The Rebels Project: my analysis/take on it...

if ya'll don't know about the rebels project, ask someone.

(o-tay: it wuz sorta like p's first stab at anonymity, but that's about all i'll say lol)

anyhoo--before i even heard the stuff, it seemed like a good majority of the folks here on the .org were like, "the rebels material sucked booty majorica!" now that i've learned a bit more about the whole thing and have heard the songs, i gotta say that it don't suck...that much. in fact, i dig a couple of the songs:

"you"--is it just me, or does this song sound veryveryclose 2 "we got the beat" by the go-go's? it's sorta got the same beat...there's sumfin 'bout this song i dig...just can't figure out what. hmm

"disco away"--this song's total disco rock-cheese, and i love it. that, and dez sounds pretty much like paul stanley. eek speakin of dez, his instrumental is pretty damn smooth. nod

the rest of the stuff's pretty mediocre...the stand-out sucky track is "if i love you tonight". gayle chapman couldn't sing 2 save her life!!! ill

testify, if u wish...peace

i thought it strange that he gave the song "U" to paula abdul many years later. never thought ANY of these tracks would see the light of day (outside of "if i love u 2night" which is a good track IMO). smile

I was pleasantly surprised when I first heard The Rebels album (probably cuz I was expecting it to be crap). You can certainly see it as a sort of half way house between Prince and Dirty Mind. Thrill You Or Kill You (even though it's by Andre) really has the sound of the Prince album, and I was expecting You to be a lot further removed from the Paula Abdul version. If I Love You Tonight doesn't quite have the melody line in the chorus sorted yet, and for some reason Disco Away's chorus reminds me of Kiss (the band, not the song).

for those of you not familiar with The Rebels
here's the tracklist;

Intro (Instrumental)
You
Hard To Get
Disco Away
If I Love You Tonight
Thrill You Or Kill You
Too Long
Turn Me On
Outro (Instrumental)

For some reason I am reminded of The Spiders From Mars whenever I listen to 'Hard To Get'. It has that glam-rock vive all over it.

O.K., I'm asking you, what is it? When did it come out and is that the name "the rebels project"?

'The Rebels' were a side project for Prince and his then newly formed touring band, consisting of the following musicians;

Prince
Andre Cymone
Dez Dickerson
Gayle Chapman
Dr. Fink
Bobby Z.

It was recorded inbetween 'Prince' and 'Dirty Mind'.
Prince only sings backing vocals on most of the songs, Andre, Dez & Gayle take turns in singing lead. Not all the songs were written by Prince, and the whole thing was very much a band effort. Prince wrote 'You', 'Hard To Get', 'If I Love You Tonight' & 'Turn Me On'. Dez wrote 'Disco Away', 'Too Long' & one of the instrumentals. Andre wrote 'Thrill You Or Kill You' & the other instrumental.

Only two of the songs have ever been officially released (in a re-recorded form). 'If I Love You Tonight' was recorded by Mica Paris in '91, and released on her album 'Contribution' (as 'If I Love U 2 Nite'). It was also re-recorded and by Mayte in '93, and released on her album 'Child Of The Sun' (as 'If Love U 2night).
You was recorded by Paula Abdul in '91, and was released on her album 'Spellbound' (as 'U').

The original idea was to disguise the fact that it was Prince's band. The album cover was going to be a picture of the band in silhouette, so you couldn't see their faces, and they were going to be credited under pseudonyms.

Sorry, but I think hard 2 get (really called loving you) is the best track. I love the 70's style banging on the keys rock piano. I think Gayle sounds good in a white female rocker way. Sort of like Melissa Etheridge. She's great singing turning me.

If you wanna see Gayle download Prince's American Bandstand performance from the file sharing program kazaa. She's pretty fine. Much better looking then both lisa and Wendy when they were young. http://www.kazaa.com

'Hard To Get' IS really called 'Hard To Get'.
For some reason, a lot of the bootlegs of the Rebels
album list the song as 'Loving You', but this is incorrect.
The song is copyrighted with ASCAP as 'Hard To Get'.
They also often incorrectly list 'Thrill You Or Kill You' as 'Thill Or Kill You'.

I don't listen to this that often, but I kinda' dig it.Maybe,it's nostalgia or the fact that I like hearing Prince's progressions ,but ,yeah,I wouldn't want to NOT have it.

I'm not gay or anything (not that'd be a problem if I was) but I just don't see that.
As far as her singing goes, she's okay.
