PHOTOGRAPHERS: Help me out!

I'm looking for a new, somewhat affordable camera.

My camera is from, like, WW2 -- the big one. lol

I'm not talking top-of-the-line, but decent.

Suggestions?

DSLR or compact?

I was happy starting with an entry level DSLR with kit lenses and learning from there. I've upgraded twice since, but people will happily buy those second hand from you if you care for them well and sell within 2 years or so. I like DSLRs best because of the flexibility with lenses, even though I pretty much only ever use a 50mm err because I heart it.

my friend borrowed my camera and it just "broke" for no reason

funny, since now there are bumps & scratches all over it mad

I had a little Canon Elph, and it was okay. Cheap, and took decent shots, but not particularly aesthetically appealing stuff due to the crappy little lens. Better outdoors than indoors.

I'm thinking of getting that DSLR now

my sister in law got one for her 40th, I think it was a Nikon D3000 or something, and for her 41st is getting a 35mm AF lens and a little flash that she can bounce off a ceiling - her photos are great all of a sudden!! eyepop razz

I have a bunch of lenses for my old film camera, so it makes sense to get an SLR. But I got a small camera to put in my pocket, and never brought that one anywhere either lol

are they all manual focus? Reason I ask is all the auto focus ones won't be auto focus any more with the cheaper DSLRs. With Nikon DX you have to buy DX lenses, and your old ones will all be manual focus only. If your old lenses aren't particularly great in quality (were they cheap?) don't let that rule your purchase decision.

For the money I'm happy with my Nikon D40x. Whatever the replacement is, D60 or whatever's come since, might be worth a look. They're very affordable. smile

I think these are compatable with the new Canons, but I will check to be sure

The cheaper Nikons like mine were a bit crap like that. lol

My sister and sister in law in both found out AFTER they bought, what Ken Rockwell refers to as the worst camera nikon ever made, that buying lenses for it is a pain in the ass

Oh shit, which camera? Not the D40x, I assume. It's a nifty little camera, unspectacular and barely a proper DSLR but cheap as chips. smile

I don't have any money to buy lenses so I'm ok with those limitations. woot!

Oh, it's a bit like D40 level but with video too? I always thought that was unnecessary.

If you have a good fast lens you can shoot great looking HD footage with these cheap cameras, people film music video clips with canon 5D for example
