I've always owned a car (since I was 17) and this will be the first year that I don't actually own one. I did the math on owning a car in the states and it ran to something like $2000+ a year even without payments (more with payments), when you factor in tires, maintenance, checkups, etc. etc. The issue is that unless you live in NYC or a metropolitan city with really good public transportation, then a car is a necessity in the USA. Couple with the fact that I'm a home owner, my house is in the suburbs, and Tampa's public transportation is ...subpar... a car was just necessary. Plus I owned a kayak, and needed a way of getting my boat to and from the water. Here in Bangkok, there's little reason to own a car because the transportation system is so good here---you can get ANYWHERE in the city on a bus, subway/train, boat, or any other vehicle imaginable. And it's all pretty cheap. I can't say that I miss driving at all honestly, and wish urban centers would all have public transportation systems that actually worked. America is way, way, waaaaayyyyy behind the curb on transportation. Its going to be damn hard to pull that one off given how much open land expanse we have. The earth's sixth-largest continent, Europe about 4 million square miles in size, covers an area a little bit bigger than the United States So, Our one country economy cant compete with the Fifty (50) self-governing political entities that exist in Europe. So we are likely to stay wayyyyy behind the curve for a long time to come. Although I imagine we will live to see it or be cockroaches crawling through it for our crimes here on earth! yeah, and here in the States they once had (what was it called) the Red Car line once? It is said that that was an exceptionally effecient means of public transportation years ago all through the LA area. However (comma) as I understand it, Firestone tire company lobbied some politicians and bought it so they could tear it out. Guess Firestone didn't think they were selling enough tires for automobiles. Now the city realizes that they really need the Red Car back but ... too many buildings have been built up and they'll never pull it off structurally and get that re-installed. this is the time of the first fast.

I've had my licence since I was 23. I would have had it sooner but I was in a bad car accident when I was 19 and was too nervous to get behind the wheel of a car.
I have a Peugeot 307. I have to have it working and with petrol in the tank at all times, in case my youngest has a bad run of SVTs (her heart starts running too fast) and I have to get her to the hospital. Driving in the uk is LUDICROUSLY expensive but in my town the transportation system sucks I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

Driving in the uk is LUDICROUSLY expensive but in my town the transportation system sucks It sure is. It is more a privilege than a right here. I did not get my US license until I was 19 (which is really late) due to being in 5 car accidents. (Other ppl driving obviously) One was a major one involving a drunk driver. I had no desire to get my license for a while after all of that. I have a US license but do not have my UK one. I have driven here in the first year when I was still legal to drive. Once I got pregnant, I stopped. Now I would have to get my UK one to drive. I would be fine to drive here if I could just stick to the motorway. It is the tiny roads and roundabouts that scare the crap out of me. [Edited 3/20/10 4:26am]

Yes. I live in America's 14th-largest city by population, but our public transportation is ranked #100. That's pathetic. We finally have some serious plans for a real system, including rail lines, but it'll take time to finalize things and start building.
When the weather is nice, I'll walk to my office (about 1.1 miles each way), but in winter, forget it. Also, while most of business travel is to state and federal courts that are mere blocks from my office, I have to be prepared to travel anywhere in the state. Next month I have a hearing in New Albany, Indiana, which is a two-hour drive each way. During my Seattle years, I did not own a car by choice, but still maintained a license, in part so I could use Zipcar.
