R.I.P. Analog TV (1936-2009) Today is the day that all over-the-air broadcast signals in the United States are required to switch from analog transmission to digital transmission. On the east coast the switch has already occurred, but as I post this in the state of Illinois, the switch is only minutes away.

I have had digital cable forever now, but I just wish the cost was not so high!I have one of those "bundles" where you pay for cable, high speed internet and land phone. I pay 230.00 a month!!  | |

 Oh yeah I forgot that was today.
People in my circle kept asking me over and over to go online for them and get their coupons. I'm the local nerd in these parts. Meh. My dad got our converters earlier. The rest of our TVs are run on Comcast digi cable. I miss the analog. We got a preview of the DTV and it was hella annoying when the signal would mess up a bit because of the wind. My gramma calls it "the messy squares". Alas, this is the end of analog. Goodbye old friend.  | |

I have cable and my picture on my TV has been flickering for the past 2 days. Hopefully the transition goes better than what I've experienced for the past 2 days. | |

I am 98% thankful! We don't have cable and could only watch like 4 channels because of the horrific reception and then my mom would juggle 3 VCRs because one channel would come in on one TV and not the other and vice versa vice versa and we put the boxes in last night and EVERY. SINGLE. CHANNEL. COMES. IN. CRYSTAL. CLEAR  AND we get extra channels for free! 
The only thing I'm not happy about is when the picture breaks up into blocks and swims around because the signal is disturbed. This is going to piss me off to no end cuz you know this crap will happen at one point during the most important part of a show!  Anybody know if that will ever be corrected?

I had a few reservations about the transition, though I already have cable. I did buy a DTV converter box last December, and I did a test hookup to my TV. I was able to pick up 33 channels with my old rabbit ears antenna, though my local CBS affiliate kept coming in and out and I would lose the signal. 
But the supposedly good news about the digital switch is that the bulk of the analog signal will be auctioned off mostly for cellular and wireless phone/internet use. Imagine not having to pay for DSL or cable internet service because you can now get high-speed wireless broadband internet on the old analog TV signal.

My analog reception sucks, too, but I can watch whatever channel I want and deal with the fuzz. With digital I am not allowed to watch something that is fuzzy. Either you're in the club or not. For a while I was optimistic that "no program" was being broadcast, but I saw it happen on channels that I had received before, so it's really just bad reception.  I wonder if the analog broadcasting infrastructure is such that some TV signal traffic will still happen... just not commercially. If so, it'd be fascinating to know what sorts of people or interests might still broadcast on the old system.
Perhaps a sort of subculture might develop, not unlike that around shortwave radio broadcasting. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

It could be because your local FOX affiliate hasn't quite switched to digital yet. Most of the broadcast stations switched over at noon today, but some may wait until the end of the day. They may broadcast in analog up until 11:59 pm EST, but Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals is tonight, and if the Red Wings win, they will probably stay on the air to broadcast all of the wild celebrations throughout Detroit. BTW, some of the broadcast stations will keep a low powered analog signal, or "nite lite" for the next three weeks. But don't expect to see any programming on it; all you will see is the station logo with a message that the station has switched to digital programming, and that one will need to have a digital TV, DTV converter box, cable or satellite TV in order to pick up their regular broadcast signal, plus the phone number and website for the government DTV program. Alright, I'm annoyed.
Some of the NYC stations ran "tests" a few months ago, broadcasting in digital and even though I have a really old TV, and no cable, I could still see them so it seemed like I was good to go. But to be on the safe side, I got the gov't coupon and paid an additional $20 (f*cking NYC prices) on top of the coupon to get a convertor box...just in case. I came home from work this evening, and turned on the TV; every thing was just like before.  I turned it off and have been doing some homework. I just turned on the TV...black screen.  So I drag out the convertor box and hook it up. Still nothing. I know the convertor box is on, the light is green, but nothing is coming up on my TV screen. How do I get the convertor to start its scan?
I live in an apartment building so I don't have access to the building antenna...and there is no way I can afford cable. I used to get a decent number of channels but now I get nothing!  I hate the government; I really don't understand why they needed to change this. I think it is just a big money making conspiracy. | |
