Imago said: You know, I've been avoiding the photowhore threads alot lately, only popping in and out to make an occasional contribution or to fuck around.
But I've noticed that these threads have a certain pattern to them. Is it just me or do we seek reaffirmations of our own looks when we posts these pictures of ourselves? I mean, I'll be completely honest and say I love hearing folks say or or to one of my pictures, but honestly, I only believe about 1/3rd of it if even that. Mostly, I feel these are just polite gestures from friends or nice people. Kind of like watching the last few people in a Marathon run through the finish line--they all get cheered on, even if they didn't do well. It's an affirmation that they at least tried . Alot of photo's are also doctored or done with "myspace angles" for obvioius reasons, so it's not like we're really trying to be "funny" is it? We're looking for these positive affirmations from other orgers, me thinks. Not that this is a bad thing--certainly helping someone's self-esteem is always good. And let's face it--alot of orgers do fall into generally accepted "norms" for beauty (clear skin, being of a certain weight, etc. etc.). But I just find these photowhore threads get a bit perverse when the obviously better looking folks achieve rock star status on these threads. Or when they become competitions or conduits for popularity. It's at that point that I get rather turned off by them cause there are folks out there feeling a bit alienated by this--and no, I'm not being 'sour grapes' about it, as I will often get these compliments. It's just that at what point does it go from being good natured fun, into something a bit more perverse? And lawd, when a jankity face gets posted up there and you folks either ignore their post cuase you just can't bring yourself to find the right positive spin on a bad situation, or you flat out lie to them and they continue to post--that's when it becomes downright dangerous. Anyways, what is your view? Do you feel these picture threads are good for self-esteem? Not just yours and your friends, but everyones? I think their good natured fun, but with unintended consequences from time to time. Personally, I want to be respected for my keen intellect. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

true, life is short. we never know when the I-35 bridge will collapse under us, sending us to a fiery death. true, life is for living and not for holding back. true - that expression 'nothing ventured, nothing gained' is accurate and apt. BUT when it comes to avatars i think the best approach is quite obvious, really: i'm talking unchanging! fixed! permanent! same old same old is best! don't be fickle! don't blow wherever the wind takes you! rather, stand your ground! hold fast! keep the same avatar forever. and ever and ever and ever and ever thank you. that is all Nothing to do with drama. a few laughs is always nice. Why commit to one avatar? There's always the name above the avatar to tell you who that person is. it's good you chose to take my post seriously

[/quote I only pointed out a few negative things about them (ugly people being lead to believe their hot, or hot people being rewarded for being hotter than others, etc. etc.). Moreover, the main intention of them was to get an understanding or perspective from other folks as to what drives the photowhore threads. XPLNYRSLF: Back to topic! Because it's important enough..... IS IT POSSIBLE TO TAKE A MINUTE AND THINK ABOUT THE ORIGINAL IDEA WITH THIS SUBJECT???? Yes, all of you. Pause a moment and give a serious response. I believe everyone can drop the physical interactions with each other, the avatar stuff etc. and think about the message. I personally am happy to see members post photos. This is reality folks. Equal opportunity posting. I mainly post photos where I look good. There's 10 other shots where I look like crap! We're not air-brushed, we have flaws, we aren't buff MF's! (xcpt dex) Physical characteristics aside, what drives the photowhore threads???? How about just a "this is ME?" flaws and all..... [Edited 9/7/07 14:54pm]

I should start a photowhore topic where only yukky pics are posted, as I have plenty!!!! It would be a "swallow your ego, humbling experience" opportunity.

I think we all have our beautiful qualities and I think it is good that we feel comfortable showing them off here.
There are times where I find my self esteem drop when I see the beautiful women that have bigger breasts than me. Which is an area I have always felt lacking in as a woman. When I feel that way I just log off and walk away for a bit. I felt comfortable posting a pic of me in the morning with my make up and hair not done and it also showed that I had small breasts. I guess I posted it to show that I am just human as we all are and we all have things about ourselves that we are not totally happy with. We are all beautiful in our own ways and we should be comfortable within our own skin to show who we really are beyond the words.

OK, for FUCK's sake. I love everyone here and I don't really care if people post a bunch of self serving photos or not. I post my pictures and sure I like to hear that people think I'm attractive. I'm aging and so of course I have insecurities just like everyone does. I just don't think it's that serious of a subject. I wish no one would get mad or think badly about others because they do or don't "photowhore" themselves.
I love you Dan and am not mad at this thread because we are all certainly entitled to our own opinions. I'm sure there are people here who like me and people who don't. Oh well. We can't please everyone. I just wish we could all love each other man!!!!! For the record... I LOVE EVERYONE (OK, except for a few people, but they probably know who they are)

About who was jankity and undeserving of love because they weren't beautiful enough or something. Then Anxiety chimed in when he saw the word 'jankity' being used, because he thinks that he's all "Mr Urban Dictionary dot com" and shit, trying to argue that jankity is actually a transitive noun derived from the verb 'to jank' or some shit like that. At any rate, I think we put that past us now or something. Anx can claim that he's from the big city, but I'm dirty south. jankity ass edit [Edited 9/7/07 18:08pm]
