. Buy something that feels good while you're holding it and playing. The ease of finger placement on/around the neck is important, but so is how a guitar fits in your arms and against your body.

I'm quoting myself.

Go to a music store.

Hold the guitars.

Play the guitars. Even if you don't know what you're doing.

All the advice in this thread means nothing until you've actually HELD the guitars IN YOUR HANDS.

Are you this with men too? wink

Like cerebus said, just go to some stores and check them out. Hold them, touch them, play them. Listen to how they sound and how it feels to play on them. Ask the owner what guitar would be really good for a beginner (preferably something that plays very smoothly). My main advise however would be, whatever you buy, don't go for the trademark guitars just because. Go for the one you really love to play on.

Go ahead and get that electric, because clearly you want one. That's cool.

I'd go with a Squier Strat or Telecaster, or Epiphone whatever (I have a Les Paul and LOVE it). That "rockabilly/jazz" guitar pictured below is an Ibanez Artcore and they get great reviews too, and aren't that expensive.

You'll also need an amp, and I say totally get a Fender Mustang I or II ($100, $200). They model classic amps without being overly complicated. I strongly feel that too many buttons and gadgets and options will kill actual learning in a heartbeat - too much distraction. Even this amp runs the risk of that. But it's such a damn good value that I say, get it. I play a Mustang II and it's probably the best $200 I ever spent.

Have fun!

I would beg to differ, brand does matter. biggrin Speaking of acoustic guitars, in my humble opinion. smile

The good news is you can buy a damn good acoustic guitar for $500.00 are less. I tend to like Yamaha acoustic guitars because the are consistently well made. I suggest whatever type of acoustic guitar you choose, make sure it has a solid wood top. In the $500 range the guitar's saddle will be made of plastic; go to a guitar tech and have plastic saddle replaced with bone and a good set-up.

Yamaha FG series - http://usa.yamaha.com/pro...uct_lineup

The other brand I like, Walden guitars: the 500 Series Nautra Line.

http://www.waldenguitars....atura.html

The other things that should be considered are, size, neck shape, and fretboard length of a guitar. Like so many others my first gutiar was a dreadnought... basically because that what was being sold in most shops. If I had it to do all over again I would've purchased a small guitar, OM or OOOmodel. I basically play OO size guitars now; make sure the gutiar you purchase is comfortable hold and play.

Unless you spend a bunch of money you won't get anything too fabulous.

I could recommend just getting an acoustic because cheap electric guitars (and especially cheap amps) don't sound that great, and an acoustic guitar looks better just sitting in a room unplayed than does a cheap guitar and cheap amp, but mostly people get what they want and it doesn't matter what I recommend lol

I bought a nylon string guitar from a girl in high school for $20, that's what I learned on nod

I bought a Nice acoustic guitar from a Pawn shop when I first started studying guitar. I paid $75. That was what I could afford at the time. Best Buy sells instruments also. The store near me does not. That is not fare. I always have to travel far just to buy strings.
