Does anyone else hang a pickle on the Christmas tree? My grandparents used to do it, but we never did.
Think I will this year. I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure

I don't hang a pickle on the Christmas tree, nor have I ever known anyone who has.
Is this some quaint old world tradition, or do your grandparents have some family story behind it? I'm firmly planted in denial

It's an old German tradition... The "pickle" is a glass pickle-shaped ornament. The first person to find it hidden in the branches on Christmas morning supposedly received good luck for the year.
....duh, people...

I will not say anything about johnart and his love of pickles... We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

ahh, there u have it! never heard of that one & it's very quirky. a reminder of when xmas seemed so uncomplicated. obviously the op grandparents were extreme pickle hangers, no fancy ornaments involved! cool. i think it's really lovely to keep xmas family traditions alive, (that excludes dumping oneself on the rellies, arguing over dinner & punch up after tea)

Interesting tradition. Our neighbors in Cleveland were German, and it's something I never picked up from them.
They did, however, follow the old German tradition of decorating their tree with dozens of real wax candles, which they lit on Christmas Day. I'd never seen that before either. It was one of the most beautiful tree decor effects I've ever seen, even if a bit scary. They'd only leave the candles lit for 10 minutes or so, while we sang a song, toasted, etc. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I would leave a fire extinguisher with a bow on it on their damn doorstep every single year.
I hope it wasn't a Prince song. RADIO EDIT! RADIO EDIT! [Edited 12/1/10 10:19am]

Never done it, but i'm strangely drawn to the idea. What kind of pickle? If it's gherkins there could be trouble... I'm addicted to them and they wouldn't last 5 minutes.

Oh yeah we have a beautiful glass pickle with crystals on it. Didn't know it was a German custom though, I think someone found the pickle in a Christmas store and the story came in the box. We hide it on the tree and the first child to find it gets an extra small present. This year will probably be a fight because we have a lot of kids coming to stay for Christmas. If I am not mistaken, there are also other food type ornaments that are supposed to have a similar story or tradition that goes with them. Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Berthold Auerbach
