I'm terribly southern/hickish with my pronunciations...

can't = caint
Albany = Albenny
water = wuhter
theatre = thee-ATER

the list could go on and on...
I'm a walking example of stereotypical southern dialect...

i think it was well after i was out of college that i realized that "waller" and "wallow" were not two entirely different words, but that "wallow" was the correct pronounciation of "waller". it still feels weird to say "wallow". redface

it's always gonna be waller to me...I figure as long as my spelling and writing skills are ok, I can kinda have a pass for sounding like a total hillbilly..

I say:

"änt" instead of "ant" for aunt.

"mā-zhər" instead of "me-zhər" (measure)

"trā-zhər" instead of "tre-zhər" (treasure)

and like a good midwesterner, I pronounce "wh-" as "hw-". smile (See BlackAdder's post.)

and frequently mispronouce all sorts of words. I know tons of obscure words from reading/grad school, but have no clue how to pronouce them. sad (I was awful at phonetics/sounding out words too.) The guy I used to share an office with was an English major and would laugh at me all the time.

I used to say:

ir-ACE-able instead of ir-ass-ible (irasible)

clan-des-TINE instead of clan-DES-tin (clandestine)

until he corrected me. shrug

Edit: the boxes are supposed to be upside-down 'e's...I don't know why they won't post...

do people actually pronounce it "cat-sup"? that's weird. i've never heard anyone say it that way. i always hear "catch-up", or more accurately, "kejjup", kinda said real fast like "ribbit" or "hiccup".

It's not a word I say often, but I would say, "ketch-up" not "cAtch-up".

Ooh...often, I say that off-ten, not 'off-en'.

Algae:

I say al-jee, but my wife and her family say al-gee (with the soft "g")

I say (correctly!) "aitch" for the letter H, while most Aussies I come across say "Haitch". That pisses me all the way off! As much as I rant about it saying that "aitch" is the word in the English dictionary used for the letter H, and a word like "haitch" or "heytch" does not exist, it doesn't seem to matter. neutral Their argument is that "aitch" does not indicate the way the letter sounds, and that the way the letter is pronounced should start with an "h" sound. Well what about F? Feff?! N? Nenn? Worse- W? Wubbleyou?

I say zee-bra, but many others say zeb-ra.

I say app-re-she-ate, not app-re-see-ate.

I say ki-LAH-meter, not KILL-o-meter.

I guess it's a small victory that I recognize "how are you going" as "how are you doing", and a small defeat that I still spell the word as "recognize". lol And it's an even larger failure for me to understand the meaning of "schooner o' new thanks luv". sad

Some more:

I say sked-jule, not shed-jule.

I say day-byoo, not day-boo.

Tooz-day, not Tyooz-day.

I say on-o-mott-o-pee-a, not on-o-matt-o-pee-a.
