BECK - played EROTIC CITY live last night in BRIXTON

I went to see Beck last night @Brixton Academy, London
An incredible 1h 45mins show

The band are so tight - especially the drummer & lead guitarist

I was hoping he'd do Bowie's DIAMOND DOGS or WIN - both of which he has played live b4 I've been told... anyone have these on cdr?? I can hook u up with a sweet trade

Anyway, he played a gr8 medley towards the end of the gig comprising of:-

Beyonce's - CRAZY IN LOVE
Justin's - ROCK YOUR BODY
Prince's - EROTIC CITY
Queen's - ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST
Neptunes - (the new track... any1 help me out here)?

This was one damn hot gig - there are few artists who bowl me over as a live act... Iggy Pop was one, and Beck has just joined those ranks! Heck, The White Stripes were pretty mediocre is comparrison, and I saw them live at the same venue a few months back...

Go check out this new kid on the block

its called frontin, i think beck sung it a lot better than pharell from the neptunes, but then pharell is a bit of a shitty singer so...

actually i saw them a few months back too and well, i thought the white stripes were brilliant actually. jack white is a really fantastic showman and guitarist. beck was great also, but he didnt seem quite as dynamic, but he was still very cool (although i still kinda hate his old songs where he raps - stick to singing mate). i liked the way his keyboards could be moved about while he played them and the accordian on nobodys fault but my own was excellent! i have to say though, devils haircut and his hardcore, almost white noise/thrash-like cover of black math by the white stripes was absolutely awesome!

I can't believe that Pharrell wanted to give Prince that song!
I'm sure If Prince did respond and did want to record it, he would've changed the words...just a bit!! lol

"Frontin'" sounds like a Dan Fogelberg rip off to me though! nod

i think it would have been better for michael jackson actually. im tired of pharrell and the bloody neptunes anyway. he cant sing for toffee and while they have produced some good songs, half of them all sound the same. having said that, i did love the nerd album, the stuff they did for justin, some of kelis' stuff and other songs here and there. i just wish half of it wasnt so regurgitave of their other songs, and werent so cheap (or something) sounding.

I rate Jack White highly, but didn't think Elephant was a very good lp at all. I also don't see him as having the lasting longevity of sum1 like Beck... Beck has that x-factor on stage, and although Jack is certainly 'up there', he just doesn't cut it in my eyes - damn talented kid though

p.s. agree with u 100% - Beck shud cut the rap, like Prince should too.

Beck has it... I just loved the way he commanded the band, reminded me of Prince way back... the mobile keyboard was a neat touch too... hay he even did the splits - can't recall the last time Prince did one of those - that would be deemed to rude nowadays right?

As for comparing him as a live act with Prince of Iggy - I can safetly say that no1 I have seen comes close to the Igster

I caught him at the Brixton Academy also(last yar I think), and although it was a sub-par performace by is standards, he still blew the rocks of the house. I had a hge Radiohead fan with me who's also into some heavy-ass shit - and he still to this day talks about that gig

Put it this way - combine the raw energy of The White Stripes with the sheer inventon of Beck, and your still nowhere close to Iggy's domain

It's funny you say that. I recently saw a special on N.E.R.D.S here in Holland. And they are the first to say that they use "cheap" methods for their music. Mostly enhanced keys with samples...tryin to get the best sound outta it.

i dont doubt iggy has that energy, i meant beck! i think its to do with his music more really, it doesnt have that same urgency. not saying thats better or worse, just an observation.

I've seen Beck last Monday here in Hamburg. Very good indeed! Didn't play Erotic City though. Rock you Body was very cool.
I tell you I really had a hard time listening to them doing songs from Sea Change, because I cannot stop thinking of someone. That was really... moving.

I know where you're coming from, but Beck has pretty much had one great lp after another (though I'm not a huge fane of the last one). I've also read and heard nothing but rave reviews from all his tours over the years, and last night I got to judge it for myself.

Just 4 the record, Midnite Vultures is 1 of my all time fav lps - and it has 'urgency' and then some... the best Prince lp that P never released in the entire 90s?!

each to their own of course, but i think you might be alone there mate. in my not so humble opinion, elephant was one of the most exciting albums ive heard in god knows how long, and easily one of the most exciting in rock. everyone from the strokes, iggy pop, elton john to beck and even jimmy page from led zeppelin have praised the white stripes and to be fair, i wouldnt really call them a flash in the pan group - i think elephant is actualy their fourth album. even jeff beck asked them personally to do a gig with him last year, which must count for something!

incidentally, i read this article in the NME earlier this year and apparently beck (not jeff) was one of their earliest supporters. they had a cool photo of him and jack white at some gig from 98 or thereabouts.

i dunno, i got most of becks albums and while theyre not ALL great, trust me. odelay is thought of as his breakthrough classic and when its good it is fucking great, but as for the rest, it depends if you can bother listening to all the crappy raps or not. thats why i dont even like 'loser'.

>Just 4 the record, Midnite Vultures is 1 of my all time fav lps - and it has 'urgency' and then some... the best Prince lp that P never released in the entire 90s?![/quote]<

yeah id love to hear beck produce prince. his production is bang up to date and intersting/innovative and all the rest of it so if we had prince writing some good songs, beck producing, it could be unstoppable.

i dont think midnite... was quite as funky as prince though. the piles and piles of production on it make it a bit hard to find the groove sometimes.

but... who cares that prince hasnt released anything 'brilliant' for so long - it doesnt make the his older stuff any less great. loads of legendary artists have become shit but are still respected. like when exactly was the last good stones album released?!

Beck is a wonderful performer. He's one of my favorite singers.

Top albums are Midnight Vulters and Sea Change
