confused Why would you walk a cat? It's not a dog. They make climbing posts and other cat toys for them to exercise with. I've only met one person who was successfully able to walk their cat on a leash and I've been working with animals for 11 years. I've worked with vets and other technicians who practiced for 20+ years who didn't see the point in cat harnesses. I've seen cat's get their collars caught on things and almost strangle themselves, which is why someone was smart enough to make cat collars that just break apart at the clasp when they get tugged on really hard. A harness is a lot harder to get out of and can potentially be more dangerous if the cat gets caught on something. I've had several cats who love the vet. I've seen so many tiny dogs with head injuries and broken bones, because they were stepped on by the owner during a walk or because they were dropped or sat on (not a big fan of tiny canine breeds) The only cats I've known to want to run away and thus have issues of being mauled, run over, or becoming lost are cats that aren't neutered/spayed or cats that aren't used to being handled anyway. Happy cats go outside on their own and come back. Cats are more independant than dogs, so I don't see the necessity of walking them on a leash, not even for exercise. Just my twocents

Why would you walk a dog? they make lots of dog runs and toy for them to excercise with.
I know plenty of people who walk their cats, with the cats actualy walking not just being dragged or forced to walk.
If you have only met 1, I suggest you widen your circle of acquainances.
Many vets and technicians dont see the point in alot of things especialy the older ones, that doesnt mean anything times have changed, it wasnt all that long ago when dogs were aloud to run the streets.
There are alot of places now that youre not aloud to just let your cat run on its own.
I understand about the collars and harness' getting caught on things being dangerous, but if you are only putting them on the cat to go outside on a leash and you are with them not just tying them up, the chance of them getting caught is slim.
The collars with the clasp is good but have you ever noticed that the harness' made now have those same clasps?
A unhappy cat can go outside and come back home just like a happy cat can go out on its own and never come back.
There are many reasons not to let your cat run, more so than even dogs.

And when has getting your cat spayed or neutered saved them from getting attacked by a wild animal, hit by car or stolen to ether keep themselves, sell, kill, or torture??
There have been many animals taken right off peoples front porches and out of back yards to be used ether for bait for or in dog fits, kids have even gone as far as sticking fire crackers up the animals butts and lighting them.
There are dumpsters here and there all over our city where animals that have disappeared are found ether dead or wounded.
Now wouldnt you agree that it would be safer for a cat to be on a harness and leash than to have something drastic like that happen to it?

Hello, my name is Shelly and I've successfully walked many cats on leashes for way more than 11 years.

And by the way, Meggy is the Cat Whisperer.

Vets don't always know what the're talking about. Meggy lost one of her orphans because the stupid vet refused to treat a urinary blockage and said it was a side effect of the antibiotic that he was on. Didn't find out why he couldn't pee until he died.
Another one said to have our dog put down because he ripped kleenexes when the vet had us wipe his nose and he nipped at it. Vet said he was aggresive and was dangerous.

These were two seperate Vets in two different offices in two different cities.

With the dog he had an infection in his nose that the stupid vet wasnt giving him the right meds for. I was the one that always wiped his nose cause I wouldnt let him get away with playing with the tissue, but the vet refuced to let me do it, it had to be Shelly.
They made us put him down.

After that we switched vets, The one that was treating my cat refused to accept that there was a problem, every time I mentioned that he couldnt urinate she completly passed it off saying that it was nothing more than a side effect to the meds he was on.
I had to have him put down a little while later because he was in so much pain, the vet that did the euthenasia was yet in a differance city, she said that we could try to save him but his systoms were already shutting down.

The vet we go to now is the only one I trust to touch my animals and the only one that I would accept any advice from

i am sorry about your animals, i agree with you, a lot of vets are incompetent.
i took my dog for a check up and the vet totally missed that he had a cut on his tail and was bleeding profusely. even after i pointed out that the waiting area was covered in blood.

he didnt even weigh the dog, until after i requested it. and was more intent on trying to give me free dog food samples and charge me for injections the animal didnt need.

both dentists and vets have a lot to answer for..

sad Meggy No vet can force you 2 put an animal down unless it is under the “dangerous animal act” even then you’re allowed 2 seek a second opinion from independent associations. Always seek second or even third opinions.I am so sorry 2 hear ur loss.
As for ur poor little kitty i'd have took the cat 2 another vet what the heck was that vet on shake

I would have fired those vets and seeked others then sue'd those idiots.

Thanks hug
We did take the dog to the SPCA, and since he had the infection they had to call the vet for prior information. The vet had told them that he was aggressive and bit people. So because of that he was confiscated and put down.
That was about 6 months before they changed the laws here.
I had another vet look at my cat too, (at the same office) right before I moved out of town and she said the same thing that it was just a side effect and that there was no way he wasnt urinating that there just wasnt enough to tell if he was or not.

Two stories for you:

1. I used to have a deaf cat named Mr. Bigglesworth. Because he was deaf, he couldn't hear cars or other animals, etc. when he was outdoors, but he loved to be outside. I would put a harness on him (the kind with a buckle), attach a leash, and walk him. Sometimes for miles. He died a few years ago (the vet said he died of natural causes.) He was only three years old and I miss him dearly.

2. I also had a cat named Bob (Bobbi). Bob adored the outdoors but would climb trees and then lacked the gumption to climb back down. After climbing after her for I don't know how many times, my husband I tired of this game and decided to put her on a leash. We put a harness on her (again, the kind with a buckle), attached three leashes together (so she'd have room to move around), and then attached one end to her harness and the other end to our backdoor. We had a bench outside that was always distanced from the house enough so that Bob couldn't reach it. During the summer months, I sometimes sat on it and read. If Bob was outside as well, I would move the bench closer to the house, and she would jump up and sit on my lap. This summer, during a day of said reading, it grew cold so I went inside. I forgot to move the bench back and my husband found Bob a few hours later strangled to death on the bench. Her leash had wrapped its way around the arm rest and when she tried to jump, she basically hung herself.

My point? If you are going to put your cat on a harness - PLEASE use the breakaway variety.

Thats the thing after awhile it slips your mind to make sure things are out of reach. Which is where the break aways are great but also why I said before that they should only be use while under supervision. Kinda like dogs and their collars or even with the animals toys and bones.

Ok, first of all some people don't seem to read what I said, they just wanted to go against everything EVERYBODY else on the thread said coughestellecough

I agree only idiots would take their cat to the vet on a leash, they get scared. I'm trying to walk my cat cos he OBVIOUSLY wants to go out.

I also mentioned earlier on the thread that I live on the third floor in a populated area with traffic... so no I'm not letting Mini out on his own.

I completely agree with Meggy on all counts clapping hug Nice to make your acquaintance this way nod I'm so sorry about your pets, it's horrible what some people can do with mere incompetence sad rose

Lastly, I also already mentioned the risk of a pet strangling themselves if you leave them on a leash unsupervised. shrug

So I'm going to get a harness and leash for Mini woot! nod and take him out one day when it's warmer and less rainy. lol
