FUKUOKA -- A bidet toilet seat at a hospital in the Fukuoka Prefecture town of Kurate caught fire and melted, apparently due to a heating problem, officials said.

The Washlet toilet seat, produced by Kitakyushu-based firm Toto, caught fire on Sept. 8, officials at Kurate Municipal Hospital said.

Police said that there was no evidence the toilet had been deliberately set alight, and that there was a high possibility the fire started from the heated seat.

This spring, Toto announced that a number of its bidet toilets had caught fire or overheated, but those products were different from the model that caught fire in the latest incident.

Toto identified the toilet at the hospital as its TCF6021 model. It was the first time an accident had been reported with the model. The company said a total of 700,000 units were shipped out between November 2001 and January 2006. They are commonly used at hospitals and hotels.

Police said a worker found the burned toilet seat at about 11 p.m. on Sept. 8. The fire had already gone out. The toilet seat and a bidet nozzle had melted, and the area was covered in water.

Toto plans to recover the toilet seat and analyze it to determine the cause of the fire.

"It will take about a month to identify the cause. We want to consider all possibilities and work to find out what happened as soon as possible," a company representative said. (Mainichi)
