Gay guys, black girls and cool white dudes.... I take the train into and around LA and there is this young man I sometimes see on the train. He is homeless, most of the time he is dirty and disheveled and he walks on the train begging for money but he is almost always so dejected and you can tell he has a great deal of shame.
He might have some mental issues but it doesn't seem like he's on drugs or drinking his brains out, although I wouldn't blame him if he felt like going that route considering. I always help him out when I see him. I always feel like shit when I don't have enough money on me but occassionally if I have extra I will give him $20 or $30 to help lighten his load for that day. I always say hi and he is always happy to see me. Not because I give him money but because I actually have talked to him. I've invited him to sit with me and he's told me about his life and how he used to have a girlfriend but things didn't work out. How he used to work on bikes as a mechanic and how talented he was. Second to the last time I saw him he told me he was going to call his mom to see if he could come back home. I asked him if that was going to be a good thing and he said he wasn't sure because of his stepdad. The next time I saw him I asked how things were going at home and he said his stepdad was being an asshole so he left again. It sounds like his mom is a doormat and can't stand up for her child. I think he has some of this in himself. Anyway, I genuinely really care about what happens to this kid. I told him that maybe he could find a bike dealership and offer himself free of charge for a week to show his ability to fix bikes. Hopefully something will work out for him because you can tell he has such a big and loving heart. The last time I talked to him he told me thank you for always being so nice to him. He said that the people that help him the most and are the nicest to him are gay guys, black girls and sometimes cool white dudes. I thought it was interesting that gay guys and black women were most commonly the ones who expressed empathy towards him. The white dudes too but not as much as the gay guys and black girls, he said. Wow...
and I'm one of those people who feel bad about giving a little bit. I hate that. It puts me in a dilemma with myself because I'd rather give somebody more than they need than a little bit. I feel worse about giving a little bit than giving nothing at all. You have to be careful in LA though because some people are just trying to come up on a cutla dollas. And yes, stepdads are assholes. My mom tried to make me talk to mine the other day

This is part of what's sad about the world today, is that there are people like this guy who have a talent or skill but have, through choices that may or may not be of their own design, have been dealt a bad hand. Then I read about people like you, who do what they can to help, who to me are living examples of what it says in the Bible - "they will know we are Christians by our love." I am also hopeful that our President-Elect will be able to do as much as he can to address the needs of people like your friend, and not be stopped by a filibuster from someone who has no clue what it's like to be in such a predicament. God bless you!

The main thing I guess is that I found it very interesting that it was black women and gay men who actually took action on his behalf. Especially in light of all the crap being lobbed against each group over prop 8. Apparently we have one special thing in common It really just breaks my heart to see him with his eyes downcast and looking so sad. When we've talked he really comes alive and I can't deny such a geniune person human decency and fellowship. I did give him my email and number and told him to check in with me once in a while when he can. Hopefully I hear from him when I hit a freaking jackpot bonanza! .
