COON is the trademark of a cheddar cheese produced by the Dairy Farmers company in Australia. It was first launched in 1931 by Fred Walker.[1] Dairy Farmers states that the name has nothing to do with the more commonly known racist (originally American) use of the word. They assert that it is instead named after its American creator Edward Coon who patented a method, subsequently known as the Cooning process, for fast maturation of cheese via high temperature and humidity.[1] Former manufacturer Kraft, and later Dairy Farmers, have vigorously defended the trademark.

I guess I should have said it could be perceived as racist. Here and in England its a racist thing to call someone...a coon When I was young I could never understand why it was alright to call cheese that PRINCE IS WATCHING U " When an Artist Creates, whatever they create belongs to society"

The accuracy of Dairy Farmers' account of the origin of the brand has been challenged. Anti-racism campaigner Stephen Hagan has said that he has been unable to find evidence that Edward Coon was a famous cheese maker, contending that the name came instead from the black wraparound it was originally sold in.[2] i'll be interested to see how this pans out

A long time ago, they should have renounced their history and renamed the product. I don't see why they can't admit it instead of concocting a lie
If they apologised would it redeem them? or would their fears of never selling another cheese actually come true? I wonder. I still don't think I would buy it on the same token, I never bought a packet of "fags" even after they renamed them "fads"

Just change the name and not make a fuss over it, if indeed it's known within the company that the Edward Coon story isn't true. Anyone remember Darkie toothpaste? It changed to Darlie, but that only happened 10-15 years ago here, I think. We still have a brand of mops and cleaning products here called 'Black Man'.

This would seem the most appropriate thread for this pic. I saw this at the new bus terminal the other day and had to take a quick snap 'cause it made me giggle.

From a sales POV you would think votes and sales are same thing, obviously people aren't looking for integrity and humanity in their cheeses
