Rutger student Tyler Clementi commits suicide after roommate secretly streams him having sex with a man..

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2010/09/29/prison-time-may-await-pair-of-rutgers-students/

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A Rutgers University student, who was allegedly secretly taped having sex in his dorm room, took his own life, according to his family’s lawyer.

Attorney Paul Mainardi confirmed what law enforcement sources had earlier told 1010 WINS — that 18-year-old Tyler Clementi jumped from the George Washington Bridge last week.

“Tyler was a fine young man, and a distinguished musician,”‘ Mainardi said in a statement. “The family is heartbroken beyond words.”

His body has not been recovered but officials said Clementi’s wallet was found on the bridge and his car was found nearby.

A body was recovered Wednesday afternoon at 218th Street in the Inwood section of Manhattan. However, authorities have made no connection with Clementi’s death. Authorities are awaiting the Medical Examiner to determine the race, age and cause of death of the recovered body.

Dharun Ravi, 18, was charged with two counts of invasion of privacy after allegedly putting a camera in Clementi’s room and transmitting a sexual encounter over the Internet.

Danielle Birnbohn lives next door to the dorm room Clementi shared with Ravi.

“[Clementi] was considered a missing person and yesterday they were cleaning out his room.” Birnbohn said. “All the hearsay around the dorm was it was on Skype.”

On campus, students were totally surpised, especially those who briefly got to know Clementi.

“Somewhat guarded, normal kid…I was shocked when I heard what happened,” freshman Frankie Pagliano said.

“I knew him too. He was a good kid. It’s terrible,” freshman Brandon Baldini said.

Prosecutors said Ravi tried to do the same thing to yet another classmate just days after the first incident.

The Middlesex County prosecutors office has also charged another student — Molly Wei — with invasion of privacy. It is believed that Wei owned the computer used in the alleged spying.

Students said the information got out on Twitter.

A Twitter account belonging to a Dharun was recently deleted, but in a cached version retained through Google he sent a message on Sept. 19: “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”

Two days later, he wrote on Twitter: “Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it’s happening again.”

“I think it’s sad someone had to die like that. It’s kind of messed up,” freshman Akash Mevalla said.

“I don’t understand why anyone would do that — you just have to be careful,” sophomore Jule Kallas said.

Both Ravi and Wei could face five years in prison after the hidden-camera sex scandal.

I do believe they(the streamers) should be charged for "invasion of privacy" but nothing beyond that. If it's their first offense then they should be receive a sentence worthy of them committing a first offenst i.e. probation and some community service.

In this day and age no one should have to jump off a bridge because he/she is gay. There was something else going on there. I would hate to believe he(Tyler) was ashamed of being gay. Too many gay women and men have been brutalized or risked being brualized to change attitudes if not laws about gay people in America for people to be jumping off bridges because they're gay.

I say throw the book at the roommate. I think he faces up to five years in prison if convicted. That's the least he should do. I would say that even if the poor victim hadn't killed himself. The crime of putting someone's private sexual activity on the internet without their permission is a big one, first offense or not.

This was a SERIOUS offense (even if he hadn’t taken his life), which warrants serious consequences.

How very sad. A young man, beginning his journey of finding who he is only to be violated by fucking stupid pricks in this world. When people talk about the gay agenda, there surely is one: to prevent young men and women like him from being harrassed to the point that they feel the only option is to kill themselves. What a beautiful young man and my heart goes out to his family and friends and all involved in this sad situation. heart

I don't necessarily disagree with you regarding being sentenced as first time offenders. But you do understand that his sexual acts were streamed to the public without his knowledge or consent, right? Being gay and coming out by choice when it feels comfortable for you is a whole lot different than having your lifestyle made public via unknown online streaming. Whose to say that was even the way he would have lived the rest of his life? Also, being gay in America is still a huge issue for many people. Laws (of which there are actually very few) don't change that.

Thus my saying they should be charged with "invasion of privacy". So much has been done to change the attitude towards gays around the world there was no need for Tyler to literally jump off a bridge. I'll stand by that statement. I live in a country where having gay intercourse can get one arrested, but personally I don't see what the big deal is about who someone chooses to fuck. It shouldn't be a big deal.

I am in no way trying to excuse the idiots(streamers) actions. They did act like total assholes. However, it is their first offense and the courts will treat them as first time offenders. I would be pissed and embarrassed if someone streamed me having sex with my girlfriend. But, I live in a world where the prevailing attitude about gays is "who gives a fuck". I don't think it was a good enough reason(if there is such a thing) to jump off a bridge.
