Why do people shoot guns 4 New Years?

A 16 your old genius in Atlanta shot a gun off 4 New Years. His reward? Murder charges. The bullets came back 2 earth, struck his 52 year old Uncle and killed him.

HUMANS are unbelievably STUPID.

i believe here in Arizona you can as long as its blank rounds but live rounds will get you locked up, the same thing happened to a young girl from here, who was talking on her cordless phone, and the bullet struck the top of her head killing her instantly

The better question is, why do people have guns in the first place, especially a 16 year old?

Fucked up.

my husband shot his gun off at midnight. lol

I'd say the better question is why a 16 year old was unsupervised and with a gun? and who's what it? (I wonder if it was his uncles)

The full story from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Celebratory New Year's shot kills man, cops say

By SAEED AHMED, BETH WARREN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/02/07

When the clock struck midnight, the 20 or so revelers who had gathered at a Mableton house retreated to the back yard and rang in the new year in what, police say, has become an all-too-common practice: firing guns into the air.

But early Monday morning, one of the bullets fell from the sky and hit a 52-year-old guest in the back. His death is believed to be the first fatal shooting in metro Atlanta in 2007.

Two other guests at the Moselle Drive gathering were clipped by bullet fragments, but they were OK.

The panicked partygoers called authorities and told officers the victim had been wounded in a drive-by shooting, said Cobb County Cpl. Dana Pierce.

Police had their doubts.

For one thing, the shooting occurred in the backyard of the ranch-style house. For another, neighbors did not recall seeing a car speed away, Pierce said.

One neighbor said he heard fireworks at the house at the stroke of midnight, then three shotgun blasts at 12:02 a.m., followed by police sirens.

Still, the story of the drive-by shooting circulated throughout the day, worrying residents who had considered their community safe and quiet.

By Monday evening, police had determined that partygoers had fired "numerous weapons to celebrate the New Year." And they charged a teenager who lived at the home with firing the fatal shot that killed his uncle, Charles Duncan.

Duncan had come down from Austell for the party.

The teen, 17-year-old Bruce Martin Jr., was charged with involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence and obstructing a police investigation.

Authorities also charged two other residents — Brandon Bowie, 21, and Lakeisha Collins, 18 — and three guests: Ashley Teasley, 20, of Atlanta; Demario Quintez Grooms, 19, of East Point; and James Williams, 20, also of East Point.

Each was charged with evidence tampering and obstruction for concocting the story of the drive-by, police said.

Cobb police, like those in other jurisdictions, say that every New Year's Eve they get reports of shots fired into the air. But this was the first fatality that Pierce can remember that had resulted from the practice in Cobb County.

"From right around sunset until the hours after the new year [begins], I'd say we get literally hundreds of calls," he said.

At least 5 woundings since 2000

Since 2000, at least five people in the metro area have been wounded by celebratory gunfire during New Year's celebrations.

In 2005, a Delta Air Lines ticket agent from Hampton was hit by a bullet that passed through her left ear and lodged in her neck at the Peach Drop in Underground Atlanta.

That same year, a University of Georgia freshman from Douglasville was hit below her right knee by a bullet that pierced the roof of the Georgia Dome during the Peach Bowl.

In 2004, an 86-year-old Atlanta woman was hit in the arm as she left a New Year's Eve church service in Bankhead.

In 2001, another Peach Bowl attendee was grazed by a stray bullet that came through the roof of the Dome.

And in 2000, a college student from South Carolina who had traveled to Atlanta to watch the Peach Drop was hit in the back by a stray bullet shortly after midnight.

Veteran Atlanta homicide Detective A.B. Calhoun said the shooters do not realize that — unlike on television and in the movies — those bullets do not just disappear into thin air.

They return to earth with an intensity that can penetrate internal organs, at speeds of more than 200 feet per second, said William Gurstelle, author of "Backyard Ballistics."

"It might not travel as fast as when it leaves the muzzle of a gun, but what goes up is going to come down," he said.

News researcher Nisa Asokan contributed to this article.

My man is a firearm owner and an excellent marksman. He owns guns only for target shooting. Gun safety is first priority in his book, and it pains him to see rediculous incidents like this happen. Idiots with guns make it harder for intelligent, law abiding gun owners.

Yep, he's got a permit and and purchases his firearms through reputable dealers. He always makes sure to follow the rules.

He has also considered a career in law enforcement, so his target training might help him achieve that goal.

nod I used to be terrified of guns before he and I started dating. When I saw how responsible he was with his firearms, it made me less afraid. Everytime we go to the range I see people who take gun safety very seriously, and it put my mind more at ease. Not everyone sees guns as a way to intimidate others, and to get what they want through violence. Some people just enjoy the sport of shooting.

I also found out that I'm a good shot! biggrin

I do not know the law in AZ or most states but...in many states you only need a permit to carry a "concealed" weapon, if you want to carry it openly you usually don't need a permit at all.

I asked my husband when he came in if he just shot it in the air and he looked at me like I had 3 heads and said no... I was like well I wasn't sure what you did out there...he said, I shot at the target...which is like a huge bundle of logs.
