Holy shit, I've been converted! "Graffiti Bridge"-bashing is a favorite pastime here on the org, and I've always been an enthusiastic player. I mean, what the fuck was he thinking burying a couple of perfectly shiny gems in this steaming pile of dogshit, right?
Okay, I'm going out on a limb here, deep breath...WRONG! A couple of days ago, I decided to give the disc a spin from start to finish for the first time in, oh, ever. I was shocked - I liked it! How could something so wrong feel so right? So I'm putting on my flameproof catsuit and breakin' it down for ya. If you're feeling adventurous, then lay down your funky weapon, blow the dust off this one and listen for what I'm telling you here: Can't Stop This Feeling I Got Dammit, this is FUN! It makes me want to dance like Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air! Tell me you don't feel it near the end when he starts the falsetto, "hoooo, oooooh, hooooo, oooooh" shit - right around the time when the "Purple Rain" guitar comes in. I damn near got tears in my eyes, for fuck's sake. New Power Generation Okay, this is one song that I always made fun of as cheesy and silly - and not in that good way. "I hope they bury your old ideas the same time they bury you!" Embarrassing, right? Not so fast! Wait, and listen to this part: "No father, no mother, no sister, no brother, nobody can make me stop/said if u didn't come 2 party child, I think u better get up offa my block!" Nobody can build up musical tension and release the gasm like Prince can! Release It Morris at his bitchy best. What more needs to be said? The Question of U This one needs no defending. Bluesy euphoria. Elephants and Flowers Musical salvation! Generally regarded as one of the gems, so I won't get all out of breath defending this one either. Round and Round Okay, forget it. I skipped this one. I'm not fucking twelve anymore. We Can Funk This has always been one of my favorites. You got electric ass baby! You got electric thighs baby! I can't wait no longer child! It's getting stronger, baby, open up your eyes! Scream that shit! Joy In Repetition Speaks for itself. Shake "Lucy's standing there with the false hair on/Don't shake it 2 hard or that hair will be gone (oops)" Tee hee. Love Machine Yeah, I skipped this shit too. Tick Tick Bang Eh. It's kinda fun. One of the weaker spots, I suppose. Thieves In The Temple Funky anguish, pure emotion. The extended version absolutely kicks the Mistress's ass, but this will certainly do. That groove at "'Cause me and you could have been a work of art" just kicks! The Latest Fashion The daughter of "Strange Relationship." Who hasn't felt like this? "Yeah, so I lied. Fuck it, it's in this year. I'll take all the blame, yo baby, I'm sorry." Melody Cool Mavis Staples kicks ass. So does this song. "When I was born there were tidal waves. Whole town went under, nobody saved. At every funeral it rained every time I sang." Chills, dammit. Still Would Stand All Time A bit cheesy, but still pretty fucking wonderful. "Ooh, heaven, heaven on earth, we all want to find..." Again, he's the master at building to a crescendo. Graffiti Bridge Yeah, the title track's still shit. So I went to all this trouble with the zeal of a new convert. Have the decency to cuss me out, or come out of the closet yourself as a...horror of horrors...Graffiti Bridge lover!! You said it. For "some" reason people really look down on this album, but when you start considering the songs one by one, what's there NOT to love about it?!?!

When "Round and Round" was first released, I was twelve, and it was the jam of the year, so to speak. It was played everywhere and turned me into a major Tevin Campbell freak. So now I can't stomach it. It's like New Kids On The Block to me now. The Normal Whores Club | |
