One of the ways in which diet sodas can make a person at is that, for some people, aspartame (and other artificial sweeteners, for that matter) causes an insulin spike. In other words, even though it technically has no calories, your body thinks it's just had a big hit of sugar and reacts accordingly. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Having a diet soda still sends the "sweet" signal to your brain which then prepares your body to consume a bunch of calories. When your body does not receive the calories, you'll find yourself consuming perhaps even MORE food later. Funny thing is my cousin (fitness guru) told me this and then one week later a study was published.... maybe I can find the link... a study done on rats where the ones that had diet soda actually gained more weight in a week than the rats having normal soda.

Soda, in general, is absolutely the worst thing you should drink when dieting or anything at all. It astounds me that people, as afore mentioned, want to have their cake and eat it too--and still lose weight. I basic training, my drill instructor told us that by regulation he couldn't force us to eat this or that item, or forbid us to. But he strongly recommended we avoid any soda whatsoever, diet or not, during basic training, if we wanted to physically condition ourselves for the challenges ahead. Aside from the fact that you're ingesting toxic stew that you have no clue what it's affects will be down the road, your ingesting huge doses of salt.

The nutrition facts on American sodas are much clearer on this. I'm pretty sure I was surprised at the amount of "sodium" in one of those drinks.

http://blog.wired.com/wir...-coul.html I guess, to me, PricelessHo, the answer to this... "forget about nutritionists"... is that diet soda can make you consume more food over time to make up for the sweet signal the diet soda sent to your brain.

Truth. I wouldn't say for "some" people.

Upon ingestion, aspartame breaks down into several residual chemicals, including aspartic acid, phenylalanine, methanol, and further breakdown products including formaldehyde,[14] formic acid, and a diketopiperazine. There is some controversy surrounding the rate of breakdown into these various products and the effects that they have on those that consume aspartame-sweetened foods (from wikipedia)
Also, just because the FDA approves a substance for use doesn't mean that it's 'safe'. Just look at the shit that we're drinking when it comes to dairy...

Truth. I wouldn't say for "some" people. I said "some" because, if I hadn't, someone would have said, "You can't make a blanket statement like that. How do you know it affects everyone the same way? i used to be able to put away 6-8 cans of coke a day without even thinking about it.... its the bubbles and the 'burn' on the way down that get me, LOVE IT! but then i switched to diet coke because i realize i could be putting away nearly 1000 calories a day just from pop! i lost about 30 lbs over the course of about 3 months or so after i switched, but dont worry, enventually i found them again im straight up addicted to diet coke now, i KNOW that its not good for me. i am going to try to switch over to carbonated water now im sure that is going to take some getting used to.... i cant STAND water, as i told bluesbaby, its like drinking air One of the best days of my life... http://prince.org/msg/100/291111

I like sparkling water too, and I drink that in the afternoon. But I need the caffeine from the diet Coke in the morning. I guess my obit will read: "Death from diet Coke ingestion."

WHAT ABOUT TAB?! Is there no TAB love, people? I love this article
http://www.newyorker.com/...lk_mcgrath Steve Isaacs, a self-described "Tab nut" and former Washington Post editor who teaches at the Columbia Journalism School, has been told by several doctors not to drink it. "I tell them to go to hell," he said recently.

CarrieMpls said: I'm of the completely non-scientific opinion that everything is OK in moderation. I drink diet soft drinks a few times a week. Why? Because I have to seriously, seriously watch my calorie intake. I gain weight just by looking at food. I drink lots and lots and lots of water. But sometimes I want something with a little flavor, so I grab a diet soda or make a pitcher of crystal light. I drink the caffeine-free ones, though, as I'm super caffeine sensitive.
And caffeine is actually an appetite-suppressant. Caffeine has been a main ingredient in diet pills for a looooong time. Aspartame may be what causes you to feel hungry. Kind of like gum. Your body is getting ready to process calories cause you're consuming something but since there's nothing there to turn into energy, you want more. moderation sounds good, but I just can see myself eating in moderation..... Ive tried Say it's just a dream...
U open up ur eyes and come 2 realize u simply imagined this So u lean over and give her a kiss Here on earth, here on earth, with u it's not so bad Here on earth, here on earth eye don't feel so sad Stay right here

I understand the temptation to guzzle diet drinks cause I know that I drink ALOT everyday and
1. I don't want to drink all my calories 2. Water can get a bit boring after a while So I started cutting all my drinks with water or unsweetened herbal tea For example... Everyday, I made a 64 oz. bottle of diet lemonade, then I make 32 oz. of mint herbal tea. I mix them together, pour it in bottles and let it chill out. Less artificial sweetner, but more flavor in every serving Served over ice, it's Heaven in a glass also I water down orange juice, and fruit punches so its half the normal amount of sugar too If you will, so will I
