Senate Bill 6116 Not Dead: Senator Kohl-Wells Says It Has The Votes But Needs Your Help! April 24, 2009




Despite misleading headlines in the Seattle Times
this week, Senate Bill 6116 is NOT "really dead." In
fact, Sen. Jeanie Kohl-Wells, co-author of the bill, says
she has the votes to get it passed through the
Senate! Sen. Kohl-Wells was on TV Thursday night
talking about the bill and has been in contact with SOS
leadership about getting it on the Senate floor for a
vote.

Steve Kelley's article in the Times today provides solid
commentary on why SB 6116 is important, and the
Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce (QACC) has
joined the fight to revitalize Seattle Center:

"Major economic drivers in the lower Queen Anne
neighborhood include Seattle Center and the events
that are held there, and the Sonics were a major part
of that," QACC director Jill Arnow said. "In the past
eight months alone, three restaurants have closed on
the street that KeyArena fronts (First Ave. North). I'm
sure there are more to come if SB6116 does not
pass."

* Save Seattle Center - The City of Seattle
currently
has no funding source in place for the unanimously
approved Seattle Center Century 21 Master Plan, a
$570 million public infrastructure project that will bring
the grounds into the modern era over the next 20
years. According to the Master Plan, "KeyArena
patrons and businesses created $353 million in
business activity, 3,252 jobs and $102 million in labor
income in King County in 2005. State and local
governments received $13.3 million in tax revenues
as a result of the business activity at KeyArena in
2005."

* Create Jobs and Economic Stimulus - A
modern
Seattle Center with additional funding for arts and
cultural centers all over King County will create
thousands of jobs and increase tourism from out-of-
towners, providing a crucial infrastructure investment
during this recession economy.

* Attain Private Investment in Public
Facilities - A
local investment group led by Microsoft CEO Steve
Ballmer promised to contribute $150 million plus cost
overruns in private money toward a $300 million
remodel of KeyArena and buy a new NBA team for
Seattle. The entire region benefits by getting a
massive public works project for only 25% of the full
cost, with 50% from Ballmer and the final 25% coming
from a ticket tax on KeyArena events.

Portland's perimeter defense is pure shit. AB and Lowry are having a grand ole time in the lane. I'm curious to see whether or not Portland will continue to front Yao the whole damn game which makes AB, Lowry, Landry, and all the other Rockets' jobs a little easier.

I think Oden has shown real flashes of brilliance at times, but he's inconsistent, as can be expected of a rookie. I think having an entire offseason to polish his footwork and develop a better offensive repertoire will do wonders.

What Portland really needs is to upgrade the point guard position. These playoffs have shown that Steve Blake is not a long term solution at the PG, and with Sergio and Bayless practically nailed to the bench, a move needs to be made. Given Kevin Pritchard's tendency to make a big splash around the draft, I expect that to happen!

Tonight's loss caps an incredibly disappointing season for the Utah Jazz. Injuries don't tell the entire story- this team just didn't have it this year.

And Portland might be eliminated tomorrow, on my birthday.

Did y'all hear about ex-Net Jayson Williams yesterday? He went into a suicidal rage at a Manhattan hotel and the cops had to taser him. They found empty pill bottles and suicide notes all over his room. His friends always said he had a lot of demons, a dark side that would surface every now and then.
