Please consider signing this petition for a dear friend of mine...

A friend and fellow American ex-pat in Canada is fighting for his family to remain here, where they've become well established, as the country's immigration authority apparently has deemed his autistic son too much of a social liability to stay. Please read the background info and, if it fits your sensibilities, consider signing this petition. Thank you.

OVERVIEW

Chris Reynolds wants to stay in Canada with his dad and brother. But the only way his family’s application for permanent residency will be approved is if he’s not on it.

Immigration officials say Reynolds, 20, will be too big a drain on the health care system because he has Asperger and Tourette syndromes. He has been deemed “inadmissible.”

His family is torn: Should they leave Canada or leave Chris off their application?

Full story and petition here.

Although sending anyone to Canada seems to me like punishing them severely, I signed the petition.

Holy déjà vu.

I hope this ends up like a local case that was resolved last week.

South Korean family facing deportation over autistic son allowed to stay:

MONCTON, N.B. — Immigration Minister Jason Kenney will rescind a deportation order for a South Korean family at the centre of a growing public protest in New Brunswick now that the province has confirmed it will cover health costs associated with the family's autistic son, a federal source confirmed Thursday.

The Maeng family's story attracted national attention because federal officials had said the family had to leave Canada by June 30 because providing health care and social services for 14-year-old Sung-Joo would put too much strain on the system.

Tom (Chris' father) was SO pumped about the good news for the Maeng family. He really saw it as a good omen. It was only like a day or two later that he got his bad news. sad

Eh. shrug People will be who they are.

I'll hope that despite a lack of replies, some folk did read the article and maybe lent their support to the petition.
