Why? -Driving is incredibly dangerous. I know more people who have been involved in everything from minor mishaps to full-blown accidents than I do people who haven't. -Cars are a massive expense. First there is the cost to purchase or lease, then insurance, then the fee for a license, then maintenance. And let's not forget gas! -The environmental impact of the auto industry is one of the modern world's worst sins. -There are a lot of people on the road who very obviously should not be driving. -Cars are for most people a want and not really a need. Most people who do drive either don't actually need to drive as much or as often as they do, or they don't need to drive at all. -Driving enables laziness. ? I don't get your last point; laziness?, you mean those "road freaks" (no offence) who usually drive around (during hours) just for the heck of it? [Edited 3/15/10 5:28am] I mean people who drive down the block instead of just walking. Not all drivers do it, but if a person is inclined to laziness having a car isn't going to help. I'm 38 and don't drive! I have never really had a need to. I have a large family, with 4 siblings and we all live quite close to each other, if I have a need to go anywhere of any distance; one of them gives me a lift. I have never even had a lesson.
I do my food shopping online and get it delivered, so no need to drive to the supermarket. "I know that living with u baby, was sometimes hard...but I'm willing 2 give it another try.

I won my first drag race (quarter mile) at the age of 14 in a car that was stock. I won by 2 car lengths I learned at 14 how to do a 180. I never mastered a 360. And I never really mastered speed shifting. but was I learning. Guess ....I got my license when I was 15. I wouldn't mind getting a bike license. I talked to a friend of mine about that last year who rides a V-twin. May he RIP. <--not auto related. My car at present is deader than a doornail. Well, the engine starts but there are some problems with the motor mounts and I think U-joint is gone ... it used to be a 4 wheel drive ... now it's just toast. Ohhh I used to have a 4 wheel drive now it's just a dust collector for the drive All day long I used to ride now I'm thumbing just to get by lol. well anyway...it could be a funny tune. if i were in the mood to write. peace. this is the time of the first fast.

whether you owned it or not? [Edited 3/17/10 14:40pm] My third car was a 1976 Malibu, the v8 felt exciting at 18. I ended up hitting railroad tracks fast enough that I had all four wheels off the ground. Then came a 1980 Z28 incredible lower end power....too young and stupid and destroyed the car and got a dui at 18. Those cars put a desire for real speed in me..something they weren't actually very good with....the Z28 was good in a straight line up to about 90 mph, then it was all done, and forget about trying to take a turn. So next came a 1979 Porsche 924. The "slow" Porsche was absolutely incredible whipping down narrow backroads. It felt glued to the road and allowed me to actualy drive fast thru turns....also it was the first manual transmission I owned. The price of parts was beyond me at the time, and skimping on repairs caused me to loose it in a fire. Next was a 16 valve VW Scirocco. Faster off the line than anything I had owned so far, and extremely good in the turns. Black and the windows had been tinted an illegal dark black. A little too big and high of the ground, but oh to wind out that engine to the high revs..... Then marriage kids mini vans and ford escorts Till about five years ago I bought two Porsche 944s off ebay, each brought up to date on maintenance and sold (or at least that was the plan). But finally I was driving genuinely fast cars. Cars I could cruise at 120 and were dead smooth doing it. During my lunch break at work I used to get in the car and see how fast I could get to 100 and back. What an absolute blast, probably one of the best deals there is in a used sports car right now. One car sold..... ....And one got traded for a Jaguar XJ-S. Not as road hugging as a porsche, and due to the rear end gearing it didn't accelerate even as fast as the Camaro, but just to get in floor it and let the big V12 rev up past 6500, and pull the car like a freight train 80....90....100....110...120...130.....I am rebuilding the engine right now, and then will probably have to let it go due to gas consumption and having too many other projects ( anothe jag, an alfa sedan, three bikes, and an embryonic race car project) [Edited 3/17/10 17:08pm] Now I'm older than movies, Now I'm wiser than dreams, And I know who's there

Woooo Hooo!!! all four wheels in the air? Wow..... what a rush!!!!! (excuse me but... Daayaamn..think my nipples just got hard...lol) All four wheels airborne?!?!?! that's impressive. Sooo...how'd she land? how high were ya? and how fast did ya have to kick it up to ...to get airborne off the railroad crossing? Then came a 1980 Z28 incredible lower end power....too young and stupid and
destroyed the car and got a dui at 18. Ooooo Z cars. those were fun. I remember those. They always looked so cool burning rubber down the street. lol. sorry to hear about your dui in your youth...but sounds like you walked away (since it sounds like your a family man, married now with kids) that's a very good thing.... and it sounds like you learned your lesson. Gotta respect that. (both the family man aspect and the fact that you survived your youth) Those cars put a desire for real speed in me..something they weren't actually very >>good with....the Z28 was good in a straight line up to about 90 mph, then it was all done, and forget about trying to take a turn.
That's interesting. You make a good point. I always noticed the wheel well on those cars and how tight it was. And you could hear the tires hitting the well .... which is NOT good. maybe it was good I never did get one of those. I thought they looked awesome ... but I was loyal to my Grand Prix. I get a little emotionally involved with a great car lol. I was sure that my Grand Prix had a soul or had obtained some kind of consciencenous. LOL. some cars just have something special about them that way. I've owned 3 different Grand Prix's in my life and a few other makes of cars. So next came a 1979 Porsche 924. The "slow" Porsche was absolutely incredible
whipping down narrow backroads. It felt glued to the road and allowed me to actualy drive fast thru turns....also it was the first manual transmission I owned. I've ridden in one ...couple of times but I never drove one of those. However, your right it does stick to the road. The price of parts was beyond me at the time, and skimping on repairs caused me to loose it in a fire.
Oooo a fire? am I to understand the engine caught fire while you were driving it? *yikes* Then marriage kids mini vans and ford escorts
Mini vans seem cool. I kind of like the idea of a van that feels like a car. I detest ford escorts though. no pick up power to them....for one thing. that's a car that scares me. however, I do understand how it is with kids. Mommy's and Daddy's gotta do what they gotta do for the munchkins. but uhm, have ya souped up da wifey-poo's mini van yet? tee hee hee.... yeah yeah yeah .. i can see it now... hot rod mama ..in her mini van burning rubber down the street clear to the schoolhouse... or the grocery store. lol. the kids sittin in the back with their eyes wide open ..mouths dropped open ...speechless ... hair standing on end. LOL> sorry, just had a visual there....I do have a bit of a strange sense of humor. lol. Till about five years ago I bought two Porsche 944s off ebay, each brought up to date on maintenance and sold (or at least that was the plan). But finally I was driving genuinely fast cars. What an absolute blast, probably one of the best deals there is in a used sports car right now. One car sold..... really? that sounds interesting. I've got a little boy ... so I need more than a 2 seater really. However, (comma) I am out here in the middle of the desert ...miles from town. Basically my horse has four flat feet... so to speak. So it's done. there's several things wrong with that car....not just the missing U joint. Not a good situation to be in ... especially with a little one on ya to look after. I'll check ebay ... and a few other places online. I'm keeping an open mind on what kind of vehicle right now. A fast car would be fun but .... we'll just see. I don't know why one can't have the best of both worlds... exciting and practical ...but we'll just see. Get the car together ...pack the baby's things and get the heck out of the desert.... if I can. Not sure where to go. some place good to raise a family. that's a must. but not too big a town ... with all the heavy traffic ..yet not so cut off from everything either. who knows where that is. I dont. all I know for sure is that this desert is not that place... and that's an under-statement. but first ...got to get the car situation together. guess that's a completely different topic anyway... so let me stay on point here. I should talk to you about parting a car out. thinkin that's what i need to do with this dead horse i got now. And one got traded for a Jaguar XJ-S. Not as road hugging as a porsche, and due to the rear end gearing it didn't accelerate even as fast as the Camaro, but just to get in floor it and let the big V12 rev up past 6500, and pull the car like a freight train 80....90....100....110...120...130.....I am rebuilding the engine right now, and then will probably have to let it go due to gas consumption and having too many other projects ( anothe jag, an alfa sedan, three bikes, and an embryonic race car project)'
I've heard that english cars ... especially Jaguars break down alot ... what do you think about that theory? Do you find that to be true ..or is it too early to tell? [Edited 3/18/10 15:08pm] this is the time of the first fast.

TheVoid said: I have a drivers license, and think I will always have one. I can't fathom not at least having the option to drive someplace in a rental if I want or need to.
I've always owned a car (since I was 17) and this will be the first year that I don't actually own one. I did the math on owning a car in the states and it ran to something like $2000+ a year even without payments (more with payments), when you factor in tires, maintenance, checkups, etc. etc. The issue is that unless you live in NYC or a metropolitan city with really good public transportation, then a car is a necessity in the USA. Couple with the fact that I'm a home owner, my house is in the suburbs, and Tampa's public transportation is ...subpar... a car was just necessary. Plus I owned a kayak, and needed a way of getting my boat to and from the water. Here in Bangkok, there's little reason to own a car because the transportation system is so good here---you can get ANYWHERE in the city on a bus, subway/train, boat, or any other vehicle imaginable. And it's all pretty cheap. I can't say that I miss driving at all honestly, and wish urban centers would all have public transportation systems that actually worked. America is way, way, waaaaayyyyy behind the curb on transportation. Its going to be damn hard to pull that one off given how much open land expanse we have. The earth's sixth-largest continent, Europe about 4 million square miles in size, covers an area a little bit bigger than the United States So, Our one country economy cant compete with the Fifty (50) self-governing political entities that exist in Europe. So we are likely to stay wayyyyy behind the curve for a long time to come. Although I imagine we will live to see it or be cockroaches crawling through it for our crimes here on earth! Well look whom I found dipping their toe in the murky waters! :eyeroll: At least offer me a damn cup of coffee!

I've had a license since I was 16 and have had a car most of the time since, but I gave it up for about 5 years in my early 20's and then I gave up my last car almost 2 years ago. I don't have a car anymore as I really don't have need of one. It would be silly for me to drive to work now considering how much parking would cost. I take the bus. I can get around just about anywhere I want to go in the city by public transit. The cost of a car (car payment, insurance, maintenance, gas, etc.) just isn't worth it to me. I'd rather spend my money on other things. You seem like a very disciplined person. I admire that. I've had a license since I was 17 and bought my first car when I was 22. I can't see myself without a car because I hate taking buses and subways. Something always seems to happen when I ride either...fights break out, hoodlums playing craps on the subway floor, all kinds of riff-raff and rudeness. Im with you! Im to old for that crap and I always feel like I need to soak in disinfectant after. I'm not a snob but I am a disease/ germ phob.....xample: The NY subways were just filthy, loud and stunk of garbage and urine! Makes me shudder! Well look whom I found dipping their toe in the murky waters! :eyeroll: At least offer me a damn cup of coffee!

Had a license since I was 16. I've gone carless for a year or so here and there. Don't currently own a working one, but probably will again shortly. Getting to my job by transit is pretty inconvenient, even though it's not that far away. Seattle's public transportation isn't terrible by American standards, but it isn't great by any standards.
I would LOVE to live someplace like NYC with a real subway system. "What's 'non-sequitur' mean? Do I look it up in a Fag-to-English dictionary?"

Huggiebear said: Lotus2unfld said: ok. can anyone do a conversion here? 191,000km on the clock? educate me please. I have no clue as to what that means in real life. lol Oh yeah I forgot, America the cultural and technological leader in the world still uses an outdated measurement system, that most of the world discarded in the 1970s. Translation into American "120,000 miles on the Speedometer" I think. It means the automobile has travelled 120,000 miles since it was assembled in 1992. alright Huggie. Thanks for responding. However (comma) lets not get to snippy please. You actually stated 191,000km on the clock; originally. I'm thinking .. is he talkin about a race around the track .. that kind of clock? surely he's not talk about the tact meter ... or the speedometer cuz even with not being that familiar with the metric system... I kinda figured you didn't mean 191,000 miles per hour. or anything near it. ; > then again .. what the heck do I know? but thanks for clarifying... 121,000 miles on the odometer read. Okay. Gotcha now. cool... this is the time of the first fast.

I really wanted a white Corvette. Or maybe red. I kept vascillating between the two. I never did get the Vette but .. I did ride in one .... I don't recall driving it... but riding in it was enough for me. They real pretty to look at .. but I dont like sitting on the floor LOL. sheeshh. that was tough. Those bucket seats were just like sitting right on the hard assed floorboard. LOL. Hard on the high heels too while gettin in and out of that thing. sheesh more like crawling in and out of it. LOL. and it was bumby .... didn't like it. not a smooth ride. and your right... trying to see over the hood .. is a challenge. needless to say ... I didn't daydream of owning Vette anymore after that. Yes, indeed. When I got out of the driver seat my ass was sore...felt like I just got off a horse! rofl. good analogy this is the time of the first fast.
