You don't become great by winning the "Crenshaw Open"  The Tour has a tiered hierarchy. The slams are at the highest tier, but the Tier-1/Masters Series tournaments are the next step below (and the top players are automatically entered and "required" to play). So, while a Tier-3 tournament may not hold much weight, tournaments like Indian Wells, Miami, Rome, and the year-end Masters Cup are very important. No one's disputed that they're important, this is about the ULTIMATE importance in tennis...and that can ONLY be winning the slams. Some people (usually non-fans) see this as an excuse, but I just think it's good match analysis. The sisters' blend of power and speed make them the two most talented players on the tour. I like all 4 semifinalists, so I'm happy with however it pans out. I don't think Safina and especially Dementieva are "machines" at all.
