It ain't gonna be decided for a few more years. I have a few ideas that may help SF win the hearts and minds of the IOC:

  • Preview our new mascot: the drug-addicted, psychotic homeless man pushing a shopping cart.
  • Show them how much further a javelin will travel when hurled with the wind in Candlestick Park.
  • Propose a new cycling event: dodging potholes on city streets.
  • Hire our graffiti artists to create commemorative artwork.
  • Perform the awards ceremony at the base of the shameless "Coke bottle" sculpture at PacBell Park.

We've got it in the bag!

Okay, does anyone really care about the Olympics anymore?! I mean, come on, it's a commercial circus. I think it was over for me after Montreal, 1976. Does anyone else remember the McDonald's medal count promotion - I stuffed myself silly with the BigMac golds when it came to swimming, boxing, and track&field.sick

While I admit enjoying watching the so-called "Dream Team" kick ass in Barcelona, 1992, that's also when I realized the whole thing had become a completely ridiculous.

By far, the most egregious misuse of the "games" occurred in Los Angeles, 1984. That may be the only time in my life that I was embarrassed to be an American (listen, I'm bearing my soul on that, so try to avoid the obvious cheap shot!).

Anyway, it's all about the $$$ now (probably always has been). The WORST part of the whole affair is the lame TV network coverage that we get here in the US. They wear out that theme song, "DAAA, daaa, da-da-da-da, etc..." And the actual athletic events are a sidebar to the friggin' endless human interest stories for these athletes - each one seems to have a "story" to sell, I mean tell.

My facination is long gone. The only reason I'd like to see them arrive in SF is so the city leaders would finally clean-up the decay!

I really hope NYC is NOT chosen. They need to spend money on affordable housing and better schools, not waste space and money building big stadiums and sports venues that will only be used ONCE (check Atlanta's Olympic City). All this is going to do is displace poor folk even more from the City while gentrification continues.
