Then here comes sextonseven providing all the right information. In everyone else's defense, maybe they didn't want to spoil the endings of the movies? Hmm...maybe that's true. I usually don't worry about knowing endings because I look at the structure as a whole, not the entertainment quality so much. Although, I just finished watching the second part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. So anyone who wants to spoil that ending I do appreciate the vague references in that case.

The only movies I can think of at the moment are:
Rescue Dawn -- the film seems to reverse everything it was saying by turning a philosophical treatise into a hero worship ending. I heard that Herzog was forced to change the ending into a happy one to make it more palatable to American audiences and less critical of war. Anxiety said: i know there's a movie ending that pisses me off far more, but the ending of that spielberg "AI" movie was lame. It should have ended with the robot kid stranded underwater staring at the blue fairy. all that crap about the far future and getting discovered by people who look like big walking spoons was really unnecessary and it felt tacked on.
My friend and I debated this. She agreed this was the worst ending while I said it had to be War of the Worlds (now a tie with No Country for Old Men for me). I didn't have a problem with AI not ending with the boy staring at the blue fairy. However, the ending was admittedly very Hollywood. On the other hand, there's no way Tom Cruise's son should have survived in War of The Worlds, let alone beat him to his mom's house with nary a bruise on him. Either way, Spielberg deserves a good lashing. [Edited 3/6/08 1:40am]

Just got back from seeing 'No Country For Old Men' for the second time, this time in the theatre on the big screen.....hoping I would make more of the ending than after the first time....
This time I was really pissed off, it made me feel stupid, angry! As much as I like the acting & the pace of the movie, I like almost everything that the Coen brothers have made so far, the ending of this movie should have been the reason for this movie to not have won the Oscar for best picture!

But what I love about Bertolucci films are the intersections between personal and political. The Conformist is the best example of this (repressed homosexual enlists as Nazi assassin in an attempt to conform). The characters are often not admirable at all. I think the suicide attempt could be seen as folding into the riot, since they are playing an active, destructive, irresponsible role in that final scene -- which says something about their useless lives. The suicide attempt represents the reality -- an underlying nihilism. [Edited 3/10/08 11:33am]

Depends on what the ultimate message of the movie was supposed to be. Having it end with the kid underwater and staring at the blue fairy, wishing to be real so he could be loved, would definitely have given a much different message than the one that was given. The ending it has now, as goofy as it was, emphasized the constant of love, how true love really never diminishes, and the role faith plays in finding it. It also showed the "fake" love of robot boy as ultimately being more real that the love we humans tend to hand out and expect back. well put...i love that movie!
