** on the Poll/Vote page (right above the Comments box) there's a button to invite up to 8 ppl at a time from your friends list to go vote. Ppl can do that, too, to help spread the word in case they have friends who aren't online every day and/or may have missed the wall post.
When done choosing ppl, click the 'Send Poll Invitation' button and, if you want, in the pop-up you can click the "Add Personal Message" link (under the To name) to personalize the invite.

you can make your profile totally private

~ and/or if you know of specific ppl on Facebook you don't want to hear from, you can completely block them from seeing you or sending you a message (you just visit their page -you can search for them by name or email address- and choose the 'Report/Block this person' link in the left column)

I hear you can also suspend your account for a while.. my cousin did that when work got too busy; he's a detective
