Forthcoming UK election

I have settled back in the UK after being away from the country for a long time and i am having a real problem deciding who to vote for in the upcoming general election. The choice of parties and candidates seem to be pathetically poor. I can't trust Labour anymore as they dont seem to be doing anything with the NHS, they go to war against the will of the people, jobs are disapearing overseas, immigration controls are a joke - and security - is there any??
The conservatives just seem to be trying to tell people what they want to hear so they can get back into power and then there is the liberal demo-whooooo party!
WHAT TO DO? WHAT TO DO?
Any advice will be gladly recieved.

it's a no-brainer.

- Labour not doing anything with the NHS?

Dude, you need to go and check how much money is being pumped in.

- Immigration controls are a joke?

immigration is important to the country's economy. Imposing "quotas" like the Tories want to do is arbitrary nonsense.

- Jobs disappearing overseas?

nod It's called outsourcing. In a free market, there's piss all you can do about it. India and China will be the next superpowers of the world, and that's that. Some other jobs have gone overseas because of Britain's failure to enter into the Euro - but that's another story (see Microsoft going to Ireland, for example).

- Labour going to war against the will of the people?

Well, this isn't strictly true, since there was no referendum. However, I sympathise with you and feel angry on this issue.

To be honest, I will probably be voting Lib Dem simply as a tactical vote, because I live in a Tory seat and the Lib Dem candidate is the only one with any hope.

But my heart's with Labour, even if they fucked up on the war.

The amount of money being "pumped in" doesnt fix the issues - its a quality problem and how the money is being used - just look at the MRSA issue that just wont go away - money doesnt seem to be solving that one does it?

- Immigration controls are a joke?

immigration is important to the country's economy. Imposing "quotas" like the Tories want to do is arbitrary nonsense.

But how about the illegals who are gathered outside Calais waiting to hop on the next lorry or train over - that has got to be a concern for everyone. It's almost the same problem the US has with the mexicans illegally entering the country at will

- Jobs disappearing overseas?

Doesnt help us jobless Brits out any though does it? - look at Gold319's husband he desperately wants to work but cant get anything - they are having to move across the other side of the world to get work in the USA

- Labour going to war against the will of the people?

Yes - you know what im saying!!!

Its a tough one - i am so undecided!!

That's true. It is about how the money's used as well, I totally agree. But i don't see how the Tories offering their "right to choose" vouchers is going to help in the slightest. And they think they can cut bureaucracy? The voucher system is an incredibly complex concept.

The NHS is a bloody good service. Sure, we hear about the nightmare stories - but then we would, wouldn't we? MRSA is an issue, but money can help there - by recruiting extra nurses & therefore freeing up extra beds; keeping wards clean etc. These things don't pay for themselves.

But how about the illegals who are gathered outside Calais waiting to hop on the next lorry or train over - that has got to be a concern for everyone. It's almost the same problem the US has with the mexicans illegally entering the country at will

Relatively, this is a miniscule problem. And controls are improving, in any event.

Doesnt help us jobless Brits out any though does it? - look at Gold319's husband he desperately wants to work but cant get anything - they are having to move across the other side of the world to get work in the USA

Unemployment is incredibly, incredibly low in the UK. In any country you will, however, have certain areas of trade which, at different times, suffer in terms of jobs. Maybe Gold319's husband falls within that category, i don't know.

Now vote Labour!! razz

You just have to ask yourself if you want to live in a society where laws are constantly made in order to try and cure societies ills, or whether you are allowed to roam free of government inteferance whilst they concentrate on tackling societies ills with social reform.

Do you want to vote for a party that likes overspending billions and pumping it into an inefficient Bureaucratic public system causing constant tax rises with little reward, or do you want a party that will reduce the tax burden, increase public spending at a more controlled rate and tackle reforms by focussing on the front lines?

Do you want to vote for a party that blatently lies and breaks it's promises? "There will be no increases in national insurance"... There was. "This party will never introduce top up fees for students"... It did.
"Saddam has WMD ready to launch within 45 minutes and is a direct threat to the British public"... Erm.... yeah.... ok...

Do you want to vote for a party that has a deep rooted desire to take away your civil liberties? You could be arrested without trial and held indefinately under house arrest at the whim of a politician! Third world dictatorship politics anyone? How about the introduction of ID cards whereby your every detail about your life will be held on a central government computer under the pretense that these cards are supposed to combat terrorism?

Perhaps you would like to vote for a party that whilst millions of people are rendered homeless in Sudan, 300,000 murdered which is a larger body count than the tsunami, or where a savage Zimbabwean dictator starves his country unless they vote for him, whilst all this is going on in the world your prefered party is wasting DAYS of parliamentary time debating bloody fox hunting.

Would you like to vote for a party whose leader stands shoulder to shoulder with George W Bush, calls him a great man and a friend, shares his vision of a 'free' world and may even follow him to war with yet another muslim country with oil?

Maybe you would like to vote for a party whose pro-european stance goes as far as handing over basic laws that affects the British individual's rights to Brussels? Change your currency to the flawed Euro? Sign up to a european constitution when Great Britain has a long standing history and pride in not having a written constitution at all.

Thats what you get with labour. Dont be fooled by the strong economy nonsense. The economy is doing ok, and would be doing ok under any leadership. The bank of england controls interest rates. Neither party has any economy busting reforms in their manifesto's. If anything the Tories will be BETTER for the economy as they will give back 4 billion quid in tax...

You may not like Michael Howard. But at least the Tories seem to have their conservative approach back and that smaller government that leaves choice and freedom to the individual is better government. This government employes over 5.5 million people, most of them in fabricated jobs to bring the unemployment figures down. Vast amounts of money is wasted. Reforms are not working.

Education is in trouble with the amount of illiterate kids we have leaving school. Our exam processes are being critisised. You can now leave uni with over 20 grand worth of debt.

Crime is on the up despite the governments new approach to measuring it. How many times do you actually see police on foot patrol in London? I hardly ever see it. Police pressence in this country is at an all time low per capita.

NHS still has HUGE waiting lists and the rate of infections caught whilst IN hopital is rising at an alarming and sometimes tragic rate.

Immigration is very poorly policed and too many illigal immigrants are getting through our borders. In Bristol recently 31 people arrived at the airport claiming asylum. Because the government had closed the detention centre where these people would have been kept whilst checking the validity of their claim, these 31 people were let through and told to report back in 48 hours. How many actually came back? TWO! 29 illigal immigrants in one single month came through one of our many many ports of entry and were allowed to just walk through the gate...

Tony blair is bad for this country. He is a nasty piece of work... A vote against labour could reduce their majority to less than 40 and thus make Blairs position as leader untenable. But your vote must go to the strongest opponent to the current sitting labour MP. So do your homework, find out who is standing in your constituency. If your current MP is labour then vote for the next strongest candidate... If your current MP is not labour then the chances are your council is not labour either, in which case your council tax is probably lower than it would have been under labour, so keep your current non-labour MP in his seat...

Dont vote labour, they are getting it wrong...

Some GREAT points Jon - and very well put!(I can see you have thought about this
subject long and deep) This is what i was alluding to but
didnt express them as well as you have. My fear is that voting Mr Blair
and his party back into power will be a signal for them to carry on doing
exactly what they have been since '97 How can this be good for the UK?
Not only am i worried that there is no clear alternative to the current government, i fear that people dont give this subject any thought at all and
blindly vote for the politicians who can make the most outrageous promises!!

confused

Thanks again for the input Jon!!!!

Go back to your own country... Shit pan? You have no idea what you are talking about. You are clueless. You are harping back to a bygone era like you even know anything about it. Dont take the piss...

God aweful millstone? WTF are you on about. I believe it is called the council tax now and I believe it is labour who are resisting the change to it, not the tories or lib dems...

I think you should stick to watching cartoons and stop getting your opinion from 10 second sound bites you heard on the news...

And go and live somewhere else if you are so hard done by by this shit pan of a country, its people like you that the words apathy and ignorance were designed for.

As I said before I think you are a very ill person, you are too wrapped up in your own self to realise that people might actually like living in the UK..I am one of those people. Please don't be so stupid to believe that just because you hate this "shitpan" everyone else does, in fact I hardly ever see anyone support you in your ridiculous rants about the UK. What botheres me is that if this were a real life situation you wouldn't say anything because you have told us countless times you can't communicate well face to face. The thing is I have never voted in my life for any political power, here or in the USA!!

I dont trust any manmade Governments!! I beleive in what the Bible says when it states and instructs us 2 "do not put your trust in nobles or the son of earthly man for it is not in him 2 rule, but rather put your trust in God, who is the rightful Ruler over all mankind"!!

I dont trust Bush, like I dont trust Blair, so its not a case of me being a Bush follower as a reason for me going back 2 the USA. But my husband is being discriminated against here in this country because of his age as hes 51 now!! Only this week he was turned down for a job in favour of an 18 YEAR OLD who was less experienced and really didnt have a clue about the job, than my husband in welding, purely because the employers can pay LESS for inexperience rather than pay more!! My husband is OVER qualified for this country!! So we have 2 go where theres no discrimination because of age, health, race, etc. and that means the USA!! nod nod

To think Emily Pankhurt threw herself under a horse for the likes of you, she would be turning in her grave and thinking why did I bother.

If he is discriminated against then why don't you go out to work, can't take much brain power to work in a shop or cafe but no you won't, just lazyness.

You will do your usual trick and just disapear for the rest of the thread as always the truth hurts.

Isnt the quote: let he who is without sin, cast the first stone - surely it doesnt matter whether you "think" you have sinned or not - we are all guilty of sin, its just the degree's of sin isnt it??

Please post the date, time, place of the fight, ill be there. Maybe we could do it at the next prince fan meet or before the next concert??

It seems she just wants everything handed to her on a plate.. For someone who doesnt even vote thats asking for a lot.

One day she will learn that to have a voice and for anyone to even care about her plight she needs to become a functioning member of society. Sitting on her arse, unemployed and refusing to vote makes her a non entity and pretty useless to the rest of us...

Yes, for someone who constantly moans about income tax, countil tax, unemployment and the NHS and doesn't vote, well it's just pathetic..what a waste. In America everything will be on a plate for her, including a Maccy D's at 6am..yum yum.
