City Of God

Man! watched this today in film class and what a powerful film!

It was my first time seeing it and man... this is one great film but definitely not one i can watch very often it's quite upsetting.

The performances where so fantastic! these little kids in these disturbing situations even acting wise it's just amazing how they pull it off note for note.

Anyone else seen the film? what are your thought's?

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

One my favorite films

A++ Acting ,Cinematography, storyline and everything in between.

only flaw , Even thought the Guy who played LIL ze was wonderful. i wish they would have gotten an actor that looked like the real Lil ze (who was slightly over weight and had bad acne) that guy was not bad looking enough.

I thought that the movie was very powerful, but I loathed the 99% of the characters, so I won't watch it again anytime soon...lol

the scenes with the crazy boy shooting down people disturbed me... confused

I wonder what was the reaction in Brazil...

True! he was not as unattractive as they made him out to be but his personality was

Many scenes disturbed me confused

First of kid's in danger is the one thing in film that really will make me go gulp, and kids being shot, murdered or murdering other people is just fucked up beyond comparison.

One of my favourite gangster movies for sure, love the soundtrack too. Y'know many of the actors actually were from the life they were depicting, I heard the one who played Blacky was arrested for a street robbery a few years after the films release.

You should check out Amores Perros if you haven't seen it.

There's also 'City of Men,' which is not a sequel but features many of the same casts.

There's also another movie 'Elite Squad' which covers the same neighborhoods from the view of the police.

I just watched 'City of God' about two weeks ago. I've seen it about eight or nine times.

'City Of God' is a superb movie! 'City Of Men' is an extension of that film ['City Of Men' was also a TV series as well].

I also own the TV series. Nowhere near as violent as the movies.

Storyline

In 1997, before the visit of the pope to Rio de Janeiro, Captain Nascimento from BOPE (Special Police Operation Battalion) is assigned to eliminate the risks of the drug dealers in a dangerous slum nearby where the pope intends to be lodged. Captain Nascimento is trying to find a man to replace him because his wife is pregnant and he intends to quit the command and become a trainer of the new recruits. Meanwhile, the two idealistic friends Neto and Matias join the Military Police force expecting to become honest policemen and fight the criminals. However, they see only corruption, lack of competence and stupid bureaucracy in the Military Police, and after a serious incident in the Morro da Babilônia, they decide to join the BOPE. The lives of Capitain Nascimento, Neto and Matias are entwined along the next months, first in the tough training period and then in action against drug dealers...Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de ...ro, Brazil
